Dear Master and if there also Mistresses:
Does the BDSM community recognize that a slave can be educated with a BA or Master degree and come from  a good family with manners, what I mean is that what is the perception of you as Masters about a slave? Do you see a slave as dumb or looser or as an individual that can have an education, success and still be a servant, love discipline and want to serve and forced to obey and live a life full of servitude instead of working in a big corporation. Are slaves like that out there? What is the typical type of slave you encounter here in collarme or in alt or in a chat?
thank you.

The sub(s)/slave(s) a Dom/me keeps is a reflection of the Dom/me.

Why would I want a loser?

On the other hand, lack of formal education hardly makes the person a lesser being.

I am a slave and I come from a family of high manners,  who are all educated, my father in fact wrote a text book and we have traveled all over as he is often asked to speak.  I have had dinner in one of the world's highest rated restaurants and this type of thing has been common for me all through life, so even though I am no Master or Mistress, I can answer your question. Yes, slaves can and are often educated with manners.

JC:

My slave is very educated and has craft skills as well.  I am finding that most people I am meeting in this lifestyle are very educated, and tend to have a lot of knowledge and respect.  If they do not show respect regardless if they are sub or Dom, I won't engage conversation with them.

Respectfully,

Mistress_Jan

I have a BA in anthropology and I want to move on to get a PhD.  I am a submissive and my Dominant is supportive of this.

I know many well educated and cultured submissives and slaves.  A very good friend of mine has her PHD, she knows more about vinoculture (hell, I can't even spell it  LOL) than anyone else I know. I would not want a Master that did not find intelligence (not necessarily education) and good manners necessary in his submissive or slave.

I find it a personal irritant that we have to point these facts out so frequently.  It seems to be assumptive that most slaves and submissives are on the lower end of the education/intelligence continuum.   This is not to say that your post does this.  I just frequently see posts saying "I am intelligent, cultured, not-a-doormat" as if this precludes them from being a submissive or a slave, or at the very least, puts them in the higher echelon, making them more elite or something.  In fact many of us are that way and find little need to point it out so frequently..  <end rant>

edited to say this was directed to the OP, not janiceleeinsc...

I know slaves who are attorneys, physicians, psychologists, teachers, chefs, owners of businesses and high-level managers of technical companies.  Look at Master Jim and slave marsha as an example.  My closest friend is at the top of a Fortune 500 company, leading a staff of 20 scattered across the country, and yet her days and nights are filled with unparalleled service to her Mistress.  When I finish my degree and people call me "Doctor", will I be any less a slave?

The call to be a slave or submissive affects people in all professions.  My education allows me to serve better, with greater confidence and resources than if I weren't educated, though I would note that the presence of good manners transcends education (many people without advanced education have impeccable manners, just as many with degrees are complete boors).

Certainly there are "slaves like that out there."  I can't imagine no longer finding security in service simply because I have a professional degree.

Having an education doesn't guarantee that you still won't be dumb or a loser. But as to the question, intelligence is actually an asset to being a slave. Having a formal education on the other hand is neither a help or hindrance in my opinion.

I don't think that having a degree necessarily makes you smart, any more than not having one makes you dumb.  I have met both,  those with a PhD, and those with a GED.  There are dumbasses and smartasses on both sides of the fence.

Whether one is a sub/slave doesn't have anything to do with how many years of school they have had, nor how much money they can/do make.  It has to do with the need they have in their hearts to serve.

We happen to value intelligence and creativity in a slave.  Does this always require a college degree?  No, it doesn't (we have run into people with a lot of book sense, yet lacked common sense). However, if we are with someone who is going to school we are very supportive of them in their endeavours.

I have a masters degree and I like Collarme a lot. I think lots of very intelligent people post here.

While I dont really label myself, I have sub dom and slave all combined within me. If  asked to say what kind of people post here, I would say,  "mostly educated, at a pretty high level". Just my gut response.

I am certainly not a Master, but would like to address your post

If you look around here, or attend a munch ot two, you will see a wide variety of educational levels of slaves/submissives. You will also find a wide variety of intelligence levels, having nothing to do with schooling.

I haven't met this guy yet, and hope I never run into him.

I don't want to be *forced* into anything, let alone obeying. I obey becasue I choose to, not because anyone forces me.  I also do not want to come to love discipline, if what you mean by that term is having to be disciplined for bad behavior. It's something I avoid in my relationships.
I have an education, I work for a big corporation, that has never been a deterent to my relationships. *I* have been able to live a life of servitude and maintain my job. That is just how *I* have done it, YMMV.

Sure there are, there are all kinds out here.  Some are like that, some are not.

We are each unique and individual human beings. I don't think there is a typical type any more here, than there is in vanilla.

Sometimes we even post in the Ask a Master Forum.

There is no typical slave in respect to education or accomplishments, in that I find they vary as much as any other cross section of society.   As Caretaker said, a slave is simply someone with a desire for owned service.  I've known some that were as dumb as a box of rocks and some that were very intelligent.  I've known some that were completely without talent and some that were amazingly talented and creative people.  What individual owners may require is really just that, individual preferences.  I think among the few common requirements, one would be obedient service.  So yes, there are slave's like what you describe.  In fact, there are slaves of just about every kind you can imagine, and the same can be said of owners as well I think.

On the other hand, a formal education at great expense at the finest institutions in the land can actually produce a lesser being.

Take, for example, the person who lost both the popular and electoral college votes in the 2000 election and somehow wound up as the President Of The United States anyway.

Go figure.

p.s. A great book on this subject is "The Bush Dyslexicon," although the author's name escapes me at the moment.

I like a slave with intelligence and an enquiring mind. Education does not guarantee that. If she has a formal education it just means that perhaps she may be able to give me a good debate on some academic areas or she may have expertise in areas in which I am interested in...There is one school of thought I have heard that many women who are academics seem to display more submissive qualities than say girls working in factories where they need to be tougher.. I find this to be inconclusive and would like to see a broarder based and larger vurvey

A few things:   To the OP, I hope by now you realize that slaves come in all varieties of education and intelligence (and there is a significant difference between education and intelligence) as do Masters.  No one familiar with the D/s world would think that slave = less educated.  Period.

Indeed, if you as proDommes about their clientele (and I have several pros I consider good friends) you will find that by and large submissives are more educated, and more intelligent, than the "average" population.  Anectdotal information, but valid none the less.

Sinergy said:

and went on to use the example of the current POTUS.

I don't think that formal education produces a LESSER being; I just don't think that it will always elevate a lesser person.  Surely, Sinergy, you've heard the term "garbage in, garbage out"?  It is true of the raw material of academe, as much as in programming.
