We call our military the "Armed Forces". There should be a reason for that.

I believe that to be the unanimous view of everyone currently participating in this thread.

Military Personnel of all branches give up certain "rights" when they join. We can be sent to prison for things that we all believe are so stupid. Most were handled non-judicially following Article 15 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Things like getting a bad sunburn, cutting your hair to short or long, etc. I like BamaD lived in the military where wives were just an unnecessary luxury. They weren't issued and had no rights. The service member could be punished for the acts of their family. Yet we served our country a higher moral purpose. Not until 9/11 were our families were considered a quasi essential part of the military community. Hats off to the them.

Now military recruiters are being encouraged to wear civilian clothes while on duty.

Not sure where you got your info. I checked the stars and stripes, military.com and popularmilitary.com. saw nothing that says this. It would be a bad idea. Off duty yes, on no

Thank you, both of you. Comments like that really do mean a lot to me. I do think I have it so much better these days than say, for example, a spouse of 20-30 years ago. My contribution (such as it is) does get recognized a lot more than I think it used to be. It's a lot different now when they used to say 'the military didn't issue you a spouse so you don't need one,' to 'thank you for part you play in this'.

I won't try to kid anyone. We're five weeks away from that magical twenty year mark. I'm looking forward to the last time we'll do a major move across the country. I've probably bored MP to tears about how I'm never going to want to see another moving box after that. Four major moves (the retirement one will make five) in just around ten years? Yeah, I'm done. LOL.

When the NSA thing happened? I got called something like twenty minutes after it hit the news. They don't mess around with that stuff anymore.

But, for active duty folks, I've somewhat resigned myself to that being the world we live in. I really don't think we're ever going back to pre 9/11 days. Maybe I'm just a pessimist but I just don't see it.

I am not so sure I agree with you completely. I see the term "dependapotomouses" thrown around a lot on some military boards. I have also noticed some hate and anger towards military wives and girlfriends. (I have not noticed the animosity towards the males in those positions.)

Those are throwbacks to an earlier era. Most likely those guys who thought you should live eat and breath the service 24/7. When I was in we called those guys brown shoes, because they were still living in the days when the Air Force still wore brown shoes as part of the uniform.

That would display either fear or a lack of pride in their uniform, neither is good for a recruiter.

More bad news.
A sailor wounded at the Navy Operational Support Center (the 2nd target) has passed away bringing the total to 5.

More bad news.

And some good news...

Gov. Fallin authorizes officials to arm full-time military personnel at certain facilities

OKLAHOMA CITY – In response to the attack on Marines in Tennessee, Gov. Mary Fallin has authorized Oklahoma military officials to arm full-time personnel at facilities similar to the ones that were attacked on Thursday... “Four unarmed Marines were killed in what appears to be a domestic terrorist attack,” Gov. Fallin said. “It is painful enough when we lose members of our armed forces when they are sent in harm’s way, but it is unfathomable that they should be vulnerable for attack in our own communities" ...The personnel may be armed with weapons that “adequately provide for security of the facilities and their occupants.” Those facilities include military recruiting offices.

More to follow, one may hope.

K.

Just a damn shame. Probably a terrorist act, but it seems the media is being careful not to say so just yet.

At least the gunman is dead.

This is the seventh attack n the last. . . 6 years. . . I think it is. Death toll is something like 35 with over 50 injured. I think that there is a pattern.

...They were all shot with firearms that were easy to obtain.....

Only if the military follows through and allows it.
But we can hope.

Two things.

A TERRORISM IS OUTSIDE NORMAL GUN CONTROL SITUATIONS.

B THIS IS NOT A GUN THREAD - DON'T TRY TO MAKE IT ONE.

I just saw where the shooter was hired by a Nuke power plant in Ohio, but was let go before given because he failed a drug test. Fortunately he hadn't been given critical information or access to secure areas first. This could have been so much worse.
