Good grief, really?

quote:

Under the scheme, family doctors will be asked to identify anyone who has gained weight and is at risk of diabetes – particularly those aged below 40.

They will then be offered tests for pre-diabetes, followed by healthy lifestyle advice and close monitoring to ensure they are eating better and exercising more.

Two plus two makes five, now?

I think I have read about this sort of close monitoring before:

quote:

'Smith!' screamed the shrewish voice from the telescreen. '6079 Smith W.! Yes, you! Bend lower, please! You can do better than that. You're not trying. Lower, please! That's better, comrade. Now stand at ease, the whole squad, and watch me.'

A sudden hot sweat had broken out all over Winston's body. His face remained completely inscrutable. Never show dismay! Never show resentment! A single flicker of the eyes could give you away. He stood watching while the instructress raised her arms above her head and — one could not say gracefully, but with remarkable neatness and efficiency — bent over and tucked the first joint of her fingers under her toes.

'There, comrades! That's how I want to see you doing it. Watch me again. I'm thirty-nine and I've had four children. Now look.' She bent over again. 'You see my knees aren't bent. You can all do it if you want to,' she added as she straightened herself up. 'Anyone under forty-five is perfectly capable of touching his toes. We don't all have the privilege of fighting in the front line, but at least we can all keep fit. Remember our boys on the Malabar front! And the sailors in the Floating Fortresses! Just think what they have to put up with. Now try again. That's better, comrade, that's much better,' she added encouragingly as Winston, with a violent lunge, succeeded in touching his toes with knees unbent, for the first time in several years...

I am glad that for now I do not live in Airstrip One.

It's identifying people at risk for diabetes, who will then be offered tests for pre-diabetes, followed by healthy lifestyle advice.

Oh the horrors.

Is that so bad? to offer people that have gained weight an alternative and ways to eat and live healthier, better lives? They aren't going to be thrown into a sweatshop/jail to work off the pounds, it will be their choice to say no or yes..

from that article-
"Major research has found that losing just 5 to 7 per cent of weight can reduce the change of diabetes by nearly 60 per cent, he said. "

from a link on that page to another article..

"5lb weight loss cuts breast cancer death risk by two-thirds
Death rates for the deadliest cancers are up to 70 per cent lower among those who lose weight"

This part: "close monitoring to ensure they are eating better and exercising more."

How exactly is that going to be accomplished? I mean, we do HAVE telescreen technology now. Do you get a stamped card from the local gym for going? How do you ensure someone is eating better? Online food diaries?

Ensuring that diet and exercise is being accomplished is more than just being given some advice.

Do you see the difference between offering and dictating?

Musicmystery -> RE: Doctors told to report patients who put on weight (12/26/2014 3:38:04 PM)

Do you see evidence of forced anything?

Geez. Let the fuckers become diabetics, instead of helping them prevent it.

Maybe just fucking shoot them. Fun for all! With automatic weapons and unstamped ammo.

Here's the ominous threat:

“We are calling for a national new year's resolution in January to tackle the aftermath of turkey, pud and cake,” he said.

On current trends, 63 per cent of men in their 50s will be obese by 2034, along with 38 per cent of women, official data shows.

If average rates of obesity were brought back to 1993 levels, around five million incidences of disease could be prevented in two decades, official forecasts show.

I expect that is for those that want to get on the program.. just like for weight watchers.. maybe they will be advised to get one of these.. http://www.amazon.com/Weight-Watchers-Activelink-Activity-Monitor/dp/B008PCM8Q4 or some other such monitoring device..

Do you see the difference between information being between the doctor and the patient in the doctor-patient relationship...a confidential relationship...and information going outside the doctor-patient relationship to the government so that the government can now become involved in your treatment plan?

You act as if the government being directly involved in your healthcare...even in an advisory capacity...is o.k.

"GPs will be asked to identify patients who are putting on weight under a new national programme to help fight obesity."

Identify. And then follow up with their patients.

"Report" is the Telegraphs--not the sanest of publications--sensationalist headline.

The government isn't going to do anything about it except ask doctors to do it, and presumably pass on the data (which need not contain names, just numbers).

I don't have time to teach you. If you can't figure out that the doctors do the care and report the numbers, you'll have to find someone willing to invest time in your remedial tutelage.

Targeting pre-diabetics and offering preventive care, instruction, and follow-up is not a bad thing. It's certainly damn better than contracting diabetes.

And if you don't think so, I don't think I can help you with that either.

You don't have to teach me anything. Maybe you're willing to give the government the benefit of the doubt but the article does not indicate what you say it does.
The article says to identify and report overweight patients to the N.H.S.. The N.H.S. will then send advice to these identified patients. That is the government...through the insurance it provides...being involved in what should be between the doctor and the patient.

LiveSpark -> RE: Doctors told to report patients who put on weight (12/26/2014 4:07:35 PM)

Aylee how can you not see that identifying patients who are at risk of developing diabetes (for example) and helping to prevent it by encouraging a healthy lifestyle as bad. It's called preventative medicine and it's a good thing.
