Sure there is... perhaps some required training would have helped... Certainly an intelligence test...[:D] The husband should be prosecuted and perhaps sterilized for marrying such an idiot.

Did not a certain man in Australia get prison time for shooting blindly through a door... How about a law for careless discharge of a weapon. A little time in the slammer may deter the next dumb ass that decides to shoot blindly through a door to think twice... remember that could have been a child.

South Africa.
Intelligence test? You have to be kidding.
Intelligence is not the same as common sense.
There is no relationship between the two cases.
How many other constitutionally guaranteed rights do you want to make people take a test before they exorcise? Once you establish something like that for one right it would be applicable for them all.
You don't want to change a slippery slope into a cliff do you?

kdsub -> RE: Woman accidentally shoots husband who tried to surprise her with breakfast (1/10/2015 2:35:57 PM)

Are you against mandatory training...? Are you against careless discharge of a weapon law.... hmmmmm someone else needs an intelligence test... and you know I was kidding about intelligence... to a point. Do you think it is ok to shoot through doors without knowing who is there?

No plenty of common sense laws that could apply... by the way was it his weapon... was she licensed... did she call out a warning or ask who was there? we don't know all the circumstances.

Firearms are the third-leading cause of injury-related deaths nationwide, following poisoning and motor vehicle accidents.

Gun ownership is regulated.

So, people can't comment because "we don't know all the circumstances," yet, you get to put out your analysis of the situation?

If you looked at that thread you already know what I think about blindly shooting through doors.
I also don't approve of anything careless.
How much do you want to add to the cost of owning a firearm for this mandatory training?
Do you want to deprive poorer people of the right of self defense?
You are right, we don't know what happened, the whole thing sounds kind of fishy.
How about we get all the facts before we go off the deep end and decide what this proves?

kdsub -> RE: Woman accidentally shoots husband who tried to surprise her with breakfast (1/10/2015 3:03:50 PM)

Where did that come from... We just do not know what went down... I said she shot through the door carelessly... But she could have called and the husband wanted to scare her... It would make a difference don't you think?

If he pretended to be an intruder doesn't the onus fall on him and not her, at least in part? That makes more sense than her just cutting loose through the door.

More than poisons and automobiles.

So if she had not had a gun and that had not been her husband, her being raped and killed would be just hunky-dory?

That is just sick.

If she had the proper training with a weapon she would not have shot through a door...see the difference? If it was a rapist and he came through the door she could have shot him with a lot better chance of hitting him... or if she yelled she had a gun the real rapist would most likely of left... Then the police could have been called... either way the husband is not shot.

I think you were aiming this at someone else.
I was disagreeing with this being an excuse to restrict ownership.

How do you know she shot through the door carelessly, if you don't know what went down? Are you saying that shooting through a closed door is always careless? Or, was her shooting through the door careless because he's okay even though she shot him?

The closer the intruder gets, the more danger she is in. You are essentially saying that she has no right to be in fear for her life until he has actually begun his attack.

It is still a matter of if we don't know what happened how can we possibly decide on a solution, unless we have a "solution" and are just waiting for an excuse to promote it?

Well it didn't work out so well did it. I agree with kd, if she had yelled out a real rapist likely would have run. Even if he didn't she would have had a better shot after he opened the door when she could see him. As things turned out she shot her partner, not exactly a good outcome.

There is no indication that
A He did anything to let her know it was him.
B A rapist would have believed her if she warned him.
C That he would have believed she would use it, after all, how many times have we been told that the criminal would just take the gun away from you.

Purely speculation but he probably assumed she knew it was him which if true is incredibly stupid. Maybe a rapist would believe her maybe he would take a chance she's bluffing. Either way it didn't turn out so well did it.

One of the first things ANY responsible gun owner or user learns is to IDENTIFY YOUR TARGET. She obviously did not do this. She knew approximately where the "target" was located. But she did not identify the target. Hunters are shot every year because someone sees brush move, and so fire blindly into the brush thinking they are shooting a deer, or elk, or...? Here she shot blindly through the door, not knowing who she was shooting at.
