Status: offline 		A Member of Mississippi’s House of Representatives declared his opposition to increased funding for his state’s beleaguered schools, saying blacks in his community already receive “welfare crazy checks ” that don’t work, reports the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.

In an interview, State Rep. Gene Alday (R-Walls) said he doesn’t believe additional funding is needed, stating “I don’t see any schools hurting,” before mentioning food stamps and welfare checks received by African-Americans in his hometown.

Faced with Mississippi school superintendents saying they expect to see more than 28 percent of students forced to repeat third grade, educators are seeking additional funding to hire reading coaches and train thousands of elementary and special education teachers.


Under a program instituted by Republican Gov. Phil Bryant, third grade students who fail to reach a certain proficiency level would be held back causing educators to worry about class enrollment levels.

While Jackson Public Schools Superintendent Cedrick Gray described what’s happening now with Mississippi’s upcoming test of third-graders as “a perfect storm,” Alday said more money is not the answer.

Admitting that Mississippi has poor performing school districts, Alday blamed it on voters “electing superintendents that don’t know anything about education.”

The former mayor of Walls continued on saying, “I come from a town where all the blacks are getting food stamps and what I call ‘welfare crazy checks.’ They don’t work.”

According to Alday, he once had to visit an emergency room in Walls for pain, explaining, “I liked to died. I laid in there for hours because they (blacks) were in there being treated for gunshots.”

In an editorial published in the Clarion-Ledger, the paper called for Alday to retire or be defeated at the polls for his “racist” comments.

“Alday is quickly becoming infamous for racist comments he made to investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell for an article about education policy and funding,” Sam Hall of the Clarion-Ledger wrote. “These comments simply aren’t acceptable by any standard, but they are especially worrisome coming from an elected official.”

First of all, despite all of the high drama it is fairly normal to find all kinds of crazies on both sides of the aisle in a House of Representatives at the State House level. In Mississippi’s House of Representatives, there are 122 members, which will obviously include many freshmen right off of the streets. Now multiply that figure by 57 states, and with such a large number of relatively entry level politicians across the nation you are likely to hear literally anything over time

Status: offline 		There is all sorts of crazy shite that goes on in some school districts here in the US.. I know of at least 2 horrific situations here locally.. some of this shite has gone on for many years, and even decades.. pretty fn sad..

Gov. Phil Bryant said superintendents are tossing out a high number because they want to delay third-grade gate. If the real figure is 28 percent, he asked, "Why is it that high?"
He defended third-grade gate as reform that needs to be embraced as something that will help Mississippi, just as it's begun to help Florida.
"This is not just holding children back just to hold a child back," he said. "This is intervention on an individual basis so that a child will be able to read at the (third) grade level when they get promoted to the fourth grade."
