quote:
ORIGINAL: Cell I'm not really saying these things because I think people's opinions matter lol, more because I think we mere mortals can't grasp the truth, and so our only real hope is to try and understand things as best we can. That's why I try to consider context and outcomes and all that... I tend to allow for exceptions. I feel like there's some wisdom in embracing the uncertainty in that way. There is no 'truth'. All you have is making the most of your life. That will mean different things to different people. To me, it means having principles and enjoyment, and enjoyment to me means experiencing as much of the whole range of emotions as I can. To other people, enjoyment will mean security, that's not for me. But, there certainly ain't no truth - that's an Enlightenment sentiment to the effect that somehow we can understand and control the things around us. To me this sentiment has been shown to be wrong time and time again, others would disagree. When you say: "our only hope is to understand things as best we can", I would ask what things? Many, many things are beyond our comprehension and so trying to understand certain things will only ever set you up for failure. The very best minds have tried to understand many things over the centuries and failed. The reason being they got ahead of themselves and forgot they were merely human beings. And, people aren't objective and reasonable - that's a manipulation tool aimed at setting the stage before getting down to convincing people they have 'the truth'.
