nightberrie -> "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/23/2014 7:11:24 PM)

As friends and co-workers gear up for the impending release of this new flick, I can't help but wonder if others have felt this way: I'm sure it's going to inspire a lot of water cooler discussion and it's going to be hard to resist offering up an opinion from a perspective of experience without outing myself. I find it a bit awkward.

Any one else feeling this way? I didn't read the book; I haven't wanted to. The popularity of it has almost lessened my interest in BDSM. It's as if the whole thing has been sullied by its appeal to the masses.

I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseum and this is my first post. I probably should have searched for a similar thread so forgive me.

And you don't link to the VERY RECENTLY RELEASED TRAILER? c'mon!

Honestly- with the popularity of "50 Shades" I think its really bringing out the fact that everyone has a freak flag, let it fly.
I know a lot of other folks think its "diluting our BDSM culture" but I'm not an elitist, the more the merrier.

As far as work goes...I mostly just ignore things that don't belong at work- like my sex life. :)

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/24/2014 6:39:25 AM)

Wow, that looks cheesy.

Honestly I'd just keep my mouth shut if it was someone I didn't want to discuss kink with. If anyone asks me about it I'll tell them my honest opinion - it's just another tacky romance which isn't really my taste. The kinky sex alone isn't enough to make it interesting for me.

I'm not massively concerned about people suspecting I'm kinky. It isn't particularly taboo anymore - even pre 50 shades stuff like blindfolds and handcuffs were mainstream.

I've never really understood going off something because it's become more popular. I like things because I like them, not because I enjoy being edgy or different, so it doesn't take anything away from me if everyone else likes it too.

Jewelcrafter -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/24/2014 6:51:22 AM)

I do remember it being discussed on the forums when it was first released they were going to make it, but didn't follow them. I never read the books, though I know a few people who did. I have no idea what's in the book but do wonder if a true adaption would be NC-17 or not, and if so will it get that rating or be dimbed down to R to reach a wider audience, which will probably be bad for the film.

It hasn't changed my view on BDSM and as far as water cooler talk, eh. I can fall back on I know about this stuff because I was researching it for a book I was working on. :)
As far as my view on the lifestyle in general that came up around the water cooler, I would keep that to myself because that would show I have more than just basic research knowledge.

Edited to add -
I watched the trailer and honestly it didn't catch my attention at all.

SweetAnise -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/24/2014 7:10:07 AM)

To the OP: I just saw the trailer maybe I am just uncaring...but it reminds me a lot the Secretary. I don't care about the book or the movie. And I don't see what the big deal is about. Nothing new just about money. Gosh I never sounded this negative in a post ever. So I will put on SMILE on my face and ask myself, "Why so serious?" [:)]

DesFIP -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/24/2014 7:41:00 AM)

I'd just say that I haven't seen the movie or read the book and then ask them that since they've done one or both, what did they think about it? Does it stay true to the book? Stuff like that.

FriendlyMuppet -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/24/2014 8:44:28 AM)

Personally, I think a lot of bdsm people are kind of hoping this movie sparks more in the general population than I suspect it will. What I think the movie appeals to is not bdsm kink, but the fantasy a lot of women have of billionaires that take control and "take them away from it all". It just uses bdsm as its spin away from the usual narrative traps that billionaire porn tends to do, and really not that much different either.

I predict a lot of emergency room visits for nilla folk.

I disagree.

No one is "smarter" than a vanilla person. Everyone here was vanilla at some point, everyone here didn't end up in the emergency room. I think people are generally going to research it more than a lot of people expect. I think most stuff done in 50 Shades (although I've never read it, I had a friend describe it in gross detail)- is pretty mainstream already. Spencer's Gifts has exsisted for years and sold most of the "bdsm lite" stuff- I think this appeals to the same people.

And horny old single ladies like my aunt who said I would "get rough sex" when I was in my 50's.

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/24/2014 10:18:33 AM)

Yeh I'm with shifty. Not many people will hurt themselves trying things from 50 shades because it's pretty tame and there's no reason to think they'll take more stupid risks after seeing the films than if they'd discovered the fantasy by themselves.

50 Shades is less about BDSM than it is typical romance novel elements.
- The girl who is (or thinks she is) plain and ordinary being idolized by someone special
- Being so attractive and desirable that your partner can't control themselves
- Being spoiled and made special by that person
- Being loved so deeply that your flawed but gorgeous lover will change for you

Pretty popular themes; the kinky shit just gives it a hint of dark edginess which is just enough to make it more acceptable to be seen reading (as opposed to the unfashionable Mills and Boon romances).

edit for typos

Here's some writing from a thoughtful local kinkster about the expected onslaught of newbies. http://xcbdsm.com/2014/07/24/get-ready-guys-nothing-can-stop-fifty-shades/

Don't forget the hero's smouldering eyes, kissable lips and chiselled jawline. The hero *always* has frigging smouldering eyes, kissable lips and a chiselled jawline.

