Don't oysters change their sex a half dozen times in their lifetime ? That must make choosing a bathroom very confusing for the poor little sods. They, as a group, DEFINITELY need unisex bathrooms I would guess

All this talk about god's wrath. Bullshit. First of all, is there even enough water on this planet to flood the whole thing ? For example, Denver, Colorado is referred to as the mile high city. That is because it is a a mile in elevation. That means to flood Denver you need a mile of water ALL OVER THE PLANET.

All this talk of global warming, well we might lose Florida and New Orleans and a bunch of coastal area. But actually it will be easier to make the arid areas arable. To make good soil you flood the land with seawater. NOT fresh water. Then it has to lay around for a time, but after that you got good land.

Antarctica is not below sea level. You can measure the ice. The Arctic, well there is not a land mass under it. So figure that like the ice that sank the Titanic, most of that ice is already submerged so even if you melt all of it I doubt you could flood Denver.

If an entity can create all that water and then make it disappear it can surely find a better solution. It could easily just target the ones he considers wicked and evil with a disease, or some form of accident.

And another thing, it would have had to take 100 years to build that ark just to hold two of each species of animal. Have any idea how many species' there are ? Hell, there are even more of insects and though and despite their smaller size they would not have fit. Not in something that could be built back then even in a LONG human lifetime. Even flying insects cannot fly constantly. There should be no insects.

And how did he feed them all ? They were not jumping off and going hunting on their own, or grazing, or any such thing.

And for what ? This entity decided to punish everyone though not all were displeasing ? The religious fanatics certainly believe that this entity can hit any individual with cancer, or a whole host of diseases. So how come these politicians are so damn healthy ? Do you hear of them getting cancer or AIDS ? (even the ones who are homosexual or bi) They probably know what causes those things. I also would like to know why, right after they decided to flouridize the water they started having bottled water brought in. But that is a digression. I wasn't bitching about them at the moment, per se.

Stalin was healthy I think. Hitler was healthy. Pretty sure Mao was healthy. Jeffery Daumer was healthy. That Kim Jung whatever looks like he's in pretty good shape, though it is kinda round. And if you think Putin is evil (which I do not) have a look at him. Look how many people are in a powered wheelchair and Depends at that age.

If there is one thing for sure - if there is such an entity at all, it does not judge on Earth. You supposedly get it after you die. Now if it has time to go through all the people who ever died, it can't separate the good from the bad here ? Bullshit.

Don't mind me much, just tearing religion a new asshole with logic. Just like I do with global warming. Oh by the way, Portland, Oregon schools have now banned any information disputing AGW. Some truth that has to be enforced by authority. I only know of one other "truth" that is enforced by authority, and all that information came from the Soviet Union, and you know how we could trust them. One website says the debate is hot, others not. Some point to the fact that 90+ % of scientists agree it is happening, but the estimates of how much vary by at least 300 %, so a shitload of them are wrong, just not 100 % wrong.

Well they say that on long ocean voyages some of the sailors were afraid to fall off the edge of the Earth. They thought it was flat, but at the time people who were educated did not. Since Ptolemy was knocked off his high horse and Kopernicus' theory adopted, only the uneducated believed that. But there were alot of people with no education. You probably could say that back then perhaps 90 % were not educated, or very minimally educated, excluding "wasting time" on the mechanations of the solar system. Like a trade school instead of a university, and these days, sometimes you make more money coming out of a trade school.

But the captains and navigators of these ships knew it. Even with the fucked up theory of Ptolemy they managed to navigate. Zenith and nadir were there, Polaris was there, they had clocks and sextants. Even though they worked on the fucked up theory that the sun and entire universe revolved around the Earth and rotated, they could still navigate. So when you see me dispute what you WERE TOLD is absolute truth, I am doing it out of logical reasons. Like the AGW, I would have to be a total idiot to claim us burning all this shit is not warming up the planet. But the scope and effects cannot be determined, they THINK they can but they cannot. It is that simple. Not believing something does not necessarily mean you are disputing it.

You're missing the most obvious objection to the global deluge story there: if the entire world was innundated with rising seas, how did the freshwater fish survive? There's not one word in the whole of Genesis about Noah having an aquarium on the ark.

