I wish I could wear a hat!! i have really thick and curly hair..I put a hat on and it squishes down the top and pushes the bottom out sideways... I can wear hoods...that is it. Good thing I am not British.

Got to say, I have never been a fan of men wearing hats though...except Indiana Jones

He looks like a tool, in my not so humble opinion.

He cannot carry off that hat.

Hats for men are great if they have that swagger.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/18/2015 11:08:41 PM)

Have a look on google at Akubra hats peon.................if you see any you like, I'll be happy to get one to you in July. They were originally made by Stetson and then became their own brand. I dunno whether you could carry them off real well in UK though unless you managed to adopt an aussie twang.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/18/2015 11:17:07 PM)

Oh yes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I DO know that those who MAKE hats are called Hatters (surprise) hence the name for Luton Town Football Club. Luton was the centre of the hatting industry at one time. That's why they are all nuts there...............Mad as Hatters.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/18/2015 11:40:52 PM)

There is a hat shop in Bath if you can get there peon................The British Hatter. They will be happy to help you out.

Dang, I can't find a picture of a co-worker you reminded me of.
Ok, picture heavy dreadlocks piled on top of the head and bobby pins holding a hard hat to the hair. Her hard hat is about a foot and a hallf above her skull. But, she has on the hard hat required by OSHA.

Hats are a very personal thing. Most people can pull off hats, but which hats is critically dependent on two things:

1. face shape/proportion
2. attitude

I love hats, and have a nice collection, from wild to mild, new and vintage. Men look awesome in hats when they relax into them, and wear them in the same way they wear shoes, or a belt, like a part of them, not an "accessory" that has to be fussed with.

OMG Nookie ... you look beautiful !!!

I too love hats .....

On men and women ....

Thanks!

I do not know if they ship to the UK- but my dad and brother love this place- every hat my dad has bought from there has looked great. Whenever he wears them he gets compliments and I personally think they make him look 10 years younger.

If anything it should be good for ideas.

It *is* good for ideas - thank you, Shifty. In fact, a hat - wholly appropriately called a 'good boy', stuck out for me. A green trilby/fedora. I think that's what I'm going to go for.

Peon, you have to get a pork pie hat :)

Nup. I don't want to look like a mod/skin, Maria. I want something of a good brim.

I shall indeed try that, Dvr. Thanks. There's also a hatter's in St Nick's Market here in Bristols, so I've heard.

PeonForHer -> RE: Hats for Blokes (3/19/2015 4:45:46 PM)

Nookie,

Yup. Hats look great, to me, on women. I nearly always look twice at a woman wearing one. It's (pretty nearly literally) the icing on the cake as far as her appearance goes. Horny. I'm surprised, in a way, that women haven't started a thread on hats for themselves here (so far as I recall) - I'd have thought it was an obvious one.

Funny, really, that it took me this long to think of the equivalent item of attire for males. But, then, I don't often think of males' appearance. Well, except mine, natch. ;-)

Too big a brim for me, Dvr, also, I don't want to take the 'cowboy' route. Well, mind you - a Drizabone for the rain - a lot more useful than a brolly ....

You could also try a large saddler shop. Gents have to wear hats for showing horses, and not just your standard riding hat, so you may also find something that suits there, or at least close, that won't break the bank.

it is a milliner that makes/sells hats. You could try a hat hire shop to see what they have as far styles go, and then ask if they could order one for you to buy.

needles

A saddler's is worth considering, needles, but, strangely (considering this is the UK) they seem to be thin on the ground. The ones I remember seeing in the past have focused solely on riders' hats - caps and bowlers (derbys) - not my thing.

I always associate bowlers with the bully-boys hired by richies - the sorts who wear toppers, in fact. I don't suppose there's much of such associations left any more, given that mens' hats have gone so far out of fashion - but there's still a ghost of it around.

Any male hat fans here? What would you recommend? W

Fedoras are a classic, but you're right that they have started to garner a bit of "worn by twats" reputation in some circles. I'd go for a short-brimmed trilby instead. Same kind of effect without the unfortunate connotations. Black only. Anything else is an abomination against all that is good and holy.

If you want to go down the studied eccentricity route, there's also the option of a topper. Short only, not a drainpipe. The stage magician look is charming and gives you an air of devil-may-care. However, you also run the strong risk of looking like a goth and/or member of the Levellers.

I can't remember where you're from. If you're from Manchester upwards, a flat cap is a safe choice and not even that out of the ordinary. If you're southern, it will look too obviously affected and you get an endless stream of jokes about whippets.

Pork pie hats are probably my personal favourite. They're reasonably easy to pull of and they're a little bit jazz, a little bit rude boy, a little bit man about town. They're also uncommon enough to be noticable, but not so much that it'll be considered strange

Hats to avoid:

Panamas. This is possible to do well, but it's best left as an exercise to the experienced hat wearer. It's vital you get the whole ensemble right, moreso than with most other hats.

Flying helmets. Unless you have a planned career as a Roy Chubby Brown impersonator, these are not an option.

I might go for a Panama in the summer, Apocalypso. I've been reading about them: amongst the most super-expensive hats in the world, if made the traditional way. I'm balking at a fedora because of that 'twat' connotation - but I have to say I do like the look of them. Apparently there are things called 'fedora-trilbies) which look like trilbies but with bigger brims. That's more my thing, I think.

I can't get my brain around the idea of a black hat with a brown jacket. Does that work? What about a dark grey - a charcoal?

That is indeed tasteful. Actually, I think I'd go for that rather than a Panama.

It looks like he's wearing an umbrella. *arches a brow @ Peon's response* You could always get a gatsy and a really bad drawl so you could pass as a newspaper lad rather than gangster. [:D]
I like tophats but depends on the style, only works with steampunk for me.

It does look a bit big, doesn't it?

I can do the drawl. Well, a Sheer Khan type drawl. And, nup, you can be sure that I'm never going to get a top hat. I can only do a couple of magic tricks.

I love seeing men and women in hats. I know when I wear a hat, it's amazing the people that interact with me, and the conversations that start just because of my headwear.

I love a man with a sense of style. It does not have to be perfect, just "him." In fact, imperfect is better, when that imperfection reflects who is is authentically.

Yes, mixing foundation colors can work. If YOU have the right attitude.
