Black protesters have likened last month's fatal shooting of 19-year-old Tony Robinson by police officer Matt Kenny to the killings of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Eric Garner in New York City and Dontre Hamilton in Milwaukee. Grand juries in Ferguson and New York, convened by white prosecutors, chose not to charge the officers in those cases. Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm, who is white, declined to file charges in the Hamilton shooting.

But this case is going to be different.

The decision to press charges in the Madison case will be made by Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne, a biracial Democrat who identifies as black. Ozanne, whose mother was an activist in the South during the Freedom Summer of 1964, got his start as an assistant Dane County district attorney in 1998.

Only it's not going to be different.

Demonstrators demanded that Kenny be fired and charged with homicide... Brandi Grayson, a spokeswoman for Young, Gifted and Black, told the city council that the city will "erupt" when the full facts emerge.

What about the biracial prosecutor?

"It doesn't matter. He's a representative of the system and the system is fixed. The laws are written in a way to ensure Matt Kenny won't be indicted."

They are offended by the law.

4) Even if the slight was intended and deliberate, functioning adults understand that they must move on and not dwell over every sideways glance or rude comment.

5) You have to stop doing the trendy internet thing where you write something on a piece of paper and take a picture of yourself holding it up while frowning. It’s just annoying at this point.;

CD, I'm just wondering: have any criticisms of these "maxims" occurred to you, yet?

It's just that, since you copied them out in bold, presumably for our enlightenment here at CM, I'm assuming that you believe them to be perfect - or at least, in their major impact, in their fundamental truthfulness. Is that really the case, for you?

Actually, Peon...I thought most grown up, intelligent people would be able to figure out what each of them meant and how to apply them. If you're having difficulty with that, you might try going back to the original source I cited them from.

I also thought most intelligent people would be able to detect some of the humor that can go along with these as in Kirata's comment. If you're having trouble with that, I don't know what to tell you.

College Apologizes for Serving Mexican Food During Sci-Fi Event

Stevenson College is apologizing to its students for serving Mexican food during “Intergalactic” night. In a letter sent out to students, the college apologized for having “a Mexican food buffet,” while also featuring spaceships and aliens. The college received complaints saying the combination was racist because of the association between Mexicans and illegal immigrants.

“We would never want to make a connection between individuals of Latino heritage or undocumented students and “aliens” and I am so sorry that our College Night appeared to do exactly that,” wrote Carolyn Golz ... After receiving complaints, Dr. Golz said that the event “demonstrated a cultural insensitivity on the part of the program planners and, though it was an unintentional mistake, I recognize that this incident caused harm within our community and negatively impacted students.”

As a result, Dr. Golz “will require cultural competence training for Programs staff, in addition to implementing mechanisms for future program planning that will ensure college programs are culturally sensitive and inclusive” ... Dr. Golz then encourages students to report “hate” to http://reporthate.ucsc.edu/ to cut down on insensitive events like Intergalactic night.

You can't make this shit up.

As a HUGE scifi fan, I would never had made that connection. I will now have to be careful of what I am reading when having tacos or nachos as a snack.

What about eating Doritos while watching The Hunger Games? Are Corn Nuts okay while watching Divergent?

How far do we go in trying not to be racist?

I guess the aliens they had hadn't registered with MIB so they were illegal aliens.

Well, spaghetti and lasagna and the like are off the table, while watching the Godfather (any of the three) and I would avoid fried chicken and watermelon, while watching any Tyler Perry movie.

When I was based in the DC area I knew a black guy who refused to eat fried chicken or watermelon for fear of looking like the stereotype.

I always remember one of those perpetually offended types barging into our group in our local pub in England and berating us for telling religious and Irish jokes. The Rabbi told him to fuck off and the Priest told him he shouldn't be listening to other peoples conversations. The Landlord asked him if he knew any good 'Embarrassed Idiot' jokes ?

Everything you ever wanted to know about Gender-Inclusive Non-Sexist Speech
Gender, Sexuality, & Women's Studies Program, University of Pittsburgh

Here are a few strategies to keep in mind when meeting regularly with a group of people for a class or event: If you are not sure what name or pronoun someone uses, ask! Respect a person’s identity by calling them by the name and pronouns that they use.
[image]local://upfiles/235229/F777F2B9D5C94CC791DF6916376DC2F7.jpg[/image]

Some examples follow at the link, but don't think you're home free if you learn just them.

Some genders include masculine, feminine, genderqueer (queer, fluid, or non-binary gender identity), agender (neutral or non-existent gender identity and/or expression), cisgender (gender identity and/or expression that is “cis,” or “on the same side as,” assigned sex category), and transgender (any gender identity or expression that differs from sex assignment). Trans refers to a range of non-cisgender identities, including transgender and transsexual.

It's complicated, and that's not all. It's also very important to stay up to date...

Keep in mind that a person’s gender identity may change over time. Be open to changes in gender pronouns.

So you better stay sharp! The Guidelines do not have the force of policy, but they are generously forgiving of social pressures against people who are, you know, "rude".

No one is ordering you to use this language. However, some people are asking you to be considerate of their wishes and sensibilities. In short, it's merely politeness -- politeness is about consideration for other people. You are free to not use this language... but then most people would probably think you are rude. Isn't it nice to have a little guidance about how to be considerate and polite?

Yes, isn't it nice?

So that's a "no" then.

Fair enough!

You know I can be pedantic. I believe the name of the book was: "To Serve Man" which is why the translators first thought the aliens were benevolent.

Asian dragons became extinct because an hour after you eat Chinese you're hungry again and even with all that food they starved to death.

Staying on the food theme:

Allow your staff to not do something that offends them and instead anger your customers OR move your staff to another area where they'll not have to worry about doing something that offends them and your customers won't be angered or inconvenienced?

Seems simple, right? Most employers would pick the second choice, right? Not these folks...

I don't have a problem with their refusing to sell to certain customers as long as they don't have a problem with shop owners firing them because they are unable to do their job, which is selling to customers or not hiring them in the first place. If a job requires heavy lifting, no one has a problem with the employee asking ahead of time if you can lift heavy objects. In this case they would need to ask if the prospective employee has a problem selling pork or alcohol. If they do then they don't get the job anymore than the guy who can't pick up more than 20 lbs would have.
