I respect hard limits and ask about the reasons for soft limits. My first thought upon reading the O/P was about the limitations people put on themselves whether it be personal, career, athletic or bdsm. Taking a certain perceived pain threshold for example, I have witnessed and experienced situations where a subject was able to endure beyond previous levels through careful deliver of more intensity. In this instance pushing past limits was appreciated and both a great experience. There are other scenarios I could see where pushing beyond limits would be beneficial but as I said hard limits should never be seen as something to be pushed beyond.
