According to THIS study heavy users of pot loose about 18% of their long-term memory and have difficulties problem solving because of physical changes in the brain. Some believe this study may slow the march of legalization in the US.

I have brought this phenomenon up before as a personal observation of friends that I knew were heavy users of pot in their youth.... even worse when they continued use into adulthood. My observations were shot down on these boards as not having any proof... Well now I do.

So I know most here are pot heads...and this explains a lot...[:D] I just hope you stop and save a few brain cells for your old age.

anybody who has seen somebody high know instinctively that person isn't acting themselves. If you listen to the proponents of legalize marijuana, you would think it is completely harmless.

Well alcohol is here to stay and there is nothing we can do about it... sooooo.... for our KIDS sake lets legalize ANOTHER drug that can destroy their brains... because...because... duh... I want to get high too...sheeeesh. As if alcohol is not enough. This is a dumb ass argument... see pot does fuck up brains...[:D]

Marijuana is far from harmless. Regular use cause more damage to the brain, even than what can be seen for one alcoholic that also is a smoker on a NMR scan.
If one take what part of the brain that is affected in account the problem is even worse.
Those who advocate to legalize marijuana have no scientific facts for their claim, but the opposite.

@ChrchofDrk: Incorrect, alcohol by itself do less brain damage than pot, it is only when combined with the smoking of tobacco the damage can get comparable.

There's actually one drug that is comparative benign, psilocybin, and one of the very few that actually can heal the brain under certain condition when used right. Meaning very small amount of a fraction of a gram.

Cannabis-related episodic memory deficits and hippocampal morphological differences in healthy individuals and schizophrenia subjects

ABSTRACT
Cannabis use has been associated with episodic memory (EM) impairments and abnormal hippocampus morphology among both healthy individuals and schizophrenia subjects. Considering the hippocampus' role in EM, research is needed to evaluate the relationship between cannabis-related hippocampal morphology and EM among healthy and clinical groups. We examined differences in hippocampus morphology between control and schizophrenia subjects with and without a past (not current) cannabis use disorder (CUD). Subjects group-matched on demographics included 44 healthy controls (CON), 10 subjects with a CUD history (CON-CUD), 28 schizophrenia subjects with no history of substance use disorders (SCZ), and 15 schizophrenia subjects with a CUD history (SCZ-CUD). Large-deformation, high-dimensional brain mapping with MRI produced surface-based representations of the hippocampus that were compared across all four groups and correlated with EM and CUD history. Surface maps of the hippocampus were generated to visualize morphological differences. CON-CUD and SCZ-CUD were characterized by distinct cannabis-related hippocampal shape differences and parametric deficits in EM performance. Shape differences observed in CON-CUD were associated with poorer EM performance, while shape differences observed in SCZ-CUD were associated with a longer duration of CUD and shorter duration of CUD remission. A past history of CUD may be associated with notable differences in hippocampal morphology and EM impairments among adults with and without schizophrenia. Although the results may be compatible with a causal hypothesis, we must consider that the observed cannabis-related shape differences in the hippocampus could also be explained as biomarkers of a neurobiological susceptibility to poor memory or the effects of cannabis. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

There are unquestionably medicinal benefits to marijuana for many, but like any other substance which can be abused, more is not always better or more effective. There are serious side effects to prescription medication which require another prescription or two to treat unwanted or debilitating side effects themselves.

It takes maturity and a thorough knowledge of oneself and individual tolerance levels, whether one has an addictive personality, is prone to excess, is prone to being in denial about one's limits, no matter what activity one engages in. Being, in a safe, controlled environment is important, around people you can trust to look out for you if need be.

This study focuses on teenagers. Anybody whose brain is still forming shouldn't be messing around with mood-altering and mind-altering substances from the getgo.
If you're on prescription medications such as MAO inhibitors, you should never be mixing them with alcohol or any substance which will intensify, nullify, or destabilize their intended effect and throw your system out of whack.

Some people can't handle their drink. Low tolerance for alcohol. Some who've smoked pot have said it just makes them sleepy and pass out; obviously, those persons should never get behind the wheel of an automobile while impaired to any degree.

Now, in my own case, I tend to have high tolerance levels for most things, but I know better than to overdo anything either. There are gambling addictions and sex addictions which are far more ruinous, compounded by substance abuse and alcoholism.

There were a couple periods in my life when I was a pothead. It did enhance my creativity, but perhaps not my overall judgment in terms of prioritizing and dealing with reality.
I notice that in men, especially, it tends to make them more passive and not motivated to function well in everyday life. If somebody is already laidback and mellow, pot would just be wasted on them. Other personalities who are more on the control freak end of the spectrum, need to chill the f--- out to make their stress levels manageable, but that can be achieved naturally through meditation or self-hypnosis, or by taking up an exercise regimen, disciplining oneself via martial arts, etc.

I will admit, though, that I've experienced some of the best sex while I was high. [;)] (In a safe, controlled environment with a trusted mate) Yeah, those were the days.

And according to some other study, heavy drinkers of bleach lose about 100% of their long-term memory and have difficulties problem solving because of physical changes in the brain. Some believe these studies may slow the march of bleach legalization in the US.
Oh wait, memory loss and problem-solving aren't the main criteria deciding which substances are legal and which aren't! So even if something kills your entire long-term memory instantly on contact, it shouldn't necessarily become contraband. Any 10 year old with a couple bucks can buy a jug of bleach in any market in the country. That's enough to wipe the long-term memories (and kill completely) quite a lot of people.

There's this really cool concept we humans figured out a few thousand years ago, I guess you haven't heard it. It says that the illegitimate use or something doesn't negate its other uses. Just because you can (possibly) find proof that pot causes memory loss doesn't mean we should continue the failed war on drugs, which is really a crime against all of us, and fills prisons with non-violent people for profit.

But you may not have smoked enough weed to be able to understand me. Your logic skills are probably not much better than your spelling and grammar. Have another drink.

Forty-four healthy controls, ten subjects with a past “cannabis use disorder” (CUD), 28 schizophrenia subjects with no history of substance use disorders, and 15 schizophrenia subjects with a CUD history was there sample size...

Forgive me, but I take most "research" into pot with a grain of salt; the last study this institution did they didn't control for other substances such as alcohol (a known neurotoxin...). I don't even smoke pot; However, I look at all the grief and sorrow this country has gone through over prohibiting it, and I have to ask myself "why?"
