We always here Dominants and submissives asking for or stating that they are "real" and we all chortle a bit, making jokes, snickering because of course WE are all real---

I have at once been called not real and then have someone amazed how real I am---

what does real mean to Y/you?

Actively participating in some fashion (even if that fashion is seeking someone with whom to engage in S/m and/or D/s) ... and not just 'thinking' about it or fantazing about it.

Real is as real does.  My momma always used to say, 'Forest, if you weren't real it wouldn't hurt you so bad to stub your toe when you get up in the middle of the night to take a piss.' Momma always said things like that.

I don't understand how so many 'grown' people can lose  their fuckin' minds out here. It does prove that the mind is a fertile field.  It also shows that most people are unable to drive the tractor and aim the plow.

If anybody is stupid enough to read my profile and belive it is the word of God, or take everything  I ever say as law or as me in whole and in part....they need to put tinfoil  on their head  so we know who they are.

All people are commonly known to put their best  foot  forward to make a good impression.  While this may possibly be some indication at their core of who they are, I have heard that Ted Bundy was a hell of an engaging fellow as well.

Some out here whip their minds into such a frenzy, with such unrealistic expectations that you couldn't get anything approaching it by an act of congress and the sacrifice of 16 vestal virgins.

Of course there are those men who claim to be your worst nightmare (and when met, it turns out that that is indeed true, by the sheer dint of the fact that the farts they let at night would stink  a maggot  off a gutwagon).

There are also the obiedient slave women out there who feel so deeply that when you say, 'good morning' they fall apart and go, boo hoo hoo, what does that mean?  Why did you say that?  boo hoo hoo.  I just can't take it anymore...boo hoo hoo.

Reality is somewhat less, most times.  It seems like everyone is going to play musical chairs and at the first sign of dischord, head for the rhubarb.....there is no learning process or willingness to seek accord.........the want it now syndrome.

I would have said that to be a real peson you need a drivers licence, a passport be on the electoral role (For Aussies anyway) and to pay tax.. There is an arguable point that if you do not appear on the electoral role you do not exist and thus need not pay tax. (this is a matter of contention and untill some one tales the ATO aka Australian Tax Office to the High Court to chllange this we'll never know). Ok am I real?
  • Drivers Licence? YES.
  • Passport? Not an Australian one at the moment so NO.
  • On the Electeral Role? NO.
  • Pay Tax? YES
I'm buggered if I know if I am real or even exist at the moment..

i usually try to run from people who have the need to state over and over about how "real" they are.  it's the same as the guy at work who always feels the need to tell you what an honest person he is.  then *i* feel the immediate need to lock my purse in my desk and hide my money up my holiest of holys.
i get sick of hearing from "natural doms" too.  what the heck is a natural dom?  and what is an unnatural one?
as if anyone is ever going to come to you and say "I am a fake dom."  "I am dishonest."
so these end up being catch words that either mean absolutely nothing, or mean the person who just said it is a suspect liar.

Would you accept someone telling you "Take everything I say with a grain of salt and examine it under the microscope" rather than them saying "I am dishonost" ?

Real: "genuine", "true", "actual", "authentic", and "verifiable"
also: "legitimate", "bona fide", "licit", "valid", "tangible", "corporeal",
"palpable", "heartfelt", "sincere", "trustworthy", "honest", "loyal", "genuine"and "essential" .

That's what the American Century Thesaurus says - and the reasons the words are in quotes is because people's definitions of any of those will probably vary (acc. to specific examples from anyone's own life, would be my guess).

Of the words listed in this definition, my favorites are: Sincere, trustworthy, corporeal, verifiable, and  genuine. I need more time to think of specific examples re: How I know when a person is any of these things (I'll be back later).
This is a great topic.

To me, "real" means that I've met you in person, face-to-face. The person is more than a voice on the telephone and words on a computer screen to me.

It has nothing to do with the whole "true whatever" issue -- it's an issue of moving from quantum existence to physical existence. I wish there were another word for it, since "real" for me in every other area encompasses such a broad range of possibilities -- but it is the thing that, for now, separates the people that I only know from their words on a page from the people that I've actually touched... at least to shake their hands.

One state isn't "better" than the other, except that it takes a "real" person to attend to the things we need to have attended to -- printed words on a computer screen won't wash the dishes, or attend to the plants on the patio.

Well I dont know for sure what makes someone REAL in the ever popular BDSM sense ...
I always getting feeling I am in fact a mere kinky tourist in most peoples eyes after all I am not 24/7 (dont wanna be) a Switch (yes it says Domme) a costume freak,  too young,  the list goes on ...
So I am getting the feeling that what ever I am not is in fact "Real"

To me, you are a completely amazing Quantum Person... I've never had the pleasure of contact with your biobody suit, but I would say that, at least on a quantum and philosophical level, you certainly do exist...

what does real mean to Y/you?

What a wonderful topic for discussion.

I used to have a journal entry on the other side that said something along the lines of "Real" and "True" are subjective terms that can change from one person to the next.  In order for them to have any real meaning then the parties involved have to agree on the definitions, otherwise it's all just smoke and mirrors.

I try to eschew using either of those terms in a BDSM context, actually.  I long ago learned that two people can say the exact same thing and have entirely different movies playing in their head at the time.  I also learned that what is your definition of these words today is likely to change over time and experience, so as a validation and qualifier it's moot.

I am, however, guilty of seeing someone else use either of the terms and then struggling to not assume they are a novice.

Perhaps real means that you are:
  1. Not a figment of your immagination,
  2. An empty fart in the dunny.
  3. A bodiless voice singing under the shower.....