LafayetteLady -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/24/2014 11:01:18 PM)

Well, I didn't find the trailer interesting at all. The link from DS is probably one of the best things I've read about the book's "impact."

I find commentts about how the book/movie "sullies" someone's kink very telling. As if they are involved ONLY because of the taboo-ness of it, like some kind of rebelling against perceived norms. Like Athena, I do what I enjoy. It doesn't matter if its mainstream or not. My likes don't become passe just because other people start to like them too.

Gauge -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/25/2014 3:10:37 AM)

When my slut and I first started talking she told me that she had read 50 Shades of Grey. I asked her if that is what she thought BDSM was all about, and she told me she knew that it was a different kind of dynamic. I told her that I am glad she didn't expect it to be like the book because 50 Shades of Grey would be what she turned when she found out otherwise.

As far as the contents of the book, I have never read it and couldn't care less to find out for myself what it is all about. If this gets people to talk about kink or to even begin to have an interest, then I am fine with it. Having people get interested in kink just because of this movie or book is not going to dilute the gene pool of twue BDSM, it actually might open some minds to look a little deeper inside themselves to see whether or not they want to learn more. As far as it weakening my interest in BDSM, I do not think that is even remotely possible, after what I have experienced, I could never turn back.

What I do think you may see is a small increase in possible injuries stemming from inexperienced people trying kink but not knowing basic safety practices. I remember an article about the police in London seeing an increase in calls to help people release handcuffs that had become stuck or jammed after the book hit the shelves. Whether or not it is true, who knows.

And the trailer was ghastly. It is not the type of movie that I would have interest in... ever.

Kinksters do end up in the emergency room, drastically expanding the number of kinksters should have some effect on the number of emergency room visits. Though if it's tamer stuff we might mostly just see a rise in fire department calls to cut handcuffs off.

That said I am a firm proponent that getting acquainted with community resources before doing much in the way of kink does mitigate risks vs. just reading a fantasy book or watching a porn. Take this couple for instance, if they'd found out they needed an adapter on fetlife instead of just seeing a fucksaw on Howard Stern some serious damage could have been avoided.

Maryland woman, reportedly aged 27, who was flown to Prince George’s Hospital for an injury which occurred on March 8, as a result of a sexual act involving the use of a reciprocating saw. The original 911 call was dispatched as a medical emergency....A man told authorities that he had placed a sex toy on a saber saw blade and that the blade had sawed through the plastic and severely wounded the woman.

Or some common sense could have prevented that from happening. I remember reading that a few years back when it first happened and thought WTF, can anyone lack that much common sense?

CreativeDominant -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/25/2014 10:44:05 AM)

I admit it...I read the book...or more accurately, tried reading the book.

Master Grey: Flawed (all dominants are...we're human), super-rich (maybe some dominants are), super handsome (o.k., SOME of us are...Grins), gives up on all his own rules for any relationship he will involve himself in to pursue this non-submissive female (yes, male dominants do that allllll the time), trained from a young age by a Mistress (really?), abused (really?) and , of course, the son of a whore (really? Yes...really).

Anastasia: During her first meeting with Christian, asks him if he's gay (I know that makes me want to further pursue a woman), attractive (of course), with a nice body (of course), not a particularly submissive demeanor nor any sign of responding to his dominant vibe (yep, that always tells dominants that this is the woman they should go for), accepts
His largesse while endlessly discussing the D/s contract but never signing it (hmmmm) and never submitting (though the author seems to think playing with his toys is submission)
I think the story in the link DS provided says it best...the book and the movie may spark some interest but there will need to be a lot of clarification done. Here is another link: http://thinkprogress.org/alyssa/2012/05/25/490132/fifty-shades-of-whatever-the-missed-opportunities-of-fifty-shades-of-grey

I agree with the author of the link when at the end, she notes that the 50 Shades author missed an opportunity to explore the nature of gender roles and sexual politics. The writer also made me smile when she described 50 Shades as the literary equivalent of a magazine article telling wives to greet their hubbies wrapped in Satan Wrap.

PeonForHer -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/25/2014 11:09:12 AM)

FR

I guess I'm not the target audience and am not in a position to judge, but don't both the female and the male in the lead roles look like dickheads?

InHisHeart -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/25/2014 11:40:36 AM)

I didn't read the book, I rarely read fictional novels but I thought about reading it until quite a few people I know who did read it said it was too repetitive and not near as exciting as they thought it would be.

As for Jamie Dornan, am I the only one who does not find him attractive?
