Wrong again - no gunophobe me. I own several and enjoy shooting at the range.

Oh come on - you KNOW the NRA nutbaggers will blame Obama for this.

I see No adults Peon, I see someone using a biased web source to post a biased article that uses a tragedy involving a child in a terrible way, but I see this often from people who dont live in the US when their stance is against guns so I dont know why Im surprised....

The kid shouldnt have been using an Uzi no gun owner would disagree with this, the 40 thousand (estimation) other children that died today because of parental neglect shouldnt have died either....

Why only post the gun death? Why not post the car crash because of a drunk driver

I went to bbc news and see 6 stories on us gun deaths.... Nope, theres no bias there at all...

Or the dozen or so kids who have died this summer because their idiot parents left them in hot cars and went drinking.

One of the local Casinos gave people 100 dollars in free slot play, when they showed that they dropped their kids off at a daycare before coming to play because the previous summer they had over 20 kids locked in a hot car so mommy and daddy could gamble...

Yes, happens here too, and August in Alabama is a little warmer than in Penn. The parents should be horse whipped for doing that either place.

No problem.

If you looked beyond the Op you would have seen I said i am okay with kids getting gun training. I have also said on other threads I am okay with people carrying guns where needed. Speaking out on needless killings or mass shootings doesnt make me anti-gun as some of your fellow posters like to paint me.

*Most people*, in *every* first world country on the planet, would look at this story and think, 'Jesus, what lunacy do they allow to go on in the USA?' You simply have no idea of how frigging extreme and frequently insane your society looks to the rest of us, basically.

I see that you're fairly new here. Heads up: what you see as moderate by US standards, is not moderate by world standards. You are using a forum that is mostly, but unfortunately for you not completely, American. Expect to have your comfy "middle of the road" certainties uprooted, time and time again.

I see you make assumptions, you look like an ass, this isnt my first go around in the forums, so I know that there are a fair number of posters from outside the US.

I also know that you have no idea what my certainties so thanks for telling me what I know what I dont and what might make me feel uncomfortable.... You dont know where Ive lived what countries I might have spent a fair a mount of time in or anything else...

So how about you stick to something you know... Your life and your experiences.... and Ill stick to things I know and MY experiences....

This is a fast reply.

When I was a kid, my father took me out to a shooting range with a .22 rifle. I must have been 8 or 9 at the time. Before bullets were even put into the gun, my Dad explained gun safety to me. He showed me what to do and what not to do. He had me go over the rules with him and he had me repeat everything back to him. He never left my side and he guided me every step of the way. I am all for gun safety and responsible gun ownership.

This article simply points to stupidity and how ridiculous and arrogant some parents are to think that their child is able to handle something like this. These were not responsible parents, nor was the instructor a responsible adult. The thing that makes me sick is that this kid is going to have to live with this the rest of her life. I am all for child services to come in and take the kid and have the parents charged with reckless endangerment.

That a gun was involved can be spun however way you want it to depending on your political bent, however what cannot be spun is the underlying cause for this tragic accident to have happened in the first place. Of course kids die in this country every day, so, it doesn't make this article better because it has a gun in it, it makes it worse simply because this is how far we have sunk in this country. We have a generation of undisciplined children raising a generation of undisciplined children and what we see every day is the result. I am not even sure we can reverse this trend, and I certainly do not know how to stop it. I wish I did.

And do you suppose that at least part of the reason we have undisciplined children who only look like adults is because for almost the last 35 - 40 years that laws went so far in "protecting the child" and "raising up his little self-esteem" that eventually parents, and anyone else in authority, became afraid to discipline a child? Careful...might damage their little psyche.

I think it's less fear, although your point is well-taken, and more a libertine attitude that children can do anything. The schools don't help and the pseudo-self-esteem movement is terrible. Real self-esteem is essential, but the self-esteem movement promotes feeling great about yourself in the absence of any accomplishments or triumphs or efforts. That breeds narcissism and attendant insecurity, not a well-functioning adult.

do
Right, my kid had the rules down, not as rules, but simply as the way things are. The problem here is bad parenting. The parents don't seem to have, as the saying goes, "enough sense to pound sand in a rat hole" (personally I would prefer a ferret, but I digress,), and don't know when to say no. Clearly they didn't know how to choose someone to teach her gun safety because he didn't know what he was doing.

Completely spot on.

Not every kid should get a trophy for participating, there should be a winner and a loser because that is just how life is. I can tell you that every time a kid legitimately gets in trouble at school and the parents threaten to sue or do sue the school, we are telling little Johnny that it is OK to be a fucking asshole. Kids step off the sidewalk in front of moving cars without even thinking that they might actually get hit rather than wait for the car to pass and then cross the street safely. When a child can get their parents arrested for using reasonable discipline, the parents no longer have that element of fear based respect behind them.

I could go on... but you get the idea. We have to start teaching our kids respect, common sense, how to problem solve, as well as the value of consequences.

It might be worth tossing in a few practical tips too, like don't rob stores or make a move on armed cops. Because if you really want to trace the fault for this kind of shit, the trail leads straight back to the parents and the community.
