Actually, I would propose a new NFL expansion franchise for the city of Washington DC, and the nickname could be "Congress." Members of the team would be chosen from the Senate and the House of Representatives, and they would have to play an actual NFL team every week.

No way! Our record's bad enough now.

When has it been okay to try to get around the word filter to say something most regular members know, isn't allowed? I do believe that I will start shutting things down for those who don't seem to understand that less moderation doesn't mean a free-for-all or that adults won't be expected to understand without two or three warnings.

If it continues, I will be in touch and it won't be to coddle members with warnings and consider your motivation speeches.

I'm all for adults being free to express themselves and was very much for less moderation, hoping that choices would provide a way for members to enjoy the forums in a way that suited them personally, but it seems some will test the system. We can always go back to heavy handed moderation with bans. That could be your individual choice. You do have one a this point.

I may not agree with the vast majority of what Cloudboy has to say, but this is just plain silly. Saying that racist words are banned, in a discussion about racist words seems kind of ridiculous. Using apostrophes in place of letters when writing out derogatory words is fairly common practice, it's not "getting around the filters". Is writing "The N word" getting around the filters? Everyone knows exactly what I mean if I were to say that, but omitting letters is ok, replacing them is somehow wrong and deserving of a reprimand?

There's a big difference between using a derogatory term and directing it at someone/some group, and using it as part of a discussion on racism.

One last thing, why is it that it's only racist words aimed at certain ethnic groups that are banned? The word redskin has been said repeatedly, Cloudboy has argued how horribly racist and insensitive it is, but it was only when he used a derogatory term for African Americans that a Moderator has stepped in? In another thread, lots of terms for Asians were bandied about, so what gives?

Moderator3 -> RE: Will Daniel Snyder and the NFL ever wake up? (5/26/2014 3:12:48 PM)

Do feel free to email me and I can explain it to you just as I did another poster. Hijacking a thread to comment on a moderator's post isn't a place where I'd like things to go. There are words that are banned site wide and for consistency, we need to continue with that practice.

There are many things that I must do and work with and there isn't enough time to get it all sorted out quick enough to balance things out. I will be working on the word filter and each thread like this one reminds me that it needs to be done, however there are a lot of things that need to be done, including training moderators so that we can have consistency, fairness and objectivity that will better serve within the forum areas of the site. To do the word filter, I must have it ready for approval and meet for that approval. It takes time and we have been rather busy of late.

I cannot always stay on one thread and have multiple things to do so it may seem things are not being done or done correctly, but it is going to take time and a little understanding would go a long way. It is a holiday and I am short staffed at the moment, but even then, I am the only one that can address some of this.

Anything further, I would appreciate it if people emailed me and not hijack the thread.

Thank you

You are spot on, as usual, and the consensus is to just forget about the past and use the name de-novo in a general environment where the current population takes no offense.

Time sanitizes the meaning into something else.

Good thinking.

After all, how would we react if the team was named the Washington Negroes? Or the Washington Jews? And, what's worse, the name of Washington's team -- unlike the Cleveland Indians, the Atlanta Braves, the Chicago Blackhawks (named for an actual chief) or the Kansas City Chiefs -- is more than a mere racial reference. It is an actual racial epithet.

--------

The term Redskin, came from two places, the skin color, then the cruel torture of skinning Native Americans for a bounty. Since their skin was red they started saying "red skins."

Wouldn't make any difference.

I've been a Redskin fan since before they got Sonny and the way they are playing they should be called...The Foreskins.

Having not fired Haslett, their def. coach...nothing will change this year. In fact most observers will tell you that as long as Snyder owns the team they will never...win a super bowl and I tend to agree. He is a real asshole.

Comparing the name of the Washington team to Negroes and Jews suggests to me that one of your two brain cells isn't firing.

Also, the 1913 edition of Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary defines the term simply as "a common appellation for a North American Indian." No derogatory connotation was noted at that time. MacMillan calls it "an old word meaning 'Native American.'" And Dictionary.com records only that it is "often disparaging and offensive." So it's status as an epithet is largely a not yet fully accepted modern invention, and your race trolling completely ignores the context.

The Indians were brave and fierce warriors, and the Washington team is plainly employing the term as an honorific, not a slur.

Stereotype much?

Would it or would it not be acceptable to use a term once in common use for an ethnic group but now considered a slur as a sports teams nickname?

It's only considered a "slur" by race trolls and grievance mongers (like you) inventing shit to whine about.

In 1999 the United States Trademark Trial and Appeal Board ordered the cancellation of the trademarks of the Washington Redskins football team after finding that the use of the word redskin was "scandalous" and "may ... disparage" Native Americans or "bring them into contempt, or disrepute." Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia reversed this decision on 30 September 2003, granting summary judgment for Pro-Football, Inc., against Cheyenne-Creek Indian activist Suzan Shown Harjo and others. The court found that "the TTAB’s finding of disparagement is not supported by substantial evidence..." the actual origin of the word is entirely benign and reflects more positive aspects of relations between Indians and whites. ~Source

The term is clearly a slur in the view of many members of that group and people with any sensitivity. Now answer the question

Well, Ken, there are slurs and insults for all kinds of groups of people, whether they're identified by race, religion, sexual preference, or some other quality. Even right here in P&R, for example, I'd be willing to bet that there are many people who would consider being called a "DomKen" an insult and a slur equivalent to being called a pathological liar. It seems to me that if you had any sensitivity you'd change your nick. Can we count on you to get right on that? There's a good fellow!

Such hypocrisy, Ken. I'm surprised at you.
