Fedoras are a classic, but you're right that they have started to garner a bit of "worn by twats" reputation in some circles. I'd go for a short-brimmed trilby instead. Same kind of effect without the unfortunate connotations. Black only. Anything else is an abomination against all that is good and holy.
If you want to go down the studied eccentricity route, there's also the option of a topper. Short only, not a drainpipe. The stage magician look is charming and gives you an air of devil-may-care. However, you also run the strong risk of looking like a goth and/or member of the Levellers.
I can't remember where you're from. If you're from Manchester upwards, a flat cap is a safe choice and not even that out of the ordinary. If you're southern, it will look too obviously affected and you get an endless stream of jokes about whippets.
Pork pie hats are probably my personal favourite. They're reasonably easy to pull of and they're a little bit jazz, a little bit rude boy, a little bit man about town. They're also uncommon enough to be noticable, but not so much that it'll be considered strange
Hats to avoid:
Panamas. This is possible to do well, but it's best left as an exercise to the experienced hat wearer. It's vital you get the whole ensemble right, moreso than with most other hats.
Flying helmets. Unless you have a planned career as a Roy Chubby Brown impersonator, these are not an option.
