Israeli spy chief warned Congress might blow up talks on Iranian nuke program Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to cancel a January briefing for U.S. Senators by his nation’s intelligence service that warned Congress could damage talks aimed at constraining Iran’s nuclear program, according to sources familiar with the events. Tennessee Republican Bob Corker, the head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, had requested the Jan. 19 briefing for six of his colleagues traveling to Israel so that the intelligence agency, Mossad, could warn them that a Senate proposal might inadvertently collapse the talks. After Netanyahu’s office stripped the meeting from the trip schedule, Corker threatened to cut his own Israel trip short in protest. Netanyahu relented after the personal intervention of Israeli ambassador to the U.S., Ron Dermer, and allowed the briefing to go forward, sources say. Attending were Corker, Republican Senators John McCain, Lindsey Graham and John Barrasso, Democratic Senators Tim Kaine and Joe Donnelly, and Independent Senator Angus King. At issue was the fate of a Nov. 2013 agreement between Iran, the U.S. and five other international powers. That temporary agreement promised no new economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for a freeze of Iran’s nuclear program, new international inspections of Iran’s nuclear sites and the removal of nearly all medium-enriched uranium from Iran’s possession. Both sides have stuck to the interim deal while talks on a long-term deal to constrain the Iranian nuclear program have dragged out. The controversial but popular bill proposed by Republican Mark Kirk and Democrat Robert Menendez would have imposed new sanctions on Iran if it didn’t agree by June 30 to a long-term deal. U.S. intelligence officials had concluded that the Kirk-Menendez bill risked collapsing the talks and taking with it the 16-month-old agreement, according to a report by Eli Lake and Josh Rogin of Bloomberg View. Corker wanted the Mossad briefing to bolster the U.S. assessment. During the Mossad briefing, the agency’s chief, Tamir Pardo, warned that the Kirk-Menendez bill would be like “throwing a grenade” into the U.S.-Iran diplomatic process. After some of the contents of the briefing were first reported by Bloomberg View, Pardo released a statement saying he had used the phrase not to oppose new sanctions, but “as a metaphor” to describe the effect derailing current talks might have. A spokesman for Netanyahu declined to say why the Prime Minister acted to prevent the Senators from receiving the briefing from Pardo. Since the Mossad briefing, Corker has rallied support for an alternative measure to replace the Kirk-Menendez proposal, support for which has faded. tweak just opinion but lying is not the word... he has always said that now was not the time for a Palestinian state... and if you read the full interview you would see how his response was arrived at by the reporters questions. We can only hope the people of Israel will come to their senses and realize that there needs to be a change if there is any hope for future peace. I believe Herzog has the right ideas i just hope he has the support. Butch ps... Even if Herzog's party wins, If I were you, I would not expect an instant turn around in policies. The cost of living was a more important issue I understand than the direction of peace with Palestine. But i do believe Herzog will put a stop to new settlements.

I never said he "stole an election" I clearly stated he won the last won but only got 23% of the votes. One thing is certain, the chance of peace in the region will be difficult if he continues with the ethnic cleansing that some call settlements.

VERY true..............their own 'parliament' has stated many times that they want the Israeli state wiped out. And if they decide to do it, the war would be over before and help could or would arrive from any so-called allies

Not really no. I lost a brother to the arabs so I am a little anti and would cheerfully see the so-called Palestinian area turned into a glazed wasteland. The claims are far from outrageous and I am pretty sure you realise it but why bother to argue. Nobody ever won an argument.

The Palestinians really haven't shown a lot of good faith when you come to look at their past practices..................would you prefer that Israel put somebody like that famous british P.M. Neville Camberlain in power ? He could then appease the arabs all the way to a mass grave.

Well, it would certainly seem like he is still Prime Minister, so I would guess that maybe he is considered to be the lesser of a number of evils. I really have no idea though as I have no insight into the Israeli voters minds. I leave that to the experts. Like I said though, better him than a Neville Chamberlain clone or somebody who will pray for peace and rely on outside help when the dill begins to pickle. Help that just may not arrive in time.

Maybe if we were to entice a few Israelis on to these boards, we may get a more accurate feel for how the Israeli population feels about this whole thing, instead of attempting to second guess them from half way across the world by listening to biased radio and TV commentaries and reading biased newspapers ? Maybe they have more brains than to come on here though................they would have the pack howling after their blood and labelling them 'racist', before they had made more than two posts I would guess.

Like me, they would be stuck for a sensible answer given Israel's long history of aggressive territorial aggrandisement, massacres, ethnic cleansing and apartheid.
