Yep, it's the Terrifying Libertarian Conspiracy! They want to spend *their own money* to elect politicians who will . . . leave you alone!

How awful! How terrifying! How wrong!

Ya wanna talk about how much Soros spends?

ah yes, the 529s are held by an amazing majority of americans...oh no....hang on... 12 million

that leaves about (conservative estimate) a huge number of americans (93mill out of work) that just cant be bothered, and are freeloading cos everyone can afford college...parent or students..
but we will *just* accept they just cant be bothered

She said a number of families, not an amazing majority of americans. But I agree it's wrong to assume anyone who didn't plan ahead just couldn't be bothered. Of course that doesn't change the fact that the ones who have put in because they were promised they could withdraw it without penalty are going to be screwed.

Derp !
I never said the figures were hers, I did some research to find the figures by myself, like big people do.

Free community college? Not really! Here is a bit of one tax he intends to raise to pay for it. Nothing is free ever! He has decided to fuck over the people that are doing the right thing to pay for the god damn freeloaders.

A number of families have been taking advantage of what are called 529 plans, in order to save money for their children's college education. Under the current law, 529 plans work a lot like Roth IRAs: you put money in, the money grows tax-free for college and withdrawals and distributions are tax-free provided they are to pay for college. So that encourages people to save for their children's education.

Ah, but now this president wants to extend hope and change to this area.  Under the Obama plan, earnings growth in a 529 plan would no longer be tax-free. Instead, earnings would face taxation upon withdrawal, even if the withdrawal is to pay for college.

So what we have is yet another instance of the government changing the rules once people have already committed their money to these plans… to rob the productive and thrifty who have sacrificed for their children's education in order to 'redistribute' this money to those who couldn't be bothered.

When we examine whose money the libertarians are spending, it seems to be ours for the most part, they are mostly from the red welfare states.

1. You might want to add a citation, else you might get called out for plagiarizing.

2. All the articles I read based (which were almost word-for-word what you wrote) their comments on an analysis from Americans for Tax Reform, which is not bipartisan, iirc. That's why I mentioned it as "speculation."

3. Welcome to the Dungeon.

If you read my recent post, above, one of the criticisms of the TN plan is that it covers tuition costs not already paid for by grants and other scholarships. That means that the TN plan pays more for people who are making more (who have a harder time qualifying for Federal and State grants), than it does for those who are poorer (who have an easier time qualifying for Federal and State grant monies).

Call it buying elections or effecting policy change, but yes. The first is the Senate report from last. It all has to do with fuel prices. You did know that the reduction in the price for a barrel of oil WAS hurting the Russians, right?

No,I hadn't realized that the fall in oil prices might have hurt an economy based solely on oil exports. It never, ever occurred to me,I swear

In my case I don't feel it's right to fault the education system.

Isn't there a difference between those who want government to do more and those who want government to do less?

It's OK. Since the Supreme Court decided that corporations are people, anyone who wants to spend money here has a legal right to buy our government. That's what the founding fathers wanted, after all, right?

There's also a difference between those who want the government to work well and those who want to disable it (by making sure existing agencies like the SEC, IRS, and EPA don't do anything.)

At least a lower court has ruled that disclosures of donors making contributions of $1,000.00 or more need to be public information.

Judge Rules Fewer Political Groups Can Keep Their Donors Secret

• A U.S. district court judge awarded a victory to campaign finance reform advocates on Tuesday when she ruled the Federal Election Commission was too loosely enforcing a campaign finance regulation passed in 2007, allowing some big-money donors to remain anonymous.

• Conservative groups that attempted to intervene in the case have voiced their disappointment.

• The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday that over $140 million of the so-called "dark money" was spent in the 2014 election.

• "In recent years, the group Crossroads GPS has spent tens of millions on political ads fueled by anonymous donors. Registering as a political group would have forced the nonprofit to begin naming its big-time benefactors. Crossroads has also become a model for hundreds of other committees that during the last election cycle pumped more than $300 million into the campaign — an estimate that is undoubtedly low because of the lack of disclosure required of these organizations."

The last point is a vindication of the IRS ^^^^ and DomKen. (Any idea where he went?)

what we are missing from the "free" community college conversation are a couple of things very worth noting:

one is, community college is already very inexpensive and can pretty much be afforded by anyone willing to work a part time job while going to school. and for the economically challenged, there is already a tremendous amount of government aid to be had.

the other is, when something is free, you do not value it as much, if at all. when you have to work for something, or pay for it, it has more value and you treat it with more respect.

for many, if not most people, college has become an obligatory extension of high school, a grade 13 if you will. while I believe college educations are wonderful, there are already too many people who, for one reason or another, probably should not be there, or at the very least, would be better off somewhere else.
