They are gay men who have been dead for at least a decade or more.

Or they are self important people clinging desperately to something that never existed and they certainly don't represent.  Sort of like born again christians who would execute the real christ in a second.

Exactly, ask then who's boy they were, and you'll get a very funny response.

The best answer I've ever seen to this question was given by MsSilvie on Feb 4, 2005:

"It means one of two things. Either the person was involved in the gay leather scene with somewhat militaristic undertones after WWII to the early 60's, or..... someone is trying to give themselves instant credibility by pretending to have some kind of special training that makes them elite and some how better than others.

Usually, it means the latter."

Well, since the snarky replies are already well represented, I'll put mine away and try to be more informative. (ETA: Ooops..too late, someone got the links up).

Every label in BDSM is pretty much self defined... people can call themselves anything they wish, and cook up any definition to support their claim to it...Master, Gorean, Old Guard, whatever.

Once upon a time there was a group of gay leathermen, and some of them may have followed a certain protocol....including not being allowed to dominate another man, until they had been submissives for a long time  themselves..becoming a Master was a sort of graduation at the end of the process. Presumably, they had learned about fisting, whipping, etc, by having it done to them first.

Fast forward to today... care to find me the Old Guard School of Dominance listed by any regular accrediting body?

But if you hang around, I'll bet you meet plenty of 'Old Guard' Masters...hence the cynical responses at the beginnning of the thread.

Ladyhugs posts on old guard are pretty laughable.

It was concentrated in SF and NY and a few other big cities and is pretty well documented.

lets not forget that this is the same group that brings us drag queens and glory holes...which if the glory holes had women on the other side might be of more interest to me.

That is just silly.... the Old Guard are not he orginal master minds of this lifestyle.  Hell it was happening alot earlier before they came into existence.  I was doing kinky things before I had internet or even saw a magazine or those old BBS boards.  It's amazing what happens when two people come together with uninhibited sexually desires and see what they come up with.

secondly, no one is snarfing at the "Old Guard"  They are snarfing at the constant fools that try to give themselves creditibility and labeling themselves as "Old Guard".   The funny thing is "Old Guard" didn't call themselves "Old Guard" to gain creditibility.  They did it the old fashion way... They earned it from their peers!

We know.  Just ask them, they'll tell you.  Oh wait, you won't need to ask....

Sorry, but based on my experience, the replies maybe snarky, but they're right on the money.

There once was a band of merry men who formed a sect around the underarm deoderant 'Right Guard' and there was much rite and ritual that was attached to the wearing, storing and common usage thereof.

Some vanilla wannabe's banded together at some point and pointed out that it was depleating the ozone layer.  It was subsequently banned from sales outlets.  The 'Right Guard' had no choice at that point but to whisper away into the annals of history.  This is how they became the 'Old Guard' of fond rememberance.

The last known 'European House of Slavery'  was committed  to the rubble in Gumshoe, North Dakota on February 12th, 1956 in a solomn ceremony; performed by Lord Fearsome J. Titwilliger.  The culmination of which ceremony was extraordianarily marked by the vanishing of the Pope of Perversion to some demonic darkhold of a dungeon who's bowels have never been traced...........

Devoutly,
Ron

Yes, but hers are reflective of how things really are...
The majority of people claiming Old Guard status are pretty much making it up nowadays.
Your apparent  rebuttal claim that someone too young or too straight to be part of the original small group, but who claims to be 'Old Guard' should be venerated, is, with all due respect, laughable.

I didn't say any such thing, only that our (and everyone's) experiences are different.  And I do know the difference between the ones who profess to be "old guard" and those who don't have to "profess" it, but just perpetuate it.  There are some of them still around, though, yes, many are dead.

Carol,

How can someone lay claim to a label that is by definition time based if they were not there during that time?

It is like when you go to the store and something says "genuine style" you know what it means is "absolute fake"...which is all any of us are saying.

OK, sorry for the miscommunication, it read as though you were saying I was wrong to make fun of the current claimants.

I'm obviously having a terrible time with the mind reading thing today.

Well, I'm just having a heck of a time expressing myself today! LOL.  I used the word "perpetuate" purpose - yes the "label" is time-based, but perpetuate prolongs and honors something - causes it to be remembered.

per·pet·u·ate tr.v., -at·ed, -at·ing, -ates.
  1. To cause to continue indefinitely; make perpetual.
  2. To prolong the existence of; cause to be remembered: The new library will perpetuate its founder's great love of learning.

Make more sense?
