Hats are a very personal thing. Most people can pull off hats, but which hats is critically dependent on two things:

1. face shape/proportion
2. attitude

I love hats, and have a nice collection, from wild to mild, new and vintage. Men look awesome in hats when they relax into them, and wear them in the same way they wear shoes, or a belt, like a part of them, not an "accessory" that has to be fussed with.

You look great. I especially like the middle one. I wore a huge hat for Ascot once. It was so big I had trouble getting through a door!.

You could also try a large saddler shop. Gents have to wear hats for showing horses, and not just your standard riding hat, so you may also find something that suits there, or at least close, that won't break the bank.

it is a milliner that makes/sells hats. You could try a hat hire shop to see what they have as far styles go, and then ask if they could order one for you to buy.

Any male hat fans here? What would you recommend? W

Fedoras are a classic, but you're right that they have started to garner a bit of "worn by twats" reputation in some circles. I'd go for a short-brimmed trilby instead. Same kind of effect without the unfortunate connotations. Black only. Anything else is an abomination against all that is good and holy.

If you want to go down the studied eccentricity route, there's also the option of a topper. Short only, not a drainpipe. The stage magician look is charming and gives you an air of devil-may-care. However, you also run the strong risk of looking like a goth and/or member of the Levellers.

I can't remember where you're from. If you're from Manchester upwards, a flat cap is a safe choice and not even that out of the ordinary. If you're southern, it will look too obviously affected and you get an endless stream of jokes about whippets.

Pork pie hats are probably my personal favourite. They're reasonably easy to pull of and they're a little bit jazz, a little bit rude boy, a little bit man about town. They're also uncommon enough to be noticable, but not so much that it'll be considered strange

Hats to avoid:

Panamas. This is possible to do well, but it's best left as an exercise to the experienced hat wearer. It's vital you get the whole ensemble right, moreso than with most other hats.

Flying helmets. Unless you have a planned career as a Roy Chubby Brown impersonator, these are not an option.

pgashlie -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/18/2015 4:17:06 AM)

Many definitions limit "milliner" to a ladies' hat maker.
Gentlemen would go to .. a hatter. :-)

The problem is, that he's wearing the hat, without a jacket. Very poor style and, as has been colourfully noted, it makes him look silly.

Thanks! I love my hats. They are unique and show off sides of me that I can rarely express as easily as with a hat.

MariaB -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/18/2015 6:15:34 AM)

I agree Nookie and like you I love my hats. The French make some fantastic bohemian type hats for day wear but like everything French, they are very expensive! Fet wise I have a collection of burlesque style hats. My favourite is a short top hat with an abundance of crow feathers.

Peon, you have to get a pork pie hat :)

I have to disagree on the Panama. The fedora is for winter and cold climate wear. The panama is the default for summer... especially in New Orleans muggy heat.

Someone mentioned a Trilby... I always associate those but Lou Costello (Abbott & Costello) and the comic use of a too small brim on a large fellow for comic effect. You have to be skinny to pull it off without looking like a pin-head. i.e. the gambling addict in the program "Scorpion"

BTW, classically, a hat has a brim all the way around. If it doesn't have a 360 degree brim' it is a "cap" and for working class and children.

Hat sizes are the measurement of the circumference of the head divided by 3 and done to the nearest 1/8th. For the most part, hats that come on "small, medium, large, X-Large" are "souvenirs". <grin>
Most people fall in the range of 6-1/2 to 7-3/4 in hat sizes. It is hard to find hats outside that range.
I ended up with a leather cavalier hat because I told the barker at the renfaire "Yeah buddy, if you have a hat to fit my 8-1/4 head; I'll buy it." I find a large 5 inch brim hat wonderful in the rain and bright sun.

Oh yes, I love these! You have great eyes (very bright) and honestly I think any hat would work on you. I prefer the "cowgirl" hats personally or blinged out baseball hats (don't laugh but I do sell the latter). I think maybe hats reflect personality. Yours is pretty, flowery and confident. (I wonder if this means mine is cold and icey, LOL)

ARIES83 -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/18/2015 9:12:44 AM)

Wow Merc, I thought I had it bad with a 7 2/3" noggin. Is that you in the photo?

There are several hats that do not work on me. Cloques make my face look round and puffy... I love cowgirl hats. Just bought a pink one. Baseball hats are fun, when I'm out being sporty.

I like this type of hat ... but I don't think it looks good on him.

I think hats are unique to the individual ....

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/18/2015 4:54:02 PM)

I reckon that looks good peon. I used to wear one of those at times in London..................usually if it was snowing or pissing with rain. But yep, that looks good

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/18/2015 4:56:48 PM)

you could always wear it with a leather jacket and carry a bullwhip and call yourself Louisiana Prendergast or something

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/18/2015 5:11:56 PM)

Or just Louise, for short ?

I've only got 5 hats nowadays, but I've always felt it was all about the hat.
