Wow. You can't make this shit up.

A 3-year-old boy shot his father and pregnant mother inside a New Mexico motel room, police said Sunday. Both parents are recovering. The Albuquerque Police Department said in a statement that it appears the toddler managed to take a handgun out of his mother’s purse and fire one shot in the America’s Best Value Inn on Saturday afternoon.

The bullet hit the father in the buttock, exited the man’s hip and then struck the toddler’s mother in the shoulder, according to police. The mother, who is eight months pregnant, is hospitalized in stable condition and the father has been treated and released, police added.

Justin Reynolds said he and his girlfriend, Monique Villescas, were getting ready to order pizza when he heard a gun go off. “The next minute I realized my girlfriend was bleeding,” he told NBC News station KOB. “Then I sat down and realized I was shot too.” Reynolds said he immediately called 911 and grabbed towels to try to stop Villescas’ bleeding.

“I just took action right away,” he told KOB. “I was more worried about my girlfriend than myself and anything else that was going on. And my son because I didn’t know if he had shot himself or not. He was shocked and crying. It was traumatizing.” Reynolds added that he was grateful his Villescas’ two-year-old daughter - who had been sitting her to her mother at the time - was not injured.

Funny how you quoted everything in the article, right up to the paragraph that talked about the consequences.

The Albuquerque Police Department said both children have been placed on a 48-hour hold. The case will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office and the parents could face negligence charges, the force added.

So the parents have had their children removed from their custody, at least temporarily, and may face negligence charges. So yes, we have a gun owner acting stupidly, but we're also seeing that they're paying the cost for it.

FYI:

It is not an "accidental discharge" when a weapon fires because the trigger was pulled. Guns are supposed to fire when the trigger is pulled. The early Iver Johnson safety revolvers featured a bar that blocked the hammer until the trigger was almost fully back, a later model had a trigger-actuated safety. Both designs prevented an accidental discharge if the gun was dropped with the hammer down, allowing you to carry a full cylinder safely.

Why is that "funny"? Do you expect ANY quote to include the entire article?

I don't think negligent parents is in dispute here -- until your knee jerking fingers went looking for something to disagree about.

Debate issues, instead of people. You'll get further, accomplish more, and look less perpetually angry over molehills.

So...because there is punishment after the fact that makes it OK? Don't get me wrong I am all for punishment. But the reason for these repetitive posts is an attempt to show these are NOT isolated incidents but are happening every damn day. There is more to it than a few careless parents....BECAUSE there are one hell of a lot more than a few!

If it were not the fear of murder from Mod 3 I could post one of these each day... sometimes more than once a day... But I fear the significance of such posts would be wasted on many here anyway.

Punishing them before the fact would be even worse, "Minority Report" society.
Nobody said it was alright, just that the law already covers this.
What we need is more safety education, not more restrictions.

Sad but so Bama it is a lot more effective to restrict than to educate people that do not want to learn OR CAN"T...If education were to work it already would have... personally i think gun owners... you and me excluded of course...are too damned dumb to even figure out how to put a safety on let alone how to safely use...carry ...and store a weapon.

Which is, in fact, something I called for in another of the endless gun threads.

Part of the problem is the demonizing of guns.
Some people have them who shouldn't have steak knives.
At the same time there is a subculture that tries to stigmatize gun ownership to the point that people don't want any advice.
I would also say that the vast majority of gun owners do know how to handle guns safely. I have known three people who I wouldn't trust around firearms. One I haven't seen in over 40 years. The second has passed away (heart attack). The other one was my first wife who had too much ego to learn anything from anyone. She hasn't been around firearms since our divorce.
All of the others, and I have known a lot of them, are very safe with them.
Have firearms safety classes in school, like drivers ed. Teach them before they get careless.
By the time my son was the age of these children he knew better than to touch a firearm. To look at one he needed to ask. I removed the mystery and taught him safety before he knew he was learning anything, safety was just the way things were.
We need to go back to that.
You are aware, are you not, that firearms accidents are at an all time low?

Naw. Part of the problem is the glorification of guns as the solution that fits every problem.

Yeah, just the other day I had a problem with my truck. It wouldn't start so I pulled out my shotgun and then I was having this problem with my cat. Evey time he shits in the yard the dog gets mad. My trusty magnum solved that. Now the cat uses his litter box. Guns solve all of life's problems

According to the Associated Press a 9 year old in China was plating with a lighter in a public place and started a fire that killed 17 people, I thought they had laws to cover everything.

This, especially as a reply to the quoted post.
"The demonizing of guns",what can anyone do to further that agenda that hasn't already been accomplished by the carnage taking place in our streets and cities.

Actually I think you are too stupid to carry, please hand over your weapon because I.. a totally unrelated person to you that knows nothing about you at all, say so..

THATS what gun control does...

And If gun control worked at all places like Chicago wouldnt have a single gun crime ever, and yet... more people die there where there is a law that you cant even sell a gun in the city was in place until just recently.

I get it kids with guns are bad, its why its a crime, but people committing crimes shouldnt add a restriction on me as a person because someone else will do it. Its like charging me with robbery because another girl commited the same crime.

I will if you will... I would love to see every damn gun in the universe destroyed... If we went back to clubs, knives, and arrows the horror of war would return and maybe we would have a few less of them... Anyway I am good with a bow.... Hell I am even better with a knife.