Wow, now that you mention it...

I really do try to think of everything but that one got past me. Salt water kills a whole bunch of aquatic life if not meant for it.

There are a few other things, like birds for example. OK, I did mention them. But actually, scorpions, maybe snakes could survive, many amphibians. What about spiders ? Spiders generally don't feed on humans but they eat insects by catching them in a web, usually flying insects but they will eat the stray flea or whatever gets in the house once they stumble across the web. But they certainly do not live under or on the water.

The story only is plausible, minimally if the flood was not complete but somehow covered most of the inhabited world. It is assumable that much of this was in coastal areas because they have the arable land and can sustain life, unlike the desert. So, what does that mean ? The areas flooded I am sure people would have fled to higher ground, even though it was desert in many places. So they starved to death ? I mean, just how fast can it rain all over the whole planet ? Rain is not going to cause anything like a tidal wave. (which is actually a misnomer anyway, tides don't work that fast)

Actually I wonder now, was Noah before or after Moses ? Now there is another whole 55 gallon drum of worms. Parting the Red Sea. I think if anything he knew something that others did not, possibly about a sand dune or something landwise under there near the surface that would be exposed at low tide.

I think alot of these stories, as well as alot of mythology, did not simply come from nowhere. But they have been embellished so much that the truth is totally obscured. That being the case, unfortunately it means nothing. Like if I wrote that I built a bicycle, they would say I had magical powers and created it out of thin air. I also think Jesus was a bad mofo. They stuck him in that tomb and he wasn't really dead, just kinda run down. After all he kicked the moneychangers out of the temple. How many you imagine there were, 50 ? Maybe more ? And one guy kicks them all out ? How did he accomplish that ? They did not recognize him as anything but jack shit. He was probably tough as nails. Didn't he work as a carpenter in earlier life ? Well that is not like today with power tools so you had to be in shape to do it. This was a bunch of merchants and middlemen. Vendors. Not physically strong.

So they put the rock in front of the tomb and they can't figure out that he was already strong as fuck, survived your crucifixion and then with the help of adrenaline because otherwise he dies, was able to move it out of the way and get out. And then put it back.

However one thing occurred to me that has to be bullshit, Jonah and the whale. And Lot's Wife, a pillar of salt from turning her head ? Well that's two.

All this. So god could get to Lot's Wife singularly and punish her or a small infraction, but those who commit genocide are untouchable ? Look at what some people in history have done. Lot's Wife should be in heaven.

But then there was no heaven until Jesus, at least that you could get to. Judaism generally has no afterlife, and after quite a debate with them on that with them claiming you get your rewards on Earth, it is only logical to conclude that it is superstition. And Jews got me to think this, nobody else, by their own words. The debate actually started with circumcision.

Yup. Now that custom is on another level, I think there is a real reason for it. There is a physical condition called phimosis that is that the foreskin is too tight. Well infants do get erections sometimes and one could forcibly push the glans through the too tight opening, making it impossible for the kid to urinate.

Now think about the operation required when that happens. Very delicate. And must be done right away. And there were no ambulances.

Anyway, it is quite possible that circumcision was adopted because of that condition, perhaps they are more prone to it. That would explain it though. Now Muslims waiting eight years instead of eight days makes no sense but alot of religion makes no sense.

But some does. I eat pork but I also know that pigs are among the closest in body chemistry to humans. In a way, maybe it is close to cannibalism ? I know that pig insulin was used or diabetics until the synthetic stuff came out. I wonder what diabetic Jews and Muslims did, just die ? They have also done experimental transplants with pig organs into humans, and though not a total success, worked better than from lower primates.

Without religion we would have progressed alot more scientifically. Energy would not be a problem, but the human race is a backwards people. We would have had a Man on Mars by now. We would not have figured out a cure for cancer, we would have figured out the cause. We might have had faster than light travel if not for fucking Einstein. I think he held back, and I think he did it because of how people (and governments) are. In fact not only was he against the creation of Israel, he also said that if he was not sure the Germans would have developed the nukes, he would have never helped the allies. Actually there is a piece of fiction I have read (which is rare) that I found quite good called The Final Theory. It was about he did solve it and the universe is folded on top of itself. This leads to the development of a weapon whereby any place in the universe can be destroyed with a cyclotron. With the correct calculations of course. This leads to an intrigue with an agent who has a hardon for the US because they killed his family and whatever, I am not going to spoil it. but it was a really good read, violence all over the place ad all that, I wish they would make a movie out of it, I would watch it.

