Get thee to a haberdashery, preferably with a friend who has a concept of style and will tell you the truth. [;)]

He looks like a tool, in my not so humble opinion.

LOL

I kind of agree. But I feel like it's because the hat doesn't fit him. His face needs to be bigger. And his shirt needs to be a stronger, more decisive color. The hat can't be the thing that gives a man presence. And I feel like in this picture, it's a man trying too hard. Ergo - a tool.

But the hat? Sure. :)

Exactly. Hats are weird creatures-- certain people can pull certain styles off beautifully, while the same hat on someone else can look well...like that photo. LOL

I live in Britain, littleladybug, and all my friends are British. Do you have any other advice?

littleladybug -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/17/2015 5:29:24 PM)

Ok...any hat stores around? People working in those places usually have a passion for what they do, and have a sense of style when it comes to headwear.

ETA: What I'm trying to say is that I don't think you're going to get something fabulous unless you actually try stuff on.

shiftyw -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/17/2015 6:06:39 PM)

I do not know if they ship to the UK- but my dad and brother love this place- every hat my dad has bought from there has looked great. Whenever he wears them he gets compliments and I personally think they make him look 10 years younger.

If anything it should be good for ideas.

shiftyw -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/17/2015 6:07:58 PM)

OH. his personal favorite is the "Gatsby" style- he can't pull off fedoras.

Gauge -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/17/2015 6:11:37 PM)

Hats are like glasses for most folks, you will look great in one and like a twat in another. Get out, try some on, preferably if there is a specialty shop around you... this way you can rely on their experience and get one that is right for you.

It looks like he's wearing an umbrella. *arches a brow @ Peon's response* You could always get a gatsy and a really bad drawl so you could pass as a newspaper lad rather than gangster. [:D]
I like tophats but depends on the style, only works with steampunk for me.

MercTech -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/17/2015 6:35:00 PM)

I use a greek fisherman's cap to cover my "helmet head" when I get off the motorcycle.

Now, in sunny or inclement weather; I'll get out my five inch brim cavalier hat.

....bloody page coding won't let me attach photos tonight.... grrrr...

TNDommeK -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/17/2015 6:44:53 PM)

I have no idea the style of hats other than fedoras, oh and those hats like Samuel L Jackson wears...Kangos I think?
Anyway, I love hats on a man. Very nice.
Oh Oh Oh, I dont think this counts as a hat, but those beenie thingies that brad pit wears, I love those. MMMMM

MercTech -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/17/2015 6:48:14 PM)

Oh *we* have style. [8D] Try a selection on, take pictures, post them here, and you get LOTS of truthful opinions. [;)] [:D]

Driving caps, I believe.

And oh yes, I love them too.

yassss!

Kaliko -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/17/2015 7:14:19 PM)

I used to have one, back when I was younger and trying to be all adorable devil-may-care Punky Brewster-ish.

igor2003 -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/17/2015 8:26:56 PM)

Here is a site where you can virtually try on different styles of hats. You take a picture of yourself (or use your web cam) and load it to the site. If this is the same site I visited about a year ago, you then adjust the size of your picture to fit an onscreen guide. Then just click on different styles of hats to see how they look on your picture! I decided I didn't look good in any of them, but it was interesting to see how they looked.

MariaB -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/18/2015 2:09:46 AM)

Steve is really into hats and has 2 trilbies, an original leather flying hat, a bowler (which he only wears for fet clubs) and a French beret which is my favourite.

Speaking of hats, a stall holder at the BBB asked if she could borrow my ladies dressage top hat for the afternoon. I forgot to get it back and although I've tried to contact her she never answers my email. People have told me she wears it all the time. I wouldn't mind but that was a £200 hat and has a lot of sentimental value :(

NookieNotes -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/18/2015 2:41:29 AM)

Hats are a very personal thing. Most people can pull off hats, but which hats is critically dependent on two things:

1. face shape/proportion
2. attitude

I love hats, and have a nice collection, from wild to mild, new and vintage. Men look awesome in hats when they relax into them, and wear them in the same way they wear shoes, or a belt, like a part of them, not an "accessory" that has to be fussed with.

*squeeeeeee*

Okay, for me, this just became a hat porn thread. (Yes, I have a hat fetish. Watching old movies is yummy because...back then guys knew how to wear yummy hats! Yes, I know I'm babbling.)
