In many cases a man doesn't need a gun to do great harm to a woman... While a woman under assault, could really use some help

quote:

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - A new public service announcement released by an anti-gun group created by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg has gone viral.

Part of the attention drawn to the video is the mixed message, some say, it is drumming up. The video by Everytown for Gun Safety is intended to show the dangers of guns in the hands of domestic abusers, but the victim, a woman, is seen helpless because she has no gun to protect herself.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — An angry husband sprayed his father-in-law's house with bullets from two 30-round magazines, killing two people, after his wife ran to the home during an argument Wednesday.

The man later exchanged gunfire with authorities and died of a gunshot wound after hitting several deputies and a state trooper, Cumberland County Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler said.

"He just went wild," Butler said of the shooter. "I mean, shooting at random. He just turned it loose, that automatic. He unloaded it every time I think he pulled up there" in front of the victims' house.

The violence began before 7 a.m., when 41-year-old Valerie Michaelis called 911 for help, authorities said. Michaelis and her husband, Andrew, were arguing and she said he was holding her at gunpoint.

Investigators said Valerie Michaelis got the gun from her husband, who then pursued her with a knife. She fled to her father's house.

Seven people were in the house when authorities say Andrew Michaelis drove by in his truck and discharged a 30-round magazine from what authorities described as an assault rifle. He killed two people: his wife's father, 61-year-old Gary Simpson, and Simpson's 10-year-old grandson, Trekwan Covington. Among those in the house was Ryan Michaelis, 13, who was there "because of problems in the home," Butler said.

His father knew Ryan was in the Simpson home, the sheriff said.

MAINE
Gun in apartment killed family of five
A family of five, including three children, were found shot to death Sunday inside a southern Maine apartment, authorities said.

Investigators said a gun was found near one of the bodies, and it appeared that no one outside the family was responsible for the shootings.

State police Sgt. Chris Harriman said murder-suicide is one of the scenarios being investigated but that a determination will be made by the state medical examiner’s office.
Authorities did not release the names of the family but said the parents were in their 30s and the children were ages 4, 7 and 12.

A former Minnesota corrections officer is accused of gunning down a teenager who asked him to stop trespassing on her property.

Chad Pickering, 40, of Eckles Township, faces one count of premeditated first-degree attempted murder. The alleged victim's name is not being released due to her age.

On Monday, a 17-year-old neighbor asked Pickering to stop riding his lawn mower through her yard. The girl later told police that in recent weeks Pickering had repeatedly trespassed while riding his lawn mower and carrying a holstered pistol across her property, authorities said.

Later, at about 10 p.m., the teen stepped outside to check on her dog and saw a shadowy figure crouched down by a nearby pine tree. Before she could react, she was shot in her chest, right thigh and left ankle, according to the police report.

The teen fell down, but managed to drag herself inside the house and call 911. It was during the 911 call that the teen relayed information to the police about Pickering being a possible suspect. When emergency responders arrived on the scene, they transported the girl to a hospital in Duluth.

The teen is reportedly recovering but her friend and neighbor Brianna Benson told The Star Tribune that doctors said it could take months before she walks again.

“One bullet missed her heart by 2 inches,” Benson said.

Questioned by police, Pickering initially denied any involvement. However, when investigators obtained a search warrant for his home and found a Kimber .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun hidden inside – a weapon that matched bullet casings found at the crime scene – he allegedly confessed.

PENNSYLVANIA
Police: Man shot self after killing his son
A Philadelphia man is accused of fatally shooting his 5-year-old son and critically wounding the boy’s mother before trying to kill himself as officers closed in, police said.

Investigators said Tyrell Styles, 26, shot his son, Cion, in the head and wounded Shyema Washington at an apartment complex in Folsom, where they had been attending a children’s birthday party Saturday night.

Ridley Township police said Styles led them on a chase and then shot himself after officers cornered his vehicle.

Investigators told the Delaware County Daily Times that Washington and her son had been staying with relatives after a recent argument with Styles. Officials said he had no criminal record and was licensed to carry the gun.

DETROIT (AP) — Sporadic gunfire isn't an unusual sound in the Brewster Homes public housing complex in Detroit, but booming noises that shook Tenesha Higgins early Wednesday morning were way too close.

Numerous shots were fired at an apartment building, with one piercing a wall and hitting an 8-year-old boy who was sleeping. The child — who Higgins described as a "good boy" who loved playing baseball — died 45 minutes later.

http://www.chron.com/neighborhood/spring/news/article/Fatal-Spring-shooting-leaves-5-dead-suspect-5610401.php
Six members of a Spring family, including four children and two adults, were shot to death Wednesday after an apparent domestic dispute at their Spring home and a relative was arrested hours later after a police chase and a tense standoff in the cul-de-sac of a nearby neighborhood.

Authorities held a news conference about 5:30 a.m. Thursday to announce that Ron Lee Haskell, 33, had been captured and charged after a slow-speed chase and lengthy standoff.

