ORIGINAL: CreativeDominant And here they go again: The University of New Hampshire has a "Bias-Free Language Guide" on its website, which "is meant to invite inclusive excellence in [the] campus community." Terms such as "American," "homosexual," "illegal alien," "Caucasian," "mothering," "fathering," and "foreigners," are deemed "problematic." According to the university’s website, the guide “is meant to invite inclusive excellence in [the] campus community.” Terms also considered problematic include: “elders,” “senior citizen,” “overweight,” “speech impediment,” “dumb,” “sexual preference,” “manpower,” “freshmen,” “mailman,” and “chairman,” in addition to many others. Saying “American” to reference Americans is also problematic. The guide encourages the use of the more inclusive substitutes “U.S. citizen” or “Resident of the U.S.” The guide notes that “American” is problematic because it “assumes the U.S. is the only country inside [the continents of North and South America].” (The guide doesn’t address whether or not the terms “Canadians” and “Mexicans” should be abandoned in favor of “Residents of Canada” and “Residents of Mexico,” respectively.) Using the words “rich” or “poor” is also frowned upon. Instead of saying “rich,” the university encourages people to say “person of material wealth.” Rather than saying a person is “poor,” the university encourages its members to substitute “person who lacks advantages that others have” or “low economic status related to a person’s education, occupation and income.” http://www.campusreform.org/?ID=6697 And on...and on...and on... If you go to the actual site, instead of just the "news" reports about it, you'll see this in large letters: "The views expressed in this guide are NOT the policy of the University of New Hampshire. UNH supports free speech on all of our campuses." http://www.unh.edu/inclusive/bias-free-language-guide So no, here we don't go again, other than "reporters" inventing the "news" Of course, it's not their policy...they know they couldn't get away with forbidding the use of those 'problematic" terms...it's only on their website to show you the "free speech" they prefer. Sort of like the University of California with Janet Napolitano in charge: Fifty years after the birth of the free speech movement at the University of California, Berkeley, officials across the UC system are encouraging faculty and students to purge mundane, potentially offensive words and phrases from their vocabularies. Administrators want members of campus to avoid the use of racist and sexist statements, though their notions about what kinds of statements qualify are completely bonkers. “America is a melting pot,” “Why are you so quiet?” and “I believe the most qualified person should get the job,” are all phrases that should raise red flags, according to the UC speech police. Requests for faculty to quit perpetrating these teensiest of microaggressions are thankfully just that—requests—although the fact that they come straight from the desk of UC President Janet Napolitano lends them some muscle. On January 5, Napolitano dispatched letters to UC deans and department chairs inviting them to attend seminars “to foster informed conversation about the best way to build and nurture a productive academic climate.” http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/06/22/the-university-of-california-s-insane-speech-police.html If you can find ANYWHERE in my post where I...or anyone else...states that it is their policy, bring it forth. So, there is no invention of any news...this IS on their website, as a guide. There's nothing I said...or the reporters said...that indicates it is policy, only a guide. It does...indeed...go on.
