It is a right. There is no need to give a justification for what firearm you own or what kind. You do not have to justify the exercise of a right, except to liberals.

Is that why you can't justify it, because "you don't have to?" That's both weak and cold.

No, it is because it is none of your business, or anyone elses.

Constitutional Rights are not absolute, BTW. If the Government has a compelling interest in constricting those rights, then that is weighed the sacrifice and injury of the affected party.

The "I don't give a shit, I like guns and want to keep them," argument won't go far in court.

How much worry do gun owners put into the prospect that their weapons might be misused? Posters here describe guns the same way a stamp collector talks about postage stamps.

How much worry did the founding fathers put into the prospect that their government might be misused?

Just enough to add that Second Amendment.

Cuz commies. Talibans. Zombie invasion. Rabid dogs. 14ft snakes. And cuz the pearl handled two-shot Derringer goes with these really cute antique cufflinks I picked up last week.

I used to have a 6 foot snake in my attic. Left him allone. He ate squills, mice and such. No Taliban here.
We do have drug dealers and home invasions, and I guess rabid dogs are always a possibility. So is target shooting. I don't believe in zombies, although a couple of people on here make me wonder.

Some just can't resist purchasing the latest and greatest and end up with more of an item than they really need.

Tech toys or things that go boom; it comes down to where your interests lie. 15 guns lends the idea that the guy was a wannabe gun collector or had really low sales resistance to neato toys. Some even use firearms as an investment. You don't even what to know that a 1976 Bicentennial Colt M1911 goes for these days. That commemorative was a high priced $500 in its day and goes for more than ten times that much; if you can find one.

What have I got in the way of firearms.. hmm.
Single shot .22 that I learned to shoot with when I was 13. My great grandfather had bought it for my grandfather when he turned 13.

Pump 12 gauge shotgun. Hunting, defence, whatever.
.45 ACP Ruger P90. I like to keep my proficiency up from when I was a range master in the military.
.45 caliber black powder dueling pistol I made back in the 70a
0.44 Caliber Remington pattern cap-lock revolver. Leftover from a summer job in college doing the wild west show at a tourist trap.
0.50 caliber double barrel flint-lock pistol. Talk like a Pirate, anyone? A birthday present a couple of years ago.

I'd like to add a Springfield M1A National Match but can't find a pragmatic reason to spend $1200.00. (civilian version of the M-14 I used to train on in the military) I'd just like one.

Or you get a gun for a specific reason. Then later find a good deal on a gun that is better for that purpose.
And you are right, I made it through two different winters by selling off guns.

We have a 14ft king cobra that some jackass let get loose.

Mind you, when I see a bear in the neighborhood, I'm all 'shoo, shoo, go on with you'. But snakes freak me the fuck out. I've shot 3 eight foot or longer since I've lived in the boonies.

Do you have a cite for that? Everything I have read says the founders had the 2nd ammendment forced on them by the slave holders within the ranks of the anti-federalist. I have found nothing in the federalist papers or anything by jay, madison or hamilton to sugest this line of reasoning. Rememer the only reason the bill of rights exists is because it was the pledge from the federalist to the anti-federalist to secure their vote for the constitution.

The jackass deserve being shot more than the cobra. However I don't believe in shooting anything unless it is a threat or you are going to eat it.

Well good for you. I didn't really take the time to question the snakes' intentions, or let them get close enough to find out if they were poisonous. But after the first one, I went ahead and bought a box of hollow points.

I have seen that peice and it was discected and discredited months ago.

Then you should be able to give us a link to that?

When I was a little girl I had a shoebox full of rattlesnake tails that my dad would have to shoot in our yard. I remember one time I was sitting in the swing, legs pulled up, daydreaming I guess. My dad came out from under the car he was working on, and yelled at me not to move, He had to shoot the rattler that had coiled up under the swing. Rattlers freak me the fuck out. Other snakes not so much.

This is not a policy question. Needless to say, I'm not socializing with a lot of gun owners.

Is there any angst to gun ownership? Does it multiply with the arsenal?

Not caring is the meme -- nothing new there.

Nope nope nope. Snakes are evil. Says so in the Bible.

You know they make snake loads, about no 4 birdshot in pistol rounds, makes shooting something like a snake easier, and in theory will stop a snake. Any solid round should kill a snake, it isn't like they are on pcp and with them on the ground you don't have to worry about them going through the target into someones bedroom. Although for a 14 ft cobra I think I would want my 12 ga.

Wayward5oul -> RE: Oregon Shooter had fifteen firearms (10/3/2015 7:01:01 PM)

Already put away to be passed down to my son when he's older-a security six that my papa carried for years, and a shotgun given to my mom for her 21st birthday (we lived out in the sticks, two hours from the nearest store so she and my dad hunted for our food).

Others that I already know my son will inherit from other family members-multiple hunting rifles (for deer and duck), a glock, 2 Kriegkoffs (one valued at $11,000 the other at $12,000), and one other that has been passed down from his great-grandfather. Those are just the ones I know about. I am positive there will be others.

All are used in either competitive sport shooting (trap, skeet, etc), hunting, carried for self-defense, or are being passed down through the generations. Not to mention their monetary value. Guns don't really depreciate, as long as they are taken care of properly.

The rat snake I had in the attic was the perfect tenant.
He paid the rent (disposing of vermin), he didn't throw wild parties (that I wasn't invited to) and he staid in the attic. Had he come downstairs it would have been different.
