It does matter to me, I feel like a bit of an arsehole sometimes because it does, because in the great scheme of things I'm not sure it's very important but I can't help it, it annoys the absolute crap out of me. My grammar isn't perfect but I do try and I expect other people to too. I appreciate attention to detail and someone who has self-discipline and I think it's pretty sloppy to have reached a certain age and not know how to use basic grammar (unless there is a valid reason). It makes me want to correct them all of the time and I feel like a dick for correcting people over such nonsense. I also don't want to be put in the role where I 'have to' correct other people. The worst ones for me are lose and loose, your and you're and capitalising random words, they bring out the headmistress in me every time and I don't want to be a headmistress. I don't mind being picked up on my own grammar though, I quite like it actually. Having a headmaster is much more fun than being a headmistress.

Grammar is a basic skill in communication. Using the correct tense, spelling, punctuation or prose says alot about how you convey yourself to and influences how you are perceived by others. Having said that, it's accepted there are a variety of tools people use to communicate with online. For the sake of expediency or as a result of a passionate moment not all grammar will be perfect when I write. I use my phone often and switching from screen to screen for the right character or to edit can be a pita most of the time. My vote is where grammar is important, it's not always a true representation of a persons intelligence as written online. One thing though and this is a peeve of mine, when you speak to others try not to sound ignorant. I'm amazed at the lack of speaking skills portrayed in the streets, on television, in schools, etc. To add, I'm appalled profanity when put to music makes millionaires and blasted publicly without regard to age or innocence of non consensual listeners has become the norm. Another thing.......! Lord, I'd better stop before I hijack this thread and climb higher on this shaky soapbox

Yes, that too; but dialect and relaxed/informal pronunciation that varies from region to region is what catches foreigners out. For example, in foreign language school you will be taught to say, " je ne sais pas" and of course the French will understand you when you say that to them but you may hear them say, “ch'ais pas” (same meaning) which isn't something you have probably learnt in your very correct language class. The French are very good at abbreviating words and rolling one into another and this tends to leave a lot of English tourists lost. The French have the same problem when learning English; whilst they learn to say, "Its good isn't it?" they will probably hear "good init?" or "Its not bad eh?" whilst in the UK.

without reading all the responses, someones grammar doesn't matter as long I can figure out what they are saying.... a lot of people don't know the English language very well... face it the English language is hard to learn.... too many words with the same sound but different meanings and written different.... just saying [:'(]

I am less concerned with grammar than I am with text speak. If you write me with UR or L8R I cannot deal with you. You are too lazy or too young for me.

For me it depends if it is written or spoken grammar. Spoken grammar is much more important, I'm able to look past horrific spelling and a lack of grammar. Malapropisms, double negatives and generally lazy speaking makes my brain cringe. Maybe I'm a snob? I was raised by an English teacher who had been raised by an English teacher. We weren't allowed to say 'yeah' as kids, it had to be 'yes'. I've gotten a lot lazier as I've gotten older, and also less picky. When typing I'm not great with punctuation, it slows down my fingers lol. And I begin sentences with 'and' a lot! Maybe in another decade I'll be more forgiving with the spoken word as well. Good grammar isn't an exact measure of intelligence, intellectually I know that but emotionally a well spoken person is more attractive to me.
