This didnt make many right wing sites, so I will share for those people who are whinging about muslims not standing up against the radicals...

REUTERS - More than 1,000 Muslims formed a human shield around Oslo's synagogue on Saturday, offering symbolic protection for the city's Jewish community and condemning an attack on a synagogue in neighboring Denmark last weekend.

Chanting "No to anti-Semitism, no to Islamophobia," Norway's Muslims formed what they called a ring of peace a week after Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein, a Danish-born son of Palestinian immigrants, killed two people at a synagogue and an event promoting free speech in Copenhagen last weekend.

"Humanity is one and we are here to demonstrate that," Zeeshan Abdullah, one of the protest's organizers told a crowd of Muslim immigrants and ethnic Norwegians who filled the small street around Oslo's only functioning synagogue.

"There are many more peace mongers than warmongers," Abdullah said as organizers and Jewish community leaders stood side by side. "There's still hope for humanity, for peace and love, across religious differences and backgrounds."

Norway's Jewish community is one of Europe's smallest, numbering around 1000, and the Muslim population, which has been growing steadily through immigration, is 150,000 to 200,000. Norway has a population of about 5.2 million.

The debate over immigration in the country came to the forefront in 2011 when Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people and accused the government and the then-ruling Labour party of facilitating Muslim immigration and adulterating pure Norwegian blood.

Support for immigration has been rising steadily since those attacks, however, and an opinion poll late last year found that 77 percent of people thought immigrants made an important contribution to Norwegian society.

I like the idea of it and one can hope that it's indicative of a deeper heart change. I am skeptical though...would be neat to be alive in 100 yrs to trace it's influence.

I know they did this a couple of years ago in Egypt though, around a church, and within weeks the church was burned down. I am not suggesting that's going to happen in Norway, in fact I think it won't.

in terms of Norway being welcoming of muslim immigrants, I suspect Sweden once felt the same way and maybe have lived to regret it.

I think sanity has a point to a larger issue---the next step is for a few million muslims to make a protective ring around Israel. one can hope for the best and prepare for the worst at the same time.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark – More than 1,000 people have formed a "ring of peace" outside Oslo's main synagogue at the initiative of a group of young Muslims.

The event in the Norwegian capital follows a series of attacks against Jews in Europe, including the killing of a Jewish security guard and a Danish film maker by a Muslim gunman in neighboring Denmark last week.

One of the eight independent organizers, Hajrah Arshad said the gathering Saturday shows "that Islam is about love and unity."

Norway's Chief Rabbi Michael Melchior sang the traditional Jewish end of Sabbath song outside the synagogue before the large crowd holding hands.

Co-organizer Hassan Raja said it was the first time he heard the song.

And I replied: "Yeah, we need 1,000,000,000 other Muslims (about one third the world-wide total, according to most sources) to do similar things and we might start to get somewhere."

Speaking of numbers... I dont know where the fault for the discrepancy lies, but lucys article states that there were a thousand Muslims there while the other articles state that there were a thousand people there

when all catholics agree, when jews all agree, when christians , hindus, agree with each other can you realisitically expect only ONE religon to agree.
Human nature sure as shit doesnt work that way, why are you expecting another religion to do exactly what YOU cannot do, or rather WONT do.

As much as I abhor Sanity's right-wing obsessive points of view and that anything he doesn't agree with is "leftist" with prejudice, he does have a point.

You didn't see them rally round after the Charlie Hebdo attack did you?
You didn't see a general collaboration of Islamists protecting many other synagogue's did you?
Out of 1.4 billion Muslims worldwide, there's a token of 1,000 surrounding one synagogue in Oslo.
Not lots of them in major cities elsewhere - just one synagogue, in one city.
That's not any support of masses of Muslims offering symbolic support to the Jews - it's pure paranoia.

It's far too little, far too late, and a token gesture joke.

As I've said several times across several threads, an awful lot of Islamics (of all types) actually support the ideology of what ISIS/AQ/BH et al is enacting.
We in the west see it as terrorism; but it is the fundamental bedrock of Islamic beliefs.
And to my mind, that is precisely why you don't see a general uprising of Islamics against the terrorist groups.
Because to do so would mean to repudiate/denounce certain fundamental aspects of their faith; and to do that openly invites death by their own kind.

This is the biggest problem. Their religion is causing alot of guilt and confusion among them who has to abide by non-muslim countries culture and laws. On one hand, they want to fit in and just be like just the other kids, on the other hand, their religion is telling them that if they do, they are committing sins.

I just don't see how Islamic teachings are compatible with modern lives. It's all these conflicts that causes problems when they have internal dilemma.
