ORIGINAL: bossman777 What is up with this 'mid season break' ?? I have never seen a show do that before. it's like they are having script/cast issues or something. That, or else they think they're so popular they can treat fans like shit and dribble out the episodes between long breaks... I was talking to somebody else about this just the other day. It's actually this neat little trick that has nothing to do with any of the above. The Walking Dead is one of the most expensive shows to produce on television. (All those walkers aren't cheap or free and the show wouldn't be nearly as fun without the special effects.) For a sixteen episode season, if they ran the thing straight through, they would have to claim the costs in the same financial quarter. Ah, but they don't. There's this neat little loophole in law that says they don't have to claim the production cost on their financials until the episode actually airs. It doesn't matter that they've really already spent the money. They don't have to count it until fans get to see any particular episode. By doing this, they don't have to put the lump sum of producing the show all into the same quarter. Only the first eight of the episodes for the last quarter of one year. The second eight episodes fall into others. On paper, this makes the show look less costly to produce than the overall total. Really smart business plan. Fans hate it but it works. For AMC, it's actually rather brilliant.
