MrRodgers -> Senate hit a new level of absurdity...blocking judges (3/10/2016 6:03:38 AM)

Republicans Are Even Blocking Their Own Nominees Now.

Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) requested on the floor that senators take up and confirm Waverly Crenshaw, a Tennessee district court nominee backed by GOP Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker. She also asked for a vote on one her judicial nominees, Paula Xinis. Both are next in line for votes, based on the order in which nominees reach the floor.

.....with strong support from his GOP senators and who unanimously cleared the Judiciary Committee was denied a vote.

Isn't this getting a bit ridiculous ? Read it, am I missing something ? Is McConnell asleep ?

HERE

"If every senator could come down here and cherry-pick different nominations from the calendar and ask consent that we move to executive session and consider those ... it would result in some chaos," Cornyn said.

First of all, why ? But are these judges 'next in line' or what ? I think Cronyn is wrong either way.

You're missing something.

Mikulski asked for unanamous consent to move a couple of judges to hearings. This is the province of the judiciary committee. Since the requiest was unanimous consent - it only took one objection to stop it.

In other words, political theater, nothing more.

Well it still means the Jud. comm. then must be dragging their feet and I am not surprised. I am telling you, the repubs could be playing with political fire here.

HERE

Obama: less than 1/2 of those confirmed going back to Carter. Does it mean nothing that these judges were 'next in line ?'

Phydeaux -> RE: Senate hit a new level of absurdity...blocking judges (3/10/2016 2:52:00 PM)

So let me get this straight..

You think non confirmation of judges is going to motivate low information voters to vote more than global warming, terrorism attacks in the US, abortion rights, Bernie sanders, gun rights, Idaho, illegal immigration etc etc..
AND you think the issue will break so strongly in favor of the democrats as to be material.

It *could* happen. But I don't think it will.

Lucylastic -> RE: Senate hit a new level of absurdity...blocking judges (3/10/2016 3:12:40 PM)

you would be surprised at the ire it is causing...especially as its just more stupidity in a long line of GOP congress and senate vulgarianism
nothing to do with dems.
Well apart from the fact people are blaming obama for the GOP and trump, and now violence is happening it will only get worse.

Apparently not.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if it caused some ire. However, iirc more than 60% of americans can't name a surpreme court justice, 95% can't name 3.
I would lay 80/20 it doesn't cause a 4 pt bounce.

Plus its my suspicion that the repubs are handing it right. Cause ire now, with the expectation that obstruction becomes the new normal over the next months and it dies down.

Probably not even close to 4 pts. With congress at 16% approval they might go to 15% and of course, that will not cause any loss of sleep. The only problem and this and it is still a somewhat new one, they way things go public now and can go viral and enough of them in the next 8 mos. or so could, make a difference in close races.

DarkSteven -> RE: Senate hit a new level of absurdity...blocking judges (3/11/2016 2:25:50 AM)

My take is that the GOP wants to block any Obama nominee for Supreme Court justice. To make it look like that's not their game, they'll block all nominees.

Statesmanship is dead. Posturing and blocking is easier.

saw a small article on townhall yesterday stating the results of a recent survey of indepedents---the majority, 53%, do not want an ideologically driven supreme court appointee. by contrast, 41% saw a temporary vacancy as the bigger problem.

But the Senate's tantrum isn't over ideology--it's a blanket no.

Lindsay Graham has always been batshit crazy, that he is less crazy than trump cruz or rubio is not an accolade

I used to like him too at least on many issues but now it seems that no repubs can be seen as...getting off the reservation.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Senate hit a new level of absurdity...blocking judges (3/11/2016 1:16:09 PM)

Blocking judges is absurd ... almost as absurd as making people criminals for speaking their mind, but that's what the hearings on capitol hill with AG Lynch were about, yesterday.

That pesky Constitution is in the way again, right lib? (like that pun?) Don't pretend you are stupid enough to think Congress nominates candidates. Read article 2 of the U.S. Constitution the way it is written, not the way you want it to be, fucking moron. Matter of fact, read the entire Constitution. Jeeze, soon we will have the libs put into the shitcan where they belong. Fuck heads.

ImperialPath -> RE: Senate hit a new level of absurdity...blocking judges (3/11/2016 3:53:26 PM)

Yes, in America it is the right and responsibility of Congress to block appointments the President tries to make unless the Congress likes them. This is called "separation of powers" and is the cornerstone of our way of Government and it keeps Presidents in line, eventually. So, bitch and complain all you want but this is exactly the way things are supposed to work so a President or a Congress or a Supreme Court cannot take full control of the Government, remember, according to that pesky ole Constitution the three branches are equal in power and you will be glad of that when Trump takes office because although he is a great executive (for the Executive Branch, right?), controls must be in place to keep him from thinking he can appoint Czars, which by the way, is the reason the current "Czars" are powerless now that Congress is busy blocking those assholes.

ImperialPath -> RE: Senate hit a new level of absurdity...blocking judges (3/11/2016 4:00:06 PM)

So...now you know what Congress has been doing since the last elections...their primary job, blocking overreach by the Excecutive Branch. Surprise! So after Trump takes office they might have time to actually repeal old shit (you know) and pass new but better smelling shit (you know)...

...and build a wall so Arizona and Texas can get back to worrying about stuff we worry about instead of the border.