A 15-year-old girl was wounded in the shooting at the home in the 700 block of Leaflet Lane and was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital where she remained in critical condition late Wednesday.

Harris County Sheriff's Office identified the victims as two males, ages 4 and 13, two females, ages 6 and 9, and two adults, a 39-year-old male and a 34-year-old female.

Mark Herman, assistant chief deputy for the Precinct 4 Harris County constable, said authorities responded to a report of a shooting about 6 p.m. at the home on Leaflet Lane. There they found five people dead and two others with gunshot wounds to the head. Both were taken by Life Flight helicopter to the hospital, where one of them died.

Before being flown to the hospital, one of the wounded was able to tell police that the shooting arose from a domestic dispute involving "someone who had left the family."

Herman said the victim, a female, gave them a description of the person, the type of car he was in, and said he was on his way to kill other family members at another address.

The NRA News website describes Johnson’s commentary as an examination of how “we tend to curb our right to bear arms in America rather than celebrate it.” But the video seems to be part of the NRA’s ongoing effort to appeal to young people after research suggests that the younger generation tends to steer away from gun ownership. If that trend continues, the gun industry may be in trouble when it comes to sales in upcoming years.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are roughly 81,300 injuries and 31,672 deaths every year involving guns in the United States.

of course everyone needs a gun to defend themselves....

2 people died, that really helped them didnt it.... she didnt shoot him...would have been better for everyone if she had....is she to blame????????????

Domestic abuse victims, really have little use for guns until they finally snap, and kill their abusers....if they dont get killed first

And nobody shields themselves like the first image - that's all rather mega-dramatic.
Pretty much what you'd expect from gundiots [:D]

Take the guns away from the populace and the 2nd image won't be necessary.
And.... nobody would get shot!!

The empirical evidence unquestionably establishes that gun ownership by prospective victims not only allows them to resist criminal attack, but also deters violent criminals from attacking them in the first place. ~Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy

BS
domestic abusers use all kinds of weapons, the only thing that evens things up for the woman is a firearm.
True they wouldn't get shot, they would be carved up or beaten to death but hey that's ok as long as they don't get shot.

Only punks think that women are helpless defenseless little girls who need you to hold their hand. Your solution to every problem is a gun. This would be indicative of a stunted intellect.

Edited to add: And they don't even flinch[8D]

joether -> RE: Bloomberg anti-gun ad backfires (7/31/2014 6:04:36 PM)

When I've asked gun owners why they have a firearm, the response is: To protect myself.

Ok...from what?

"Someone that might try to hurt me."

Ok, who is that person? "I don't know, someone..."

Are they tall? Are they short? Are they athletic built? Are they fat? Are they skinny? Are they skilled as CQB? Do they have one or more weapons? Do they have training (military, law enforcement, criminal backgrounds)? Do they have friends? Do those friends have weapons? Are they all attacking from the same direction? Or flanking on both sides? Or hitting on two sides at once? Does the person attacking and/or his/her friends have a vehicle useful in breaching (i.e. construction equipment, armor, or 'ramming vehicle')?

And its usually 'No' across the board. To which I ask....If that is all true, how do you know if that gun will do you any good? I ask them if they have a fully stocked medical kit on par with an 'EMT's bag'? Most of them say 'no'. Even though the sort of things one could get in trouble with, with be helped more by such a bag than without it.

The point is this: We can all argue on fantasy and 'what if' situations from all sides. And there is more than one or two sides to this issue. A firearm is only helpful in 0.01% of possible emergencies. In some emergencies it can bring about even more problems. So we can either deal in 'fantasyland' with all of our pet peeves on the topic of firearms in America; or look at the primary topic of the thread.

My opinion of Bloomberg's ad? Not very well thought out,. I can see the point he's trying to make, in that allowing abusers to obtain firearms is wrong. Yet, the other hand, having a firearm the possible victim's hands in that moment...might...change the final outcome of events.

And I say 'might' from a tactical point of view. Its one think to shoot at paper targets, in an A/C conditioned room, with plenty of time to pick up the gun, load it, and aim down range before firing. Quite a different thing, when picking up the gun, aiming, and firing at a target while your body is in the middle of 'fight or flight' response. That's were the blood drains from your hands and feet towards your chest; firing guns accurately is sharply impaired. The attacker(s) have had time to steady their nerves/rage towards the victim(s) and generally have surprise on their side. The defender(s) are STILL reacting to in the initial onslaught.

What percentage of people actually train for this sort of thing? How their body, mind and emotions react? On the spur of the moment? To handle things like one or more attacker(s) initiating hostiles on the spur of the moment and without possible warning?

Outside of Military and Law Enforcement? less than 1% is my guess.

Having a loaded gun is one thing. Having the will to use it, is quite another. You can train all you want on those paper targets, and it'll mean shit when the real thing happens. Firearm owners are not all psychotic. They will and do try to end the confrontation peacefully while keeping the attackers from hurting them or others further. An therein lies the problem. If they call your bluff, and you do not act, that gun is as meaningless or more than if one didn't have a firearm.
