Given such things as the USA being so powerful and having so much of an impact on the rest of the world, when Americans vote, how much - if at all - is there a sense that they're voting not just for the USA's best interests, but for the world's? What are your feelings and perceptions?

My opinion as (another) non-American and having lived most of my life in a country right next to the US and seeing how the US govt ruthlessly handles trade agreements/negotiations/disputes.. why would you expect the voters of America to consider the interests of the rest of the world when the US govt doesnt?

Yes, the US is (for now) a powerful country and can crush the economy of other countries and businesses in those countries, which is how they have forced almost the entire world to send the US govt/IRS banking info on Americans (including dual citizens that dont even know they are "American"), including countries where it is against the law to divulge such info on their account holders.. I am specifically referring to the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, aka FATCA.. The US has only one interest and that is in itself (meaning big US businesses/corps), taxing its sheeple/citizens/residents and the rest of the world be damned..

My perception, though, has been that Americans tend to keep themselves much better informed, and indeed generally educated about international affairs, than the citizens of other countries, precisely because they feel the weight of responsibility that they have as a result of their government having such an influence on the world stage. Is this other people's feeling, too?

Which leftists are you thinking of here, Sanity?

The insane freak ones, Peon.

ISIS have demonstrated themselves to be ultra reactionary, authoritarian, fundamentalist religious zealots. That's not the usual profile of groups that lefties of any sort support.

Hardly explains why, when I start a thread detailing ISIS atrocities, those angry little leftist troll friends of yours waste no time piling on ME

really? not the Americans I have met.. perhaps you meet more high flyer American types (those few Americans that have passports).. or those whose children/family are in the military and serving overseas.. whose lives depend on what the US govt does in those countries..

Perhaps so. However, can you show me where a "leftist" has supported and approved of ISIS, as I previously asked?

The link doesn't go anywhere, Sanity. It just repeats a section of this thread. So, again, can you show me where a "leftist" has supported and approved of ISIS?

I think the truth is that you can't show me where a "leftist" has supported and approved of ISIS because no such support or approval, from a "leftist", exists, outside of your imagination. You don't know what a left-winger is and don't understand the first thing about what makes him or her tick, do you, Sanity? You assume that whatever you like, a lefty must by definition dislike, and vice versa. That's about it, isn't it? May I gently suggest that you are as mad as a mongoose?

So sorry to be the one to have to break this to you peon, but you are a moron. And while I can provide you with links and I can explain things to you, I cannot understand them for you.

Then please do provide those links and explain as best you can, Sanity. You will have my full attention and I will try my very best to open my admittedly restricted mind to your wisdom.

Thank you for the implicit compliment, DC. Unfortunately, though, my torso is not matched by my personality or lack thereof. :-(

You're welcome. And editors don't pass out compliments lightly.

Give yourself more credit! Your posts here show plenty of personality: wit, perception, charm, brains. And that's just with the hugely limited medium of type on a gray (or grey) screen. There must be someone on the sceptr'd isle with the good sense to appreciate that.

ETA: Then again, y'all eat Marmite, so there's no accounting for cultural tastes.
