do you understand the expression "do you walk to school or carry your lunch?"

No.

smiles...

it means the two things don't have anything to do with each other. almost like "apples and oranges" but better I think.

Well then, I did understand. Ya see, I could not find a connection. LOL

And here they go again:

The University of New Hampshire has a "Bias-Free Language Guide" on its website, which "is meant to invite inclusive excellence in [the] campus community."

Terms such as "American," "homosexual," "illegal alien," "Caucasian," "mothering," "fathering," and "foreigners," are deemed "problematic."
According to the university’s website, the guide “is meant to invite inclusive excellence in [the] campus community.”

Terms also considered problematic include: “elders,” “senior citizen,” “overweight,” “speech impediment,” “dumb,” “sexual preference,” “manpower,” “freshmen,” “mailman,” and “chairman,” in addition to many others.

Saying “American” to reference Americans is also problematic. The guide encourages the use of the more inclusive substitutes “U.S. citizen” or “Resident of the U.S.”

The guide notes that “American” is problematic because it “assumes the U.S. is the only country inside [the continents of North and South America].” (The guide doesn’t address whether or not the terms “Canadians” and “Mexicans” should be abandoned in favor of “Residents of Canada” and “Residents of Mexico,” respectively.)

Using the words “rich” or “poor” is also frowned upon. Instead of saying “rich,” the university encourages people to say “person of material wealth.” Rather than saying a person is “poor,” the university encourages its members to substitute “person who lacks advantages that others have” or “low economic status related to a person’s education, occupation and income.”

bounty44 -> RE: Progressive Education (7/29/2015 4:59:52 PM)

this was a topic of conversation on fox's "the five" earlier this evening.

dana perino said she originally thought it might have been an instance of "fox baiting" but then had to admit that no, that there it is right there in writing.

even the liberal (that means fair and balanced comrades) commentator Julie roginsky roundly criticized it as being stupid.

greg gutfeld called "problematic" the most problematic word in our language and said that its used by people who don't otherwise have the courage to say what they really want to say.

Kimberly guilfoyle called it all "semantic bullying."

It is getting to the point, that it might be easier to make a list of what words you ARE permitted to speak or write in the near future.

Where is this country headed? and will it need a handbasket to get there?

If you go to the actual site, instead of just the "news" reports about it, you'll see this in large letters:

"The views expressed in this guide are NOT the policy of the University of New Hampshire. UNH supports free speech on all of our campuses."

So no, here we don't go again, other than "reporters" inventing the "news"

snipped for brevity and fun

What has followed is a takedown of what a young conservative journalist and his editors regarded as a kind of fiendish political correctness happening at the University of New Hampshire. Of course, the guide at the center of this story is itself intended as a takedown on cultural insensitivity. Wheels within wheels.

Let me explain.

CampusReform.org is an online publication. It deploys a five-person staff and a team of almost 50 paid campus correspondents (students) against what the publication considers the twin scourges of leftist bias and abuse on the nation's college campuses.

CampusReform.org is no ordinary college publication. It's wholly funded by the Leadership Institute, a Virginia-based nonprofit that aims to equip and train young conservative activists, journalists and future candidates, Morton Blackwell, a Reagan White House aide and the institute's founder and president, told me.

Of course, it's not their policy...they know they couldn't get away with forbidding the use of those 'problematic" terms...it's only on their website to show you the "free speech" they prefer.

Sort of like the University of California with Janet Napolitano in charge:

Fifty years after the birth of the free speech movement at the University of California, Berkeley, officials across the UC system are encouraging faculty and students to purge mundane, potentially offensive words and phrases from their vocabularies.

Administrators want members of campus to avoid the use of racist and sexist statements, though their notions about what kinds of statements qualify are completely bonkers. “America is a melting pot,” “Why are you so quiet?” and “I believe the most qualified person should get the job,” are all phrases that should raise red flags, according to the UC speech police.

Requests for faculty to quit perpetrating these teensiest of microaggressions are thankfully just that—requests—although the fact that they come straight from the desk of UC President Janet Napolitano lends them some muscle. On January 5, Napolitano dispatched letters to UC deans and department chairs inviting them to attend seminars “to foster informed conversation about the best way to build and nurture a productive academic climate.”

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/06/22/the-university-of-california-s-insane-speech-police.html

If you can find ANYWHERE in my post where I...or anyone else...states that it is their policy, bring it forth.

So, there is no invention of any news...this IS on their website, as a guide. There's nothing I said...or the reporters said...that indicates it is policy, only a guide.

It does...indeed...go on.

Let me explain.

CD said, The University of New Hampshire has a "Bias-Free Language Guide" on its website, which "is meant to invite inclusive excellence in [the] campus community. That was true at the time, and it's been true since 2013, although it has now been yanked.

The guide, developed by students and staff in 2013, attracted little attention until this week, when it was featured the conservative news site Campus Reform... The guide appears as a resource on a UNH website detailing the university's efforts to create an inclusive, diverse and equitable community. It says is meant to serve as a "starting point" to encourage critical thinking about terms commonly used in conversation and writing... a report submitted by the President's Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities last year describes it as a "4-commission effort." The college also has a commission on women, people of color and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues. The leaders of the four groups did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday. ~U.S. News & World Report

This circus also displays a complete ignorance of how college websites work. In addition to the official pages, separate groups, departments, and even individuals have server space where they post their individual stuff.

Since we're now established it's this group spoofing correctness by silly exaggeration, the entire basis of both the "news" reports, this thread, and poster outrage and/or eye-rolling on it are thoroughly discredited.

Learn your lessons and move on, instead of doubling down on stupidity.

That it is policy? I didn't make that claim.

That it's true, when it isn't? It is...or was...on their website.

Should I be embarrassed that conservative activists brought it to people's attention? I'm not.

Jittery? The only jittery I feel right now is in knowing that they'll be here soon to pick up my vandalized bike.

You pompous, condescending twit.

First...your suggestion that these "instances" of overbearing PC are thought of by Me as examples of policy is you making assumptions. Incorrect ones. When a university has adopted as something as policy, I'll note that. When a university suggests something be followed but as a "guide", I'll note that too. As I did with this post.

As for the thread itself, the first post was about an outrageous homework assignment...not about policies.

You're wrong twice. You might want to think about that next time before YOU overreach and double down on your stupidity.
