ORIGINAL: ChrchofDrk Oh I've heard tell of "paying" a "slave" a buck a month or year. Some insignificant stipend that suffices as monetary pay. Or opening an account for the "slave" that h/she only has access to in the event of release. There's many ways to circumvent the "law". Still, a contract is only as good as your word Neither of these would be legal - let alone legally binding - employment contracts under US federal labor law, though. "Household employees" (servants) are required to be paid at least minimum wage, even if they're provided room and board, and can't be contract employees, let alone ones that work for $1. Not only would that contract not be legally binding, the slave could easily leave and sue their ex-"employer" for back wages for the whole time they were "employed", and the IRS would also come after the Master/Mistress for back payroll taxes for those back wages.
