ORIGINAL: cloudboy So, generally speaking here, the tone is that one with multiple guns is simply a collector. There's no reasonable need or purpose enunciated here by anyone, no tie to self-defense, or even an acknowledgement of the increased danger in owning such an arsenal. One poster likened owning multiple guns to a car collection. I forgot one, a .456 hog gun. As for justification? I like guns, I have always had guns, been raised around guns, and to be quite honest, after watching the news every night as well as my personal insight gained by a nice master's in history, I am of the opinion, that human civilization is going to go balls up. Here are my reasons: 1) Governments based on the Republic are not known for lasting long in history, the longest lasting governments are usually empires. 2) Cities are can not survive if one part of the system breaks down, and a lot of people crowded into a small area is not a stable situation. Look at the results of the two worst black outs in US history, that should paint a nice picture for you. 3) International travel is so easy, that it would take one person that picked up a "new" virus, be it a super flu or whatever, traveling through just one major international hub to make a mess of the planet. It would not even have to have a high mortality rate to bring cities to a complete standstill, look at what happened with SARS. A new form of flu with even a 30% mortality rate would quickly overwhelm a major city to the point of bringing it to a stand still. Add to that the fact that as of this year, 3 new antibiotic resistant strains of plague have been found in the US Southwest, and the wonderful fact that people just love cute pets like prairie dogs, which carry the fleas that carry plague, do the math. The black death decimated the cities of the middle ages, and technology will not and cannot control a nasty bug like that. SARS had cities closing airports to international travel, a nasty bug could have cities closing airports and highways into the cities. One question, how long would New York City last without a constant stream of trucks bringing in the basics to the city? Over a million tractor trailer rigs enter that metro area on a weekly basis. So, let me pain you this picture. You have a large portion of the population of a city like New York trying to get out of the city because they do not want to get sick. Where are they going to go? You have a high percentage of doctors, nurses, cops, fire fighters etc coming down with this nasty flu, who is going to keep order? And as I said, even if it is a low 30% mortality rate, what the hell are you going to do with the bodies piling up if the people who are supposed to get rid of them are too sick to do their job? Hell, a 10% mortality rate can bring a city to a stand still. I have two pieces of property, one is where I live, the other is a 250 acre chunk where I hunt, raise a few head of cattle, and if necessary, can move my family to a place where it would be safer if such an epidemic were to hit. I have about 300 rounds of ammo for every weapon in the house, with another 10 to 20 thousand rounds at the other location. At the house, I keep two weeks worth of food for every person in the house, along with bottled water. The other location has an 18 month stockpile that can be supplemented with wild game and the few head of cattle. My home has a water well, and solar and wind generators supplementing the grid, the other location is completely off grid. I have my general ham license, and will be taking my extra in a couple of months. I have two 'modern' radios, and five old tube sets that I have reconditioned. Vehicle wise I have a deuce and half with a van on the back and one with a standard cargo bed. Both are multifuel engines. I make my own bio diesel, with the ability to do so at both locations. I have a really neat oil press that works wonders for corn and sunflowers, so I have a sustainable source of oil. So, while it may not happen, if something disastrous does, I am ready to take care of me and mine. Justification for owning a large number of guns, simple, the boy scouts taught me to be prepared. I basically have a rifle for every member of the house of an age to handle one. I have pistols for everyone that can actually use one proficiently. Now, what the hell are you going to do if you find yourself in a situation where going to the local walmart super center is a waste of time because they have nothing on the shelves?