But again, fiction. And that is what we were talking about anyway right ?

Not to mention...

If this entire group of humans and animals were effectively marooned on an ark for more than 40 days, what did the lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, and all the other feline predators eat during that time? What did any of the other carnivores eat?

And how did Noah come to find two of every species on earth within walking distance of his ark - and how exactly did he "convince" any of the wild animals to get on board without fighting each other or trying to eat some of their fellow passengers?

And therein lies the problem with all of the fairy tales like Noah's Ark.
It can't be explained rationally, so it must be a miracle, just like Jack and the Beanstalk.

There's some vague scraps of archeological evidence that it might refer to a historical expansion of the dead sea, which at one point was a lot smaller, but obviously, trying to explain or rationalise anything in the Bible is completely unacceptable...

IIRC, there's a lot in Robert Graves' The White Goddess about earlier myth stories that were recycled into the Talmud while Judaism was becoming the the dominant religion in a big chunk of the middle east. Flood myths are definitely part of that.

You could look at it like that or it could be more along the lines of if I can't conceive of a way for it to have happened then it must not have happened.

I suppose that one can look at certain mysteries in that fashion, if they so chose. But they might do well to remember that there's long long way between being a rational sceptic and possessing an unshakeable conviction that the impossible occurs due to the agency of a very specific yet invisible supernatural friend in the sky. And at some point in between the two, (the ability to) reason ceases to be a relevant factor.

IOW if you're right you're devout, but if you're wrong you're a nutter.

genesis 7:11 says "springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of heaven were opened..."

an additional key verse to what im about to add is genesis 1:6-8 that talks about god separating the waters below from the waters above.

they both speak to whats known as the canopy theory,

and you can find more here: http://creationwiki.org/Canopy_theory

Okay. . . Aliens, with sufficiently advanced technology as to be indistinguishable from magic, did it.

Does that make you feel better? Can you sleep tonight now?

As a favorite comedian has said several times, believing in Bible stories means believing in those who wrote the stories, i.e. people who believed the earth was flat, had no idea what an atom was or what a germ was, and had no idea where the sun went at night.

Then after more than a millenium had passed, human intelligence progressed to the point where astronomy was established and humans were able to figure out the sun didn't really go anywhere at night. It simply orbited around the earth - an earth which, by the way, was still flat and did not have gender-neutral bathrooms - or indoor plumbing. But those bathrooms were still probably the place where most people would read the Bible because there were no monthly magazines yet.

As far as I know humanity is not able to control the weather. I would be more afraid of fire then water these days.
I have heard there are fish that can survive in either salt or fresh water.
How does anyone know if today's animal predators even ate meat then? Is there evidence? Maybe they survived on manna.
No one is alive to tell the story.
Whether one believes it to be fact or fiction, religious or not, there is a moral and lesson in the story. Considering the condition of the world it is the perfect reminder.

Does any of this matter? There was a big bearded bloke in the sky who told Noah that he was going to flood the Earth. After that, pretty much anything else that doesn't make sense, does.

Yup, that's another thing. But I do not remember that that were on the ark for forty days, it was that it rained for forty days and forty nights. I do not remember how long they were stuck on the the ark.

To try to rationalise this, so maybe it happened but the scope of it was not the whole Earth. Perhaps in an area of lower elevation, a whole nation could flood. Ask the Dutch. The entire surface of the planet being underwater is practically unfathomable. But a certain region, not so much.

Of course a believer will say that god made the animals cooperate, and pretty much sleep off the tie they are stuck on the ark. But those lions and tigers did not have Cheerios for breakfast so there are probably a couple of species' missing.

But then being regional explains that away as well. We have had floods since. That one, unless it is total bullshit, was just bigger.

It could just be total bullshit.
