Gun goes off in Altoona church during Easter Vigil mass

Police say a man accidentally shot himself in his hand at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament

http://www.wtae.com/news/gun-goes-off-in-altoona-church-during-mass/32202174

My theory: It was a public service.

The Vigil is a long liturgy, and the guy wanted to make sure everyone was awake for the drive home.

Police say a man had a gun in his pocket and it discharged when he stood up. The bullet grazed the man's hand. An Altoona newspaper reported the trigger caught on the man's pants and the gun's safety was not on.

I'm having trouble seeing that.

Possibly the hammer? On a revolver (which might not have a safety)?

I could see a hammer, getting caught on someone's pants, causing an accidental dis-charge.

That's kind of like the gun went off when I was cleaning it.

I can't see that one either.

I can't see that either unless the barrel would be pointed up. He would have to be pulling it out for that to be the case. The only way I could see what Kirata posted is if there was another object or objects in his pocket that pushed on the trigger when he stood up and his pants tightened up.....er maybe......with the safety off of course.

Welcome to modern day Christian churches....

On a more serious note; its a good thing the injury was not more serious. There is a reason why one keeps a firearm in a holster rather than in their pocket.

Yeah really. You'd think they'd know better than to hold their shooting contests inside the Church. It only takes one person to get the schedule mixed up, and look what can happen.

How does one carry a gun in a pocket anyway? I thought they were much too heavy to do that for any real length of time.

It's the angels and cherubs you've got to watch out for. You never know when they're going to turn up on a Sunday in a pissy mood after fights with their wives.

This is just one example of a derringer without a trigger guard and low weight (9.5 oz)

All handguns that I am familiar with that lack a trigger guard are single action. Thus just putting pressure on the trigger wouldn't do it, unless he carried it cocked, in which case he was an accident waiting to happen.

Could be but still, those are all single-action. Snagging the trigger wouldn't do anything unless it was cocked.

I used to carry a .45 automatic in my hip pocket, only problem I ever had with it was that I had to carry a empty wallet in that pocket for when I sat down.
