Police warn men over online 'sextortion'

West Midlands police say eight men have come forward saying they were lured into video chats and then blackmailed

Police have warned men to be wary of online "sextortionists" who blackmail victims by threatening to post explicit footage of them on the internet.

Eight victims have contacted West Midlands police in recent months after being instructed to pay thousands of pounds into offshore bank accounts. Officers say the blackmailers lured men into online video sex chats and then sent screengrabs to them along with demands for cash.

One man faced a demand for $5,000 (£3,000) from offenders who threatened to email images to his girlfriend and his daughter.

The offenders usually target their victims on social media sites such as Facebook and through conversations on Skype or FaceTime.

DC Stefan Ashton, of West Midlands police, said: "Since January we've seen a rise in the number of these offences in the West Midlands, with victims in Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Dudley, Walsall and Coventry. In most of the cases the videos have not actually been distributed but it's nevertheless been an absolutely horrendous ordeal for the people involved, who are understandably very worried about the consequences of such images and videos being posted online.

"The damage in the cases where the footage was shared with the victims' Facebook friends cannot be underestimated – they are clearly devastated. The blackmailers are calculated and malicious and have complete disregard for the people they're exploiting."

He added: "Cases of this type are notoriously complex, and because IP addresses are usually traced back to foreign countries they often, despite our best efforts, go unsolved.

"We are working closely with partners such as the National Crime Agency to crack down on offenders but the only real way to prevent this from happening is by not taking part in such activity at all. The moment you reveal yourself in an online video, you become vulnerable to exploitation and sadly it's the blackmailers who instantly become in control of the situation."

I never feel any sort of sympathy for these men, they sound like idiots. Happens alot in my country too.

windchymes -> RE: Police warn men over online 'sextortion' (5/16/2014 5:54:09 AM)

With all the warnings posted and spoken everywhere about not putting yourself out there on the internet, if anyone gets "caught", it's their own fault, IMO. Some people just need to learn things the hard way.

While I agree they are idiots, I wonder whether that would be your advice to drunk/partially-dressed college girls who get raped at a party.

Criminals take advantage of "stupid" people and you feel it is the victim's fault. Does not the extortionist have any culpability in this instance or are the extornists just ordinary folk trying to make a living?[8|]

Two different issues. These men are specifically looking for women to get their dick oozing, they are looking for wank fodder. Treating women like sex objects instead of human beings. And this may sound very strange coming from me since I do like being objectified, but only if a person cares for me more than just an object and the objectifying is just a small part of what makes our relationship. It's like being disgusted with real rapists but I enjoy consensual non consensual acts.

Scantily clad college girls getting drunk and having fun at a party is not by default specifically looking for sexual physical interaction.

I think the extortionist should be punished by the law for extorting, because what they do isn't correct either, but I just do not sympathize with the victim since their intent wasn't noble either, just that what they do is not against the law, so they can't be prosecuted, as distasteful as it is, what they are doing.

this would be opinion unsubstantiated by objecdtive reality

That is the nature of porn. Porn is a form of kink. Denigrating anothers kink is pretty low rent on a kink forum don't you think?

See, you're stretching things, too. The FACT is, extortionists are out there. Whether they're culpable is inconsequential, the question posted was about the "victims" who are WARNED ABOUT THEM. They're there, they aren't going to go away, and no one's going to be able to enforce any culpability.

So.....are we responsible for our own behavior, or do we just keep jumping up and down and squealing "It's not my fault!!!!! Or, the victims could chuckle and say, "Oh well, they're just trying to make a living off me, poor things."

Really???

Is there a hierarchy of kink in which some kink is more noble than others?

just that what they do is not against the law, so they can't be prosecuted, as distasteful as it is, what they are doing.

Do you think there should be laws against porn?

During a state training on sexual assault counseling, the post below is exactly like the ones presented as "red flags" to a rapist mentality. It takes years, if ever, for that mindset to become healthy or whole.

It is not stretching anything to call a criminal a criminal and to seek their prosecution.

I remain unconvinced that criminals are genetically more intelligent than non criminals...cyber criminals are caught by cyber cops.

So.....are we responsible for our own behavior,

False analogy...

or do we just keep jumping up and down and squealing "It's not my fault!!!!!

One takes a chance of getting mugged whenever one goes out in public. But it is hardly your fault if you do get mugged now is it?

It's all back to men believing that just because girls wants to wear as little clothes as possible and dance and drink and have fun, means they are looking for sex. It's hot in the clubs when you start dancing and sweating! Of course you don't want to wear alot of clothes.

Everyone is scantily clad in my country, tank tops and micro shorts, super short mini skirts, even if they are not going to a party, because it's 100% humidity 24/7 and the sun is burning hot here, and even at night, it's like a sauna, and if I had a choice, I just stay naked, because you sweat so much. And well, fortunately I have a choice to remain naked in my own home, because that's how I stay cool.

Absolutely, I would put pedophilia right at the bottom of that nobility.

What has porn got to do with live interaction with another human being in a distasteful manner?
