Or they are self important people clinging desperately to something that never existed and they certainly don't represent.  Sort of like born again christians who would execute the real christ in a second.

I am not sure what "Old Guard" is, but to myself, my friends and my colleagues who are all in their late 40s or older, it might mean this:

1) Discretion. We have real jobs and if our bosses knew we would lose our careers.
2) Lack of psychobabble. We are not into spending lots of time bragging about our spirituality etc. BDSM is something we love to do. Some people  like to race go carts or collect rare stamps. We like to dominate our subs.
3) Happy. At our age we have grown comfortable with ourselves.

I was very fortunate to attend a Leather Leadership Conference back in...I think it was 2004 (whichever recent one was in New Orleans/) While I was there I had the opportunity to speak with a few who had lived what we call the Old Guard Lifestyle. They had some pretty enlightening experiences to share. I would definitely encourage anyone who has the opportunity to attend a Leather Leadership Conference, to do so.

When I was on a Board of Directors for a BDSM club in Baton Rouge, we had developed some  ties to those in the Gay Leather groups.  An editor for one of the gay magazines, who considered himself a next generation of the Old Guard, had myself and another board member over for lunch, and I recall being awed by the energy between our host and his slave.  There wasn't any ambiguity between the slaves total surrender to his Master.  He had some old journals, articles, and experience he shared with us that really opened my eyes to the amazing dynamic of what we call Old Guard.  Quite an amazing learning experience for me.

It seems to me that most in the Lifestyle wear blinders where the philosophy of the Old Guard was concerned, probaby because it is a pretty extreme philosophy of take no shit, allow no shit.  I know it isn't what it once was, but the truth of the matter is, I consider them to be the pioneers of BDSM.

Edited to add:  Thanks for the links, MsPandora.

Check you math, the "old guard" was supposed to be the guys who came out of the military experience of WWII and gathered in NYC, SF, Hollywood and a few other big cities where they used things like motorcycle clubs and other leather oriented "hobbies" to allow congregating without being too obvious... Any WWII vets would be well beyond their 60's.
