JVoV -> Umpqua mass shooting (10/1/2015 11:54:46 AM)

At least 10 dead in a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon. No word on the shooter yet.

joether -> RE: Umpqua mass shooting (10/1/2015 11:57:41 AM)

By someone with easy access to a firearm apparently.

Self defense free zone for sure. And we don't know how he got his weapon so you might want to hold off on blaming gun laws.

kdsub -> RE: Umpqua mass shooting (10/1/2015 12:03:44 PM)

See... a gun free zone!!! If all the kids and teachers had AK's things would have been different... MORE guns not LESS... MORE MORE MORE

Better yet lets start arming kindergartners so by the time they reach college they could have gun battles and be safe!!

That is after we get rid of that damn common core crap.

Butch

No, the media has not reported very much beyond: 10 people killed and 20 others injured at a college in Oregon. Maybe you can provide us with....EVIDENCE....?

You know? They stuff you tend to lack in EVERY FUCKING DISCUSSION when firearms are involved?

All I am stating is a logistical thought process. If the person didn't have easy access to a firearm, most likely they could not have carried out this shooting. That firearms are easy to obtain in this country make my argument all the easier to make.

Now we can 'reset' the clock for the next mass shooting in 3-4 weeks....(because us Americans cant have an adult conversation about firearms like rational adults would on any subject).

You know I didn't say that. Self defense free zones are magnets for nutcases like this and studies show that there is a consistantly lower number of victims if someone can fight back. As oppossed to trying to hide and hoping he shoots somebody else. Security guards, or qualified armed teachers could have helped more than anything else. Note I said qualified, not that they should have passed guns out at the door like you pretended I meant. Also remember that Oregon has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation.

kdsub -> RE: Umpqua mass shooting (10/1/2015 12:16:40 PM)

Not starting another gun thread...but really bama do you believe arming children and teachers is the answer? By the way I did not even see your post before I posted mine...but I knew what you would say anyway.

You don't know how he got the gun. That is what I said and you admit it. For all we know he stole it from a national guard armory, I doubt it but we don't know. You are, as always, asumming you know what happened even while admitting there are no facts avaliable. I guess it is your superior wisdom at play again.

You say this in spite of three facts.
A I said qualified teachers, not any and all teachers.
B I did not say anything about arming children.
C Community Colleges are not attended by children.

My preference would be security guards.
What we have here is hoping they shoot somebody else.

kdsub -> RE: Umpqua mass shooting (10/1/2015 12:31:19 PM)

Like hell they are not... is 18 and 19 grown to you... should we have pistol packing mama teachers... with guns on the desk at the ready... what dumb ass bull crap bama... How many of these damn gun nuts must we read about before something is done about this stupid gun happy society?

More guns are not working... I want a society where carrying a gun with my children is not needed.

Which studies are those? Name of the study, author(s), publication information.

Your would have disorganized teachers, with firearms, trying to contain if not directly counter-attack an active shooting? In which those teachers do not know if there is only one hostile tango. Nor how that tango is armed or motivations. Maybe they have a bomb? Not hard to create one.

Your going to burying the ones that die in the ensuing conflict, right?

In the 'live action' studies in which there was one or more active 'shooters'; the defenders lost EVERY TIME they tried to mount a resistance with firearms. In most of the cases, none of the attackers were injured or killed. But when people run away, they are more likely to survive the encounter. I say we should perform more studies like those to.

Because to REALLY navigate a building complex requires tactics, people power and intel. Three things a teacher with a 1911 does not have going for them. Have you ever confronted someone trying to kill you? Its not an easy task to overcome. The body dumps chemicals into the system (i.e. adrenaline.) Medically speaking, those chemicals from the 'fight or flight' of the human brain pull blood from the hands and feet inward. Making aiming with a firearm difficult. Law enforcement are not only trained but drilled weekly on handling such a stressful moment. Its not like riding a bicycle. That without practice, these skills deteriorate at a rapid rate.

The reason why its called a 'surprise attack', Mr. I-dont-know-squad-tactics, is when the defenders are not ready for such an attack and the attackers are! Even if the defenders had one or more people with firearms, they could have been among the first eliminated. Not hard on a campus that size to find all the security guards in one place at one time. BAM, BAM, BAM, they are all dead. Now the shooter has access to....MORE GUNS.

While many a male in college might play Call of Duty or running around as Snake right now; not many of them have the courage to use an actual firearm to confront such an attacker. You might be a deadshot BamaD in your CoD life; but reality is...much...much...MUCH...different.

Yeah,I noticed that too,but was too dumbfounded to post anything but "BullShit!"

It'd be like me saying that California is the most gun friendly state.

These are not facts, they are possibilities.

A. Even a weekend warrior would have problems dealing with an active shooting location. You would have a teacher race out to attack the possible opposition with no clue of what is going on? What they are walking into? Rather than hold position and wait for reinforcements?

B. Yet they are being armed in America. Never heard of Columbine? Sandy Hook? In fact, many pro-2nd amendment folks gift firearms to their teenagers as birthday presents. An we are not talking simple .22 rifles either! Doesn't take much to covert an AK from semi-auto to full either....

C. Actually most universities and colleges have an active child day care on the premises. Its quite the norm. Particularly on colleges that have degree programs for education, medical, business, and sciences. I do not know if this particular college has one. The college's website is down. 'Can't' imagine why....

My preference would be ACTUAL police officers. Because police officers, unlike security guards are required to have training and be tested often. Likewise, they have firearms. When attending the UMASS system, all the security guards are Mass State Troopers. They all have firearms. That would be that '...Well regulated militia...' protecting students.

JVoV -> RE: Umpqua mass shooting (10/1/2015 12:57:57 PM)

A community college isn't going to have its own police force. That's for larger state colleges.

At 18 the army will give them a machine gun. When I was in high school we had teachers with guns, I asume this was common, and there were no school shootings in those days. And you still ingnore two other points. Does the word qualified mean anything too you? Where did I say they should arm students, because I didn't. Arming QUALIFIED teachers would be if they chose not to have professional security which I have told you was my choice.

BamaD -> RE: Umpqua mass shooting (10/1/2015 1:04:39 PM)

All of which was done with illegally obtained firearms.
Sandy hook he obtained them by committing murder.
At Colimbine they had violated 20 someodd gun laws before they ever got to school.

Coverting an ak to full auto is also illegal.

thompsonx -> RE: Umpqua mass shooting (10/1/2015 1:11:33 PM)

It'd be like me saying that California is the most gun friendly state.

You do know that the courts in california have stated that the appropriate agency "shall" issue ccw permits to all qualified applicants.  Maybe not "the" gun friendliest state but hardly the biggest enemy.

Aylee -> RE: Umpqua mass shooting (10/1/2015 1:14:44 PM)

Very sad but it will divert the public from email scandals and the Mideast debacle.
