ORIGINAL: kdsub See... a gun free zone!!! If all the kids and teachers had AK's things would have been different... MORE guns not LESS... MORE MORE MORE Better yet lets start arming kindergartners so by the time they reach college they could have gun battles and be safe!! That is after we get rid of that damn common core crap. Butch You know I didn't say that. Self defense free zones are magnets for nutcases like this and studies show that there is a consistantly lower number of victims if someone can fight back. As oppossed to trying to hide and hoping he shoots somebody else. Security guards, or qualified armed teachers could have helped more than anything else. Note I said qualified, not that they should have passed guns out at the door like you pretended I meant. Also remember that Oregon has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation. Which studies are those? Name of the study, author(s), publication information. Your would have disorganized teachers, with firearms, trying to contain if not directly counter-attack an active shooting? In which those teachers do not know if there is only one hostile tango. Nor how that tango is armed or motivations. Maybe they have a bomb? Not hard to create one. Your going to burying the ones that die in the ensuing conflict, right? In the 'live action' studies in which there was one or more active 'shooters'; the defenders lost EVERY TIME they tried to mount a resistance with firearms. In most of the cases, none of the attackers were injured or killed. But when people run away, they are more likely to survive the encounter. I say we should perform more studies like those to. Because to REALLY navigate a building complex requires tactics, people power and intel. Three things a teacher with a 1911 does not have going for them. Have you ever confronted someone trying to kill you? Its not an easy task to overcome. The body dumps chemicals into the system (i.e. adrenaline.) Medically speaking, those chemicals from the 'fight or flight' of the human brain pull blood from the hands and feet inward. Making aiming with a firearm difficult. Law enforcement are not only trained but drilled weekly on handling such a stressful moment. Its not like riding a bicycle. That without practice, these skills deteriorate at a rapid rate. The reason why its called a 'surprise attack', Mr. I-dont-know-squad-tactics, is when the defenders are not ready for such an attack and the attackers are! Even if the defenders had one or more people with firearms, they could have been among the first eliminated. Not hard on a campus that size to find all the security guards in one place at one time. BAM, BAM, BAM, they are all dead. Now the shooter has access to....MORE GUNS. While many a male in college might play Call of Duty or running around as Snake right now; not many of them have the courage to use an actual firearm to confront such an attacker. You might be a deadshot BamaD in your CoD life; but reality is...much...much...MUCH...different.
