In my opinion...yes. What I love is that when you Google this movie, one of the promo shots that comes up is a guy blindfolded (and possibly bound) while the woman next to him appears to be in charge.

How wonderfully ironic...for a movie/book about male dominance. Almost as if they're conveying the heroine's thoughts...he is a man who chooses dominance because he knows not how to love...but he is blind. (Oh, the horrorible stultification of male dominance and female submission)[8|]

PeonForHer -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/25/2014 3:59:36 PM)

Oh god almighty, I *hate* the 'flawed male' trope. The man who has this frigging nuttiness in his psyche that only the heroine can 'save'. Bloody Mr Rochester, through Mickey Rourke's character in Nine and a Half Weeks .... Jesus, it's dreary. It's all 'he's almost perfect, but he has this Achilles Heel, which only little, plain and ordinary me, can save'. God I wish I could line up every would-be Heathcliff in the world alongside every would be Cathy, and machine gun the lot of them.

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/25/2014 11:01:43 PM)

Peon I agree with you, apart from Heathcliffe and Catherine. Wuthering Heights had two flawed and angsty lovers who totally failed to save each other, causing all sorts of pain and suffering by trying. Gothic melodrama aside, I find that much more realistic than the white knight saving the fragile flower and the woman who can fix a man's deep psychological issues through sheer force of love.

Or some common sense could have prevented that from happening. I remember reading that a few years back when it first happened and thought WTF, can anyone lack that much common sense?

Yeah...It is pretty dumbfounding that he owned a reciprocating saw but didn't realize it could cut through jelly.

But there are things which without a medical background people are unlikely to grasp on their own, positional asphyxia and nerve compression for instance.

hipgnosis -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/27/2014 4:26:11 PM)

50 shades is just another take on "what goes around comes around" like fashion/trends etc...I remember when 9.5 weeks came out and a couple of the girls i dated were very turned on by what they saw and very curious...it always under the surface just this time more acceptable to show interest or to be "fashionable" and buy some kink gear...I mean isn't it just from a reduction in all the "guilt" that has been dumped on us by the religion we practice and/or all the shrink sessions that tell us "it is OK, we are normal"...?

On a different note....I haven't read the book but I find the young characters a bit odd? would think an older man 40+ and say a woman younger say 30s would be more realistic or sexy? the woman would have more life experiences to give her some depth?

sorry to ramble on a Sunday...what was my point LOL

DrkJourney -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/27/2014 4:38:40 PM)

I really don't care about the movie one way or the other. If I watch it at all it will be when it come to Skinamax or whatever. My problem with the movie is the part of Grey....I would've preferred Charlie (the original) or Alex Skaarsgard....the guy just looks boring......LOL

KYsissy -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/27/2014 4:53:55 PM)

Fr
I find it amusing to see a whole slew of women I know who I would never suspect had the slightest inclination toward BDSM are just beside themselves over this movie.
Personally, I think a removal of the taboo is a good thing.

I agree with TN That there will be an increase in ER visits, just like there have been with every major "publicizing" Kink book/movie

I saw the trailer at work and snorted at it. Im out to several people and they came to me after seeing it and it became the...

No nothing in this movie is really Kink.... Its twilight fan fiction turned stupid.... No controlling abusive assholes arent dominants.... They are controlling abusive assholes....

And the questions went......
Well do you really?
No... We dont do that shit....
Well what about....
No... We dont do that shit....
But I really thought this was realistic....
No... We dont do that shit....

We do this instead.....

........ I became out to more people at work at that point... and several managers including my own.... want to come to a kink event to see how it really is.... >_<

LMAO... I think you may have called it in that one.

MsWickedPig -> RE: "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie thoughts (7/28/2014 1:37:36 AM)

I honestly have not read the "50 Shades" Trilogy, due to my own personal reservations about literature that is written along the lines of BDSM. My first introduction into a well crafted, literary piece belongs to the Sleeping Beauty trilogy, written by Anne Rice.

As many have stated before that, "50 Shades" just incites many misguided, uneducated acts that try to depict what the BDSM lifestyle is about, this may dilute the lifestyle... Then again, the more that the culture is brought to light, it would be more recognized as a culture rather than a subculture. As someone that had stated before me, "the more the merrier".

No, in no way would this be some "water cooler talk" unless you are prepared to educated and enlighten some that are willing for such. I apologize if I might sound somewhat irrelevant, but I just think that the Fifty Shades fad, merely gets me shaking my head towards the reactions of the vanilla people that display such a fanatical interest towards a sadly crafted (society is also at fault) taste of a kinky fantasy

I lost respect for that character completely.

1. He entrapped Basinger's character (BC for short) by using a hidden cam to film her going through his stuff. He told her she would get a spanking as a punishment. Then he got horny and decided to screw her instead and forgot about punishing her. In other words, he was a Dom until his dick got hard.
2. BC visited him at work. Huge office, no sign of him ever doing any work there. Lazy guy, not to mention that he was dishonest in "working" a high powered job and never doing anything in return for for the salary and perks. Not a good Dom attribute. For some weird reason, effortless affluence seems to be a desirable Dom attribute in literature.
3. At the end, BC left and his response was to sit there and cry pathetically. I have seen a genuine Dom in that same position, where his sub was about to leave with no warning, and he sat her down, asked what her reasons were, and spent two hours in earnest conversation finding out what her issues were and trying to work out solutions with her. (I ended up being the counselor.) You know, taking control of a situation and trying to resolve issues, like Doms are supposed to do.

No, it won't. How can the lifestyle be diluted? By getting some new people investigating BDSM? Horrors, horrors I tell you.

Getting new people interested in BDSM isn't a bad thing at all. You may get the sort of people that think that the movie reflects real life... which it will not, but so what? It certainly does not affect me and what my slut and I do, nor will it affect you, or anyone else and what they already do. People may come here and learn. The more they learn they might be turned off or turned on by it. If couples out there have some kinky sex, good for them, maybe they needed a little spice in their life. Either way, the BDSM gene pool is fine no matter how this movie influences anyone.

Actually it will, With the influx of new people being fucking stupid, comming out to real life play parties playing I want to injure my sub with my great awesome 50 shades power. It does Affect anyone that Dms, it affects the mood of play parties and it affects the general vibe, if the DMS have to stop 10 scenes when before they stopped perhaps one a night, it changes how everything is perceived.. Makes it a heavier air that feels a bit suffocating...

Now if your magically lucky to never have to play at a public event.... not so much of the affecting of you... For those of us who only play at public events.... its going to fucking suck...

Also with the influx of newbies heavier players like myself are told to "turn it down" at a lot of the events that have the new influx of newbies so that we dont make the little fuckers piss their pants...or we need to have 4 to 5 DMs monitor the scene to explain to the newbies, why the sledge hammer crow bar cricket bat and steel baseball bat, are really in fact toys...

Which means either I dont get my freak on or have to answer endless questions after when im trying to ride my high, which makes me cranky.....

So YES the influx of 50 shades does affect me, and will affect local communities.....

Weren't we all newbies at one time? Someone being a newbie doesn't mean they're going to be fucking stupid or piss their pants with what they see. Didn't something spark our interest in the lifestyle at some point before we actually got involved, a book, movie, our own fantasies?

Ha! I know right! Reason I say that, y'all, is bc after they try the tame stuff, they'll want to do other stuff.
They'll look at images on google for BDSM, and say "hey honey look at how she's hanging upside down, let's try that from the ceiling fan"
.....cue ambulance sirens....
