And Republican Presidential Candidates breathe a deep sigh of relief.

Nikki Haley to call for removal of Confederate flag

https://www.yahoo.com/politics/nikki-haley-calls-for-removal-of-confederate-flag-122182725721.html

Do you agree with the decision?

lovmuffin -> RE: South Carolina to Pull Confederate Flag (6/22/2015 4:57:52 PM)

Stupid controversy, 1) the stars and bars was a battle flag and not the flag of the confederacy 2) the original style flag is square, not retangular 3) the KKK idiots use the retangular version and that is as close to actual racism it gets 4) if some white liberal race baiting asshole hadn't come up with the perpetual offensiveness of it, it wouldn't be an issue 5) the battle flag in SC is over a Civil War memorial, not over the capital building.

I don't particularly like the KKK and Snotzi idiots using it as a symbol of their hate but I think it would be a whole lot more fun if blacks started displaying it (the original square version), especially groups like the black panthers or street gangs. That would really piss off the racist idiots. The idiots would be dumbfounded. The namby pamby offensiveness bullshit just gives the racist idiots something to get a rise out of all you offended types.

Suppose it were to become some a little more than 'namby pamby offensiveness', lovmuffin? It's not as if interracial violence hasn't exploded in a major way many times before in the US, after all.

I mean, not accusing your good self personally, but I get the feeling that there's a sort of smug, know-it-all,self-satisfied vibe of 'Oh, that's just people being Politically Correct and *pretending* to be offended - when, in fact, it's actually people beginning to approach boiling point.

HunterCA -> RE: South Carolina to Pull Confederate Flag (6/22/2015 5:30:49 PM)

I tell you what, let's all not be smug know-it-alls and leave South Carolna alone to deal with their culture amongst themselves. Like you guys have to do something. I think the race relationships in the south are way ahead of the north. Go fuck with Detroit, Baltimore and New York City. Charleston is doing fine without you.

Actually, I think you'll find that the original saltire banner was rectangular. Use of a square version was approved because of shortages of materials, but the rectangular banner was still flown, most notably by the Army of Tennessee and as the Confederate Navy Jack.

Well don't get your shorts in a bunch. They seem to think so and they pretty much don't want your advise. The south is much less racist than the north. Take your concerns there.

All this over a flag.

I don't think any flag except for the American one and the State one, should be flown at any state capitol. The Confederate flag is the symbol of the South and to strip them of their history/symbolism because of this shooting, is not going to help any type of racial relations IMO. I see no problem with having it at Courthouses, or schools or any other Southern place. Besides, I fondly remember the Dukes Of Hazzard with their car the General Lee from my childhood. Racisim is alive and well everywhere in America, not just the South, so to hot button them is inappropriate.

Sure racial violence has exploded before and way back in the day rightly so. It had nothing to do with the flag though I'll admit that some started flying it after racial discrimination and segregation were eliminated by law. Most of those who are offended including those who are approaching a boiling point have been conditioned over the years by race baiters and liberals looking for things to be offended about for political gain, pretty much the same as all the issues on the Perpetually Offended thread.

Smug, know it all, maybe. Self-satisfied, no. Back in the day when I was growing up (I was born in GA but grew up mostly in a northern state) I used to wear a necktie that belonged to my dad (he grew up in GA). It had 2 crossed confederate battle flags on it. I wore it to school at times when school groups would dress up for various occasions. A lot of people thought it was way kewl. No one was offended nor did they know they were supposed to be offended. Back then I didn't have a clue it would become a racist symbol to people whose minds are full of mush or adopted by idiot hate groups. No one else did either. I'd like to see some high school kid try wearing something like that to school now.

Yep, sure enough, you're correct as usual. Ya made me go look it up๐Ÿ˜Ž Not only that but there were other battle flags they used also including ones with a circle of white stars and one with only one star. Both of those were on a solid blue background.

JVoV -> RE: South Carolina to Pull Confederate Flag (6/22/2015 7:06:50 PM)

I don't see racism in the Confederate flag. I see history.

Then again, I went to Robert E Lee Middle School, so wtf do I know.

Awe yes, The Dukes Of Hazard, good catch. Freakin offensive show with that offensive car๐Ÿ˜Ž

Here's my two cents. And may I preference it by saying my family fought for the south and I've seen family letters and such from the time. I'm pretty familiar with the southern view point and extremely sensitive to it in the states rights vs central federal government domination thing.

The flag means one thing to some people and another thing to others. For decendents of slaves, the only thing that mattered about the civil war was the slavery issue. As Nikki Haley said in her speech today, the State Buildings are for all the people of the state. To those who see it as an icon of oppression, I'm also sympathetic. So, put the thing is a museum and let people hate it or be thrilled by it as they wish. That's what museums are for. An example would be the hollicaust museum. Few people are thrilled by it but we shouldn't forget the events or the significance of the events. The flag can do that in a museum. But...I'm staying out of the vote because in my mind, this is an issue for the people of SC to deal with and I won't be stupid and tell them how they must behave. This vote thing is a sick thing.

JVoV -> RE: South Carolina to Pull Confederate Flag (6/22/2015 8:37:52 PM)

I think having streets & schools named after Confederate 'heroes' is more troubling than the flag flying at a memorial.

Remember that all of those confederate heroes who were southern generals were honorable men who went to West Point with, and we're class mates of, the northern generals and made the hardest decission ofbtheir lives to leave and serve their state. It was tragic, but they were no less mento honor.

One way to degrade and insult people is to dismiss their legitimate grievance.

Nothing new.......

You got the memo......

Walmart however, did not....

"Walmart Becomes The First Store To Remove All Confederate Flag Merchandise"

Ya know honey....you are not required to participate in the discussion and don`t be surprised if the rest of the world moves on without you.

I have neither benefited nor lacked benefit by it being flown in this instance and so its removal means nothing to me. By the same token I am not surprised the herd is threatened by a piece of cloth that represents a struggle for that state's freedom rather than somehow representing a crazy man with a gun and that somehow removing it will make people safer. But I see a pattern. Remove a symbol of that state's fight for its freedom and removal of free men's ability to fight for their freedom with gun legislation. Yes it is good the herd does move in a predictable direction for only then can one move with assurance in the other direction.
