The one thing that really irks me is the change in the sound of a word. I often hear news readers pronouncing a country or province very differently to how its been pronounced before and then everyone starts pronouncing it that way. I can't think of an example though!

I remember when the planet Uranus was in the news---cannot remember why---but the media pronounced it "Yer-a-nuss" because they couldn't bring themselves to say "Your-Anus"!!!

Not only that, but Saddam Hussein's name. I think Bush Jr. was deliberately pronouncing it "Sodom" with the accent on the first syllable instead of the second. Then I noticed that TV journalists had changed their inflection as well, where they had previously been pronouncing it the other way.

Oh gosh, go to a conflagration of astrologers (a fraction of whom are also astronomers, some are scientists and educators), and many deliberately avoid the conventional pronunciation for Uranus. Must be vanilla modesty, most people tend to blush or snicker. In Greek, the name for Father Sky or the first Ruler of the Universe was Oranos, father of the Greek Titan (pre-Olympian) Cronos/Kronos, Roman Saturn or Father Time. Oranos' equivalent in Roman mythology was Caelus. Technically, this planet is called and spelled Uranus, but it would not be incorrect to refer to the original deity for whom this planet was named as being Oranos.

Ummm... in all fairness, we are going to need to inquire with the oracle...

BRB, going to see the magic 8 ball...

Umm... turns out that it is a bit subjective... "Signs point to yes." So, take from it what you will.

Jus sayin

My grammars is always perfectative because I are a jenius. Personages who ain't using proper grammers perspectify themselves as low class.

I also, puctuate, properly - with no deviation's.

I am fairly certain I gave someone a heart attack with those two sentences.

Actually, it was big Daddy George who mispronounced Saddam as "SADum." He supposedly did so to show disrespect. Also, that pronunciation was rumored to translate unfavorably in Arabic. Personally, I think "Your mother wears army boots" would have sent him over the edge and out of that hole they found him in far more effectively.

That may be so, but I distinctly heard Dubya placing emphasis on "SOD'um" repeatedly, and then news commentators following suit, which translates unfavorably to the English-speaking general public. [:-]

Also, I never quite understood what was such a cut down about "Your mother wears combat boots." [8D]
Not my own mother's style, but I would have been proud if my mom had been a soldier or was otherwise serving my country.

Ummmm, in my mind Micky Rooney was sitting on a fence shaking his fist at the group of bullies in an adolescent attempt of "one uppery." You know, heady psychological, warfare on a deeply personal level stuff. All the chic despots resort to it nowadays. Ask Putin and Merkel, it's all the rage.
As for your mother and her choice of footwear/occupation. I'm sure she would have rocked combat boots and you'd have been right to glow with pride.

Good grammar, along with decent spelling, punctuation and such, suggests the writer made an effort to proof-read it before hitting send.

Effort is important as it shows the writer appreciates the value and necessity of good communication. Communication skills are social skills, perhaps an important aspect of any relationship.

Sure, you will find imperfections with anyone's prose but that didn't mean the author didn't make an effort. Given its complexity, even professors of English don't know all of the ins and outs of the language.

That said, poor language use makes for a poor first impression.

Some of the older lawyers and high court judges in the UK are notorious for not understanding "every day" speak; so much so, anyone who has ever worked with them will eventually feel battered down by their refusal to understand abbreviated words. A barrister I once worked for, who greeted every male criminal with, "Nice to meet old boy. Do you fox hunt?" Didn't understand words like "photo" or "memo". I often had to translate perfectly acceptable English to him when I honestly had better things to do. He once offered to make me a coffee and I asked him for "decaf". He wandered into the kitchen and quickly returned saying, "we don't have a coffee called decaf". "DECAFFEINATED" I frustratingly informed him; "Oh" he said, "you should of said".

You should have a read about Linford Christie in court. The subject of Mr Christie's 'lunchpack' came up. Of course, the judge needed the term to be explained to him and it fell to Linford to spell it out. Poor old Linford. Embarrassing: very, very much.
