Just sucking up the dollars We need smaller government. Let the market decide. Why should we support these leeches? Your thoughts?

Why would you call them leeches? Can you think of anything more important than our food supply? Farming is a high risk endeavor where world prices and weather make it difficult to bridge feast from famine. Over the years the government programs have kept our, and much of the worlds, food supply stable and reasonably plentiful. The money spent in my opinion is well worth it. Butch

Butch The agriculture subsidies were born from the Depression of the 30s, Butch. We absolutely need a free market economy. Anyway, we can get our food more cheaply from South America. So, the family farm land can be sold to build houses and Big Ag can just take the market risk or move to South America. Have you seen many blacksmiths lately? Or switchboard operators? I don't think so. Farming should also be subject to free market forces. We should stop subsidizing them. We have sent our manufacturing overseas and some of our financial processes (hello India) Free trade and competition lead to cheaper prices. Get the government out of farming.

I can't imagine a worse situation than our country depending too much on other countries to supply our food. Which reminds me, I need to get out there and prepare the soil for planting my vegetable garden in May. Also, why the hell won't my bell pepper seeds sprout? Gah!

I believe they are competing in a free market...the low prices of food in our markets is the result. The subsidies as I stated are a bridge and method to stabilize these prices and worth the outlay... Would you rather have wildly fluctuating prices along with very limited selection of foods and nutrition? I wouldn't. This system works and is a wise use of our tax dollars. Butch

Also, if our companies (jobs) are in other countries and our food is grown in other countries - how are we planning on paying whatever Extortion prices our now dependence upon others could cost us? If we are the demand part of the equation and other countries are the supply...it isn't a very good position of leverage. I guess we could send our people over THERE to work the way migrant farmers come here. Then we wouldn't have the pesky worry over illegal immigrants...

Thanks :) There is no sun in michigan until after mother's day. Even those bright street lights won't allow for the germination of seeds.[:(]

We import oil, tungsten,titanium and other stratigic materials so why the issue with food?

government subsidy is not free market. where is food cheap? most will tell you it is not cheap, with $5 hamburger and whatnot.

This will be my first year trying to grow a small vegetable garden that isn't comprised of a few potted tomatoes. The tomato, & cucumber seeds sprouted just fine inside but the bell peppers have twice tried to sprout but never fully grew. As for subsidized farming, if the government broadened the choices of crops that could be grown besides depending so much on corn it might help balance things better.

There are two rather obvious problems with this. One is that all businesses have risk, all businesses have global competition and none get this kind of corp. welfare. The other problem is 55% of farm subsidies go to big agra. some sources say more, while 45% to what one might call...a family farm some of which are huge, very profitable operations. Just as in any business, if one can make money in farming, fine. If one cannot...get out of farming, the taxpayer does not owe you a living in the farming business.
