the us army sec of defense says that women will have to register for the draft if full equality is to be done today.
I think this is a great step forward foe equality in the army as well as helping to build a larger and more diverse force.

Nope. Not even remotely.
Especially not in the sense that "women and men should be treated exactly the same".

Women and men fundamentally are not the same, and as such, treating them as if they are is idiotic in my book.

Yes, as is done in Israel. When you have a relatively small nation which is surrounded by either their enemies or potential threats, then it is understandable that desperate times call for desperate measures.

I'm speaking in broad strokes and do not care to nitpick. When there are not enough able-bodied men to replace fallen soldiers, it is quite common for ordinary (non-conscripted) citizens to take up arms.
When Nazi Germany was facing defeat on many fronts, young German children joined the ranks of soldiers as a last ditch effort.
Historically, women have come to the defense of their tribal nations, joined their husbands in battle against invaders, etc. Women have also become marauders, and these assorted bands of women whose male warriors were wiped out became legendary Amazons, many of them widowed mothers left with young children to raise and protect from further annihilation.

It is never a good sign of strength in numbers when a formerly prosperous, thriving society cannot rely upon an abundant resource of martially trained, combat-ready males (along with those females who choose to volunteer for the Armed Forces) to maintain military might without having to resort to rounding up its women or age-inappropriate non-combatants to expose them directly to the dangers of warfare.
JMPO, strictly speaking from a pseudo-sociological and anthropological standpoint.

Particularly when armchair "egalitarians" would promote policies which could result in self-inflicted genocide.

OP, didn't your mother ever ask you rhetorically, if your buddy jumped off a bridge, does that mean that you should follow suit?

I am against registration of any sort, don't want the expense of an unnecessary army, believe the navy should be the only military branch and all other operations as pertains to the general welfare and safety of our people and our land against our enemy's should be solidified under that branch. The main problem is that such would be beneficial and cost effective to everyone who wasn't filling their own coffers from tax payer dollars or making bank off the Army-Navy game.

Alternatively, we could institute a draft solely comprised of females ages about 40-60 and let menopause take care of the rest.

If people want all the advantages/benefits that being a US citizen affords them, they need to be willing to handle the responsibility, as well.

I remember, back in the 70s, when the ladies were burning their bras and screaming about how they should be allowed to do ANY job men can do, someone (I think it was Pres. Carter) mentioned something about ladies in combat areas in the military. The first group to complain? That's right. The nags in NOW.

Not to put too fine a point on it but selective service registration doesn't necessarily mean compulsory service. We haven't had a draft in this country since the 70s.

As long as males are required (by law) to register within 30 days of their 18th birthday, I welcome the females to party.

God bless Gloria Steinem!

Okay, i was a little puzzled, because US is involved, and from what I understand, if men don't need to serve compulsory military, then why do women have to?

Are they making all men serve compulsory military service?

In my country, all men serve compulsory military service, and basically, all the men are part of the military strength when war happens, all are military ready to step in.

There has been alot of calls from men to get women to serve as well, but I suspect why it isn't happening is because of the cost to the country it would be, to pay the salaries of all these women as well during their military service.

As how it works is, whatever your normal job is, when you are called back in, that's the same amount they have pay you. So if you are making 100k per annum, they are paying you that rate. And you have to spend several times a year, a few weeks each, back inside.

And during initial training, that's 2 years of allowance, and food and lodgings they gotta sponsor for free. So it's a huge investment. Women cost more, they gotta pay for pads and tampons. Maybe even conditioner.

Last of all, once women serve military service, at least the mentality in my country is that, they have done their duty to the country. And after that, they don't want to hear about having kids ever. At the moment, the government is pressuring the women for their "military service" to have kids or have more kids.

But there is nothing wrong in making military service equal, as long as they don't go stupid and gender boxed certain jobs. Like military cooks to women, or military nurses to women, and crap like that. If I had compulsory military service, I want to be full on combat!

no compulsory service for male or female just registering for the draft. the draft was used extensively in WWII to find qualified soldiers in a time of war. the jobs have been recenty opened for females to join, just recently the 3rd one passed ranger training. as I am a male nurse in the army i can say that the fields are open if the individual wants to get in that one. i have had a female battle budy in combat and i trusted her with my life as she did for me i had no problems with it. now as far as after serving if they choose to have a child or a career either is fine here

Still don't understand.

If it's voluntary, then why is it even a gender issue? Then any gender should be able to join if they want to.

Signing up for the draft means that you sign up for a list of people they can compulsory call to war if and when they want to.

It doesn't mean that they WILL call you to serve. If there's no war going on for which they need more troops than will voluntarily enlist, then they won't compulsory call you up to serve, even if you signed up for the draft.

However, if you're draft eligible in the US (currently this applies only to males), then you HAVE to sign up for the draft, and they COULD compulsory call you up to serve.

Women currently don't have a draft eligibility, so they do not have to sign up for the draft, and they cannot compulsory be called to serve, but they can still voluntarily enlist.

yes currently all men 18-35 have to register for selective service or join the military. with all the combat jobs now open to both genders it stands to reason that females should be likewise required to register 18-35.

Yeah, totally!
Lets force more people to "serve" against their wishes!

Not less.

I can see your confusion.
Registering for the draft is quite different from compulsory service.
As pointed out nobody has been drafted since the 70's.
However males have to register for the draft in case there is one.
This is a move for "gender equality" motivated either by feminists thinking that it makes them "more equal" or anti-feminists wanting to make a point if women complain about it. It has nothing to do with there not being enough men, and it would have no affect on the size of the military.

My Israeli cousins all serve. But only two years for women versus three for men. And only the Ultra Orthodox females can be excused because they can't accidentally touch a strange man.
