Real: "genuine", "true", "actual", "authentic", and "verifiable" also: "legitimate", "bona fide", "licit", "valid", "tangible", "corporeal", "palpable", "heartfelt", "sincere", "trustworthy", "honest", "loyal", "genuine"and "essential" . That's what the American Century Thesaurus says - and the reasons the words are in quotes is because people's definitions of any of those will probably vary (acc. to specific examples from anyone's own life, would be my guess). Of the words listed in this definition, my favorites are: Sincere, trustworthy, corporeal, verifiable, and genuine. I need more time to think of specific examples re: How I know when a person is any of these things (I'll be back later). This is a great topic. - Susan
