outlier -> NBA Player Baltantly Disrespects Canada (5/8/2016 12:05:37 PM)

I am putting this here because it does have political implications.

Dwyane Wade has been the resident star of the Miami Heat
for several years. He is one of the all time great basketball
guards. He apparently also has that incredible sense of
superiority and entitlement typical of the worst athletes.

The last time a player disrespected an anthem in the NBA
he was suspended. That was 1996.

I think Wade's denial of being disrespectful is dismissible. I know
what he said, I believe his behavior.

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens in this case.
The next game is scheduled to be played in Toronto.

An "all-time great" basketball guard? I'm not so sure about that.

Regardless, he should have been a lot more respectful and have followed the rules. The Heat is my #2 team and I have a whole lot of respect for Wade (the main reason I even give a rat's ass about the Heat anymore). However, his actions were ridiculous, and I do hope he isn't treated differently than Abdul-Rauf.

I expect the Raptor fans will embrace Wade with greetings and salutations befitting their feelings.

As far as I am concerned, when it comes to the NBA, if it was dissolved, we could save a whole lotta oil.

I'm not following the link to oil use.

I'm a die-hard (American) football fan. All other sports exist solely to get me from the Super Bowl to NFL preseason and the start of the NCAA seasons.

ThatDizzyChick -> RE: NBA Player Baltantly Disrespects Canada (5/8/2016 2:18:51 PM)

As a Canadian, I just plain don't give a shit. Anybody who is upset by this is, in my opinion, desperately in need of an actual problem to get worked up over.
The whole thing is fucking stupid.

tj444 -> RE: NBA Player Baltantly Disrespects Canada (5/8/2016 2:44:21 PM)

well,.. i cant help but think he is just upholding Trump's "America First" theme.. [8|]

There was an article on Trump recently that referred to him as defining "The Ugly American",.. considering how many have sung Trump's praises, voted for him, jumping for joy to meet/see him, etc.. I expect to see a whole lot more disrespect being shown by such Americans to the rest of the world..

It's a joke because as far as I am concerned the NBA is made up mostly of empty-headed, entitled, and with this now, apparently disrespectful, little prima donnas. The game has been reduced to traveling, 3 pointers and dunks.

The last great pro basketball was Lakers/Celtics of the 80's. Being Originally from Detroit, I am hockey and football and of course...auto racing with drag racing first. Yes, soon, when hockey is done, I will follow the Nationals/Tigers, Skins/Lions, Capitals/Redwings but that's about all now as they (Nats) will choke if they make the postseason.

Wow. That's one hell of a stretch just to bitch about Trump.

Blank101 -> RE: NBA Player Baltantly Disrespects Canada (5/8/2016 8:05:20 PM)

I doubt this will have any political implications. It's just one superstar (im stretching here), being highly disrespectful. I don't know enough about Wade to determine if it was intentional, or if he was just amped up to play.

If you want to make this political we could discuss the Pacers banning Raptor fans from using the 'We The North' signs.

ONLY to a politico fuckwit would this 'action' have any "-political implications-." What? we gonna defend ourselves against Canadian bombs or economic sanctions, now?

In the first place, there are more than a few American (or European), or other athletes, in a variety of countries who, by look on their face, tolerate their own or any other national anthem as best they can, having to suffer through that 16 or 82 or 162 times a year, (though the suffering continues if they make the playoffs).

Any national anthem I've heard in my life constitutes the greatest offense to those with any good musical sense at all, but let's leave that for another day. Though we can't leave it there with out answering the question of why the musically inclined athletes oftentimes have such pained looks on their face in that ritual ordeal. So often given a zoom shot taken as expression of 'deep patriotism.'

Wade was, if anything (at worst), trying to disrespect, discredit, or possibly 'intimidate' the other team, who cares fuckall about Canada, the US, or whatever or whomever else. I agree, though, that his never having taking practice shots during a musical or (heaven help us) a vocal rendition of the American national anthem proves that he didn't have the best intention at heart. (Though, do we have that as actual fact, every game he ever played?)

Other than to say that outright disrespect of Canada itself, as a nation, was nearly impossible as any precise motive in this case.

WHEN are you people going to STFU and go away?

Of course it won't, because it is fucking irrelevant.

I'm hoping that it does have "political implications". I hope Canadia does like Michigan did vís-à-vís North Carolina. I hope they bar all un-necessary travel to the U.S.

That'll fix our wagon! Uh-huh!

maybe trudeau will play hoops against obama...
I have to agree its not gonna make any difference at all.
I do remember the upside down flag incident, but that didnt cause any political hiccup

I disagree. I have some excellent musical sense (and taste) and I happen to enjoy "O Canada !"

I enjoy singing it, a lot more than I enjoy singing "The Star Spangled Banner " (From a musical perspective. I am honored to sing my country's national anthem, any time I'm asked).
