JVoV -> RE: 'Only Black Lives Matter' Rioters Shut Sanders Down (8/9/2015 2:39:31 PM)

The article did, in fact, give a motive to the interruption.

quote:

"If you care about Black Lives Matter, as you say you do, you will hold Bernie Sanders specifically accountable for his actions," Johnson continued.

She mentioned a similar interruption by Black Lives Matter activists during the annual progressive NetRoots Nation gathering. Protestors flooded the stage early on in the event and shouted down Democratic presidential hopeful Martin O'Malley as well as Sanders.

"Bernie, you were confronted at NetRoots at by black women," Johnson said before adding, "you have yet to put out a criminal justice reform package like O’Malley did."

I don't doubt that Bernie is the best candidate to push for legal reforms, but, and I think this is true of all candidates, let's see some plans. Don't just give us the rhetoric, show us a real proposal so that we can see that our priorities are reflected in your campaign.

I think people are too smart to fall for another "Hope & Change" campaign when it's more "I HOPE he has a plan".

The Sanders platform is not the point. The point is he was denied his freedom of speech.

JVoV -> RE: 'Only Black Lives Matter' Rioters Shut Sanders Down (8/9/2015 3:24:32 PM)

The First Amendment only applies to the protections from government action.

As individuals, we do not owe any freedom of speech to anyone. I don't have to let Mormon missionaries into my home to preach to me, and that neither interferes with their freedoms of religion or speech.

Of course, in this situation, any removal of the protesters would have been followed with charges in the media about interfering with their freedom of speech. We know this.

I applaud Bernie for taking the high road. If he has any hope of getting the Democratic nomination, and ultimately winning the election, he is going to need to address the issue of providing an unbiased legal system.

Kaliko -> RE: 'Only Black Lives Matter' Rioters Shut Sanders Down (8/9/2015 3:31:39 PM)

Also interesting to note is that Bernie Sanders was an invited guest to this rally on social security and medicare. There were a number of guest speakers that were going to be appearing - he was giving the keynote speech. I'm seeing a lot of chatter about how Bernie should have handled himself differently (though I have to wonder .... how? Should he have pushed them off stage? Yelled back at them?) But really, it wasn't his event and so, rightfully, it wasn't his call. He stepped aside and let the organizers (I presume) handle it, as he should have.

JVoV -> RE: 'Only Black Lives Matter' Rioters Shut Sanders Down (8/9/2015 3:41:13 PM)

It could have been handled better, but not without looking staged.

As far as I can tell, Bernie is pro-equality on all fronts. If he could have come out, shaken the protesters hand, and offered any sort of a plan to address her concerns, even in a vague way, it would show this.

I hope that he's better prepared for the next interruption, because it will likely happen.

If this sort of thing is allowed it puts an end to political discussion. No body will be able to speak in public.

This group couldn't care less about his concerns. They shouted him down totally ignoring thing ha had to say. They have their own agenda and listening to others is not part of it.

Well, yeah, I did read that part about them saying he has yet to put out a criminal justice reform package, but it still doesn't explain why they were so personally angry at Sanders or why they felt the need to drive him off the podium. The article also didn't verify if they really were part of the organization Black Lives Matter and whether their actions were approved and sanctioned by that organization. So, there's still a lot of holes in this story that need to be explained.

Yea right... do you remember your brethren shouting down Democrats with Heil Hitler trying to explain Healthcare at town-hall meetings? Little difference to me...all are assholes.

Do you remember me saying that was ok? Because if you do your memory is shot.

Btw, the rules of decorum are different at a town meeting than at a public speech.

kdsub -> RE: 'Only Black Lives Matter' Rioters Shut Sanders Down (8/9/2015 5:28:35 PM)

[:D].... you are right... but it is a little ironic when many opposed to the actions of the protesters are just fine with shouting down those they oppose...its different then you know.

So much for favourin liberals....i bet none of the repubs get harangued. They wont even be let close to a stage.
I remember code pink protestors being dragged out of town halls and other eventt meetings.
Yet they wrapped themselves around the donald, unti the 6th......
By the way? Where are all the teaparty wingnuts this cycle?

Really, how many of those people are on here?
The right isn't monolithic you know. We are made up of individuals.
As I said earlier, it wasn't what Sanders had to say that I care about, it was his freedom to say it.
Good as it may make you feel to pretend that I supported people who seem to have agreed with me on one issue when they did something wrong, I didn't.
Saying these people are ok because some one else may have gotten away with something similar is once again invoking the OJ rule.

Thanks, Kirata, this article you linked gives a bit more information:

quote:

In a statement to CNN after the event, Seattle's Black Lives Matter chapter said it protested the event because "the problem with Sanders, and with white Seattle progressives in general, is that they are utterly and totally useless (when not outright harmful) in terms of the fight for Black lives."

The statement added: "White progressive Seattle and Bernie Sanders cannot call themselves liberals while they participate in the racist system that claims Black lives."

It seems that the protest was directed against "white Seattle progressives in general," although if it's a local problem in Seattle, I can't see how they would hold Sanders personally responsible for that. Sanders is from Vermont, not Seattle. I don't know if white progressives in Seattle are useless - or if they're considered any worse than white conservatives in Seattle. The whole thing seems rather ludicrous all the way around.

They all share the unforgivable taint of whiteness and are therefore de facto "white supremacists" (same link).

Yes, I was trying to find information on "white supremacist liberalism" which the protesters made reference to. I eventually found this piece which observed that Black Twitter is not happy with Black Lives Matter.

quote:

It turns out, the price to be paid for Bernie making himself available to the public is activists focusing their rage on the candidate who agrees with them the most.

Once again, allow me to make it 100% perfectly clear that I support the goals of BlackLivesMatter. However, their strategy is falling off the rails.

It's an open question as to whether the people who disrupted the Sanders event last night were actually part of BlackLivesMatter, or just randos pretending to be part of it. Either way, this simple fact remains: the actual BlackLivesMatter activists have not disrupted a single Hillary event. Nor have they disrupted any GOP events, even though there have been dozens of them.

The excuses that people make for this fact are pathetic. "Well, the GOP aren't going to listen to us anyway!" Really? Well, they have full control of Congress and over 30 state legislatures. So, if your strategy is to annoy the people who agree with you, you are not aiming very high.

As for Hillary, I don't need to explain to anyone that Hillary has a much worse record on civil rights and black issues than Bernie. Do your own homework. It's no secret that I support Bernie, but I will support whoever the nominee is. But for god's sake, at least have informed opinions about shit.

Bernie's events are open to the public. Hillary's are not. So Bernie is being punished for this? But seriously, what is stopping BLM activists from finding Hillary? She literally has a parade of reporters chasing her to all her private events. It's not like her schedule is classified information or something.

I am not going to seriously entertain any conspiracy theories about BLM activists being Hillary plants. But I don't blame anyone for thinking that, based on how BLM's current tactics. Hillary is loving this. I mean, think about it. A multi-millionaire white, former first lady gets to watch as people fantasize about the old socialist Jew being the real racist.

If Hillary were ever to make a public appearance her secret service detail wouldn't let the OBLM agitators anywhere near her

They're attacking the softer targets, playing the part of school yard bullies
