After all, if the entire reason for Britain to go to war with Germany was over Belgium, then if Germany could be persuaded to withdraw from Belgium and other territories they occupied, wouldn't that have been a satisfactory concession to end the war? Why wouldn't that have been enough to satisfy the Western Allies? If wasn't enough, then it calls into question the original pretexts for fighting the war in the first place.

The ultimate given to Germany was: "withdraw from Belgium, otherwise we are at war".

These negotiations had been going on for weeks. The Germans even suggested to the British Government: "well, what about we only pass through a small part of Belgium?"

It wasn't going to happen of course, because the whole German war plan depended on marching through Belgium.

Oh, and I'd add that when the French wanted to chase the Germans all the way back to Berlin, the British said no because the job had been done (according to the British anyway, which was the Germans being pushed out of Belgium and France and accepting that in an armistice).

In the US we don't bail out other States.

In Germany that is a concept going back almost to its founding.

We need to keep one thing in mind. There is a very different legal system in Europe.
Comparing the US and Europe makes almost no sense because of that.

just noticed this thanks to joether

actually germany has a history of being bailed out by other countries since it's funding, it happened 7 times, they just don't feel like reciprocating, and if greece had pennsylvania's economy they would be as twice as indebitated

maybe it should be added that germany is and has been the greatest net contributor to the eu budget for decades - so there is annual reciprocating and no discussions about it

when you are speculating on the difference between bond's interest it's no more reciprocating it's just having your own public expenditure making a longer trip, than you should tell me what are we reciprocating for since we never defoulted.

Seems to me that this really isn't any different in that 'sphere of influence' seems to be directing foreign policy and alliances are being built on a much bigger scale and with potentially far more destructive consequences.

This isn't simply Britain, France and Russia lining up against Germany and Austria-Hungary; this is the whole world getting involved in political games and history would suggest that it won't end well.

This is a very pertinent point that todays politicians seem to be overlooking.

As for reasons the UK want out, it isnt so much we are against a bigger government, more that we wish to control our own laws, taxes etc. The EU Superstate, is creeping up on us using stealth and isnt democratic. At least when our own poiliticaians cock up, we can vote them out at the next election. Immigration isnt an issue per se, as historically it has always taken place. The current problems are a combination of two things. Firstly the vastly increased numbers getting into the UK, and secindly a lack of investment in the infrastructure needed to cope, education housing and health etc.
