I was sitting here thinking of the 10K refugees that Obama wants to bring to the US. I have a thought on this and wanted to get your input. Why not open up some closed military bases for the purpose of housing them. The necessary infrastructure is there (housing, food preparation and medical facility, etc) that would of course have to be restocked with beds, food, medical items, etc.

Tkman117 -> RE: Refugee Camps (12/9/2015 7:19:59 AM)

Because refugees don't want to be housed, they want to live their lives as normally as possible until the day comes that they might be able to return home, or permanently stay if they prefer. They're not animals you know.

Housed? why and for how long? From what i have read on the refugee vetting process, the refugees go thru a first vetting/inquisition with the UN, then after that, if they are to be sent to the US, the US then vets them (again and again and again) multiple times.. the refugees are not (as I understand it) in the US while the 2 to 4 year process takes place... Only after all that, do they get a plane ticket to come here (from whatever overseas refugee camp they have been living in), then they are sent to various locations throughout the US for settlement.. (FYI, refugee applicants are handled differently from those seeking asylum)..

I am not even sure if refugees get a choice in what country the UN sends their application to.. I dont get the impression that they do..

Except the choosers in this case are people who'd rather have them penned up like animals and being kept alive on the government's dime instead of letting them contribute to the economy. If it's fear that they're extremists then it's unfounded because the number of cases where refugees are terrorists are so small it almost doesn't exist. It's the 2nd generation immigrants that feel ostracized, likely because of sentiments like this, that produce terrorists.

lovmuffin -> RE: Refugee Camps (12/9/2015 9:00:54 AM)

So where is the information coming from that we're going to use to vet them with ?

Yeah I wouldn't expect any real terrorists would exploit the situation [8D]

where does the information come from that is the basis for the terrorist watch list and no fly list and all the other lists and databases out there?

If you really want to know the answer why dont you ask your govt??? I doubt they would tell ya since sources of their (& other govts) info would be confidential due to security issues (blah, blah, blah).. it took Snowden fleeing the country and making public some of what the NSA & other letter agencies get up to, and that is just the tip of the iceberg, I am sure.. The US govt doesnt want you to know or it would tell ya..

kdsub -> RE: Refugee Camps (12/9/2015 9:49:38 AM)

I agree as long as it is only a temporary facility until they are processed for normal immigration. That many people coming all at once will undoubtedly produce problems and i believe it will actually be more humane to have proper housing and medical support. I believe it was Ron who said that many of these immigrants have already been in processing centers in Jordan... In that case they can just follow the normal procedures.

mnottertail -> RE: Refugee Camps (12/9/2015 9:54:24 AM)

Uh, we take in 1 million people a year. 10000 over a year aint nothing, no huge influx. Its rather embarrassing compared to other countries.

kdsub -> RE: Refugee Camps (12/9/2015 10:09:31 AM)

I don't believe this country will open its doors to a rush of Syrian refugees without some sort of special vetting process. In this political climate it could be political suicide to do so...what do you think? I'm not talking right or wrong but my opinion on what will realistically happen.

The last i heard they were estimating the vetting process could take more than a year... what will be done with these families during this time? Don't you think it better to be housed here rather than their home countries while they are waiting?

they are in refugee camps now in the middle east.

They would be vetted by this agency first layer if they came here.

There is a word, its called 'ghetto'. Yes, your well meaning in your understanding of the problem. However we as Americans want to integrate them into our society quickly, seamlessly, and with dignity. Placing them in different areas of the country forces not only them to accept us, their host country; but for us, to accept them as people striving for a world of peace, freedom, and liberty!

You could try a search on Google and look for things ending in ".gov"?

It *REALLY* is not hard to find the process out with a simple search online. There is no government conspiracy on the process. Its stated straight out, on the process. If you need to narrow your search, try the State Department. Failing that, ask your local Representative to Congress.

We should treat the Syrian refugees differently from other refugees, eh? Violation of the US Constitutions right there! The process is standardized and well detailed. Yes, its complicated but not hard to figure out for someone whom graduated high school with a diploma (or got their GED). Each refugee, regardless of where they are coming from, are funneled into the same process to check on all information (what they say and what governments around the world have to say). A determination can be made and the matter taken up in court if the 'refugee party' disagrees with the ruling (yes, they can do that under the 1st amendment).

Yes it would be. If this nation has any real journalists left; would go into such camps and make Americans aware of their treatment. Making sure processes are not stalled due to fear and bigotry by individuals of the conservative political outlook. If Syria gets back to a stable entity; those refugees could return home regardless of their current progress in the system. Or if they opt to stay with the process; they'll have to wait it out.

KenDckey -> RE: Refugee Camps (12/9/2015 11:00:29 AM)

Joe You gotta start them someplace. I suspect the majority will have to learn about our culture, language, possibly job skills needed in the US, etc. It is a lot easier than to just dump them in hometown someplace, USA and leaving them to their own devices.

That's the point, there isn't enough information on them to do a proper job of vetting.

I agree - it's going to be a rarity. To indoctrinate a terrorist up to the required level; to train him/her in the use of weapons and other required military skills; then let him take all the risks of going through the whole refugee palaver .... Seems unlikely. It wouldn't be the way I'd want to use my 'assets' as a 'terrorist general', anyway. Much more likely, as well as easier, safer and cheaper: "radicalise" somebody who's already in the target country.

Aylee -> RE: Refugee Camps (12/9/2015 11:53:19 AM)

As a veteran I find the "military base = penned like animals or a ghetto" somewhat amusing in a dark way.
