Okay, that may have been a bit obscure. Here's another. Mum's the word.

Over the holiday weekend (when it falls on or near a weekend) I especially enjoy road trips, camping, fishing, hiking, grilling and eating great food, watching fireworks over a large body of water... Might take in an auto race.

Some people drink, I don't

What do people usually do over there? Parades, parties, bit of hearty boozing in the evening? Does it involve turkeys?

Oh, the boozing can start a lot earlier than in the evening.

All of the above, and then quite a bit more. Fireworks are probably the most widespread tradition, either in the big organized show, or just locals letting them off with little regard for what is legal in that area and what isn't. I've been hearing the odd firecracker since dawn. If I park up on a hill tonight, there will be illegal airburst fireworks going on all across the valley, long before the big civic shows at the fairgrounds and baseball stadium.

For a bigger legal boom we sometimes take our rifles, pistols and shotguns out into our pasture and shoot them off into the ground as rapidly as possible

Pretty loud, and kinda awesome for the kids

Of course without the war ending as it did I would not exist as one of my ancestors was in a union Maryland regiment that spent the end of the war in Chattanooga where he met a local girl who he married and moved to the family farm with after he mustered out.

It's much too crowded to go to Antietam Battlefield nearby for the fireworks display there. We traditionally watch it at the Fairgrounds, which is where we'll be later this evening.

Peon, we could tell you about what goes into our celebratory clandestine activities today, but then we'd have to kill you.

Kirata, lovely pics.

Which reminds me, speaking of the Civil War, one or more of my ancestors was in the Maine regiment which fought heroically at Gettysburg. Not aware of any who fought for the Confederacy, so no brother pitted against brother.

The 4th started last night, with Mother Nature dropping numerous lightning strikes. The Heavens light up every few seconds for a full two hours!

And just to show how hardcore we are in Massachusetts, we'll celebrate the 4th even with a hurricane bearing down on us!

A very 4th of July Flash Mob....

Now if you really want some firearms fireworks, Sanity, get some dragon's breath rounds for the shotguns, and try trapshooting glow-in-the-dark clays.

I'm so glad I live in a relatively lame area. I don't need fireworks going off all the time. My last two places of residence had "neighbors" (somewhere in the neighborhood) that would fire them off a couple days before through a couple days after for the 4th of July and for New Year's Eve.

Personally, I'd much rather sleep at night. lol

To be fair, they stop around 10 or 11 so it isn't like they keep people up at night.

Not where I used to live. There'd be fireworks popping off past midnight. The dog didn't like it one bit, either.

You're lucky. Assuming it doesn't rain and no one gets hurt too close by they'll likely go till 2 or 3 AM.

Fortunately for us over here, the 4th isn't really celebrated much unless you live near a US base.
But there are some dumbass fuckwits that don't consider people's pets whenever its a celebration.

My chipmunks go into hiding and squeal like mad and even the fish hide.

Personally, I'd like to ban personal fireworks and leave it to the organised displays.

Butt out of how we play. That's the essence of what we are celebrating.

That may be the essence of what assholes and fools celebrate but american patriots celebrate a much more solemn event. Your vile filth is yours and yours alone you speak for no one but yourself.

Anything that explodes or flies up into the air is already banned here. That doesn't even slow it down, but then, we Americans are an independent bunch, without much use for interfering government authority.

This is, after all, the celebration of telling the Brits to take their rules, and go fuck themselves with them.
