I believe we have a ' Right of Refusal' law over here, where the business owner doesn't have to give a reason for refusing service but can go ahead and do it.

We should have that to, but too much PC.

P.C. over here means you are willing to belt anybody in the chops, regardless of colour, religion or nationality *smile*.

I like that too. I am totally open minded. My willingness to engage in such activities is based solely on there actions, regardless of race, creed, or religion.

You would make a good aussie mate *smile*. you just have to learn to relax and not get too worked up over things *smile*. I always thought you southerners were supposed to be near as laid back as us !!!

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Westboro Hate group to protest Orlando funerals (6/18/2016 8:07:33 PM)

There are two phrases you need to learn before coming here though................" She'll be right mate" (it'll be okay and work itself out) ....................and "Go for your life mate " ( help yourself to whatever you need ).......................although this latter did cause a little bit of confusion between Aussie and American troops in Viet Nam I am told. It caused a lot of americans who didn't know the aussie slang, to head for the hills or jump into the nearest foxhole.

We are on most things, however somethings get us going.
Besides, I grew up along the Illinois/Missouri border, Air Force sent me to TX for a years, California for a year, and the DC area for six years before they sent me here where I retired. Depends on the issue, when you talk about hurting one of ours it would be a good idea to be backing toward the door. WBC falls into the range for the Texas defence of "he needed killing".

Cross certain lines and you are in a mine field, up untill then a lot of people seem to think Southerners are easy to push around. Too many people on here crossed that line long ago. As you have no doubt noticed you are not one of those people who have gotten on my last nerve.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: Westboro Hate group to protest Orlando funerals (6/18/2016 8:29:19 PM)

I have said on here previously Bama that I try as much as possible to " Walk my own Patrol"...............an old saying but one worth taking heed of *smile*. But another saying I took deeply to heart many years ago was from that raving head-the-ball, Teddy Roosevelt............."speak softly and carry a big stick !!"...........................There are many on here that I would not invite to a shit-fight, even if they offered to be the target.

I would have had a problem with that, sounds too much like run for your life.
Here it is regional.
In most of the country you don't want to do that means I think you are making a mistake.
In Texas it means.... cause I don't feel like killing someone today.

Here
Now "isn't that special" means you are such an idiot.
And "now bless your heart" means how did an asshole like you live this long.

Charles, I appreciate you starting the thread. I'm not shocked, but it is news.

(Ever feel like you're beating the same drum? Pretty soon, mine's going to get a hole in it.)

I'm not going to say I'm 'glad' this thread has pointed out what I've been saying on other threads. I don't think I've ever had a good thing to say about WBC, Fred Phelps, or the rest of that lot. They got famous in the first dang place for protesting at funerals and during trial of the guys who killed Matthew Sheppard.

While probably the headline grabbers as the most vile and disgusting group, it's not exactly like they are singular. Jerry Falwell, Pat Robinson, (the 700 Club) James Dobson, (Focus on the Family) and a heck of a lot more have regularly preached messages that inspire hatred against the LGBT community. That's not about bashing Christians as a whole. It's pointing out what some people who define themselves as Christians do when it comes to hating people based on their sexual orientation.

Edited for clarity, I hope.

FR

I saw that a few people from WBC showed up at one of the funerals, and 200 people, some from as far away as Philidelphia sealed off the area and kept them from seeing, or being seen from the funeral.

when prominent Christian leaders talk about homosexuality, they very often talk about it in the context of loving the sinner and hating the sin.

this is a direct quote from Dobson for instance, from 37 yrs ago in answer to the question "what should be the Christian's attitude toward homosexuality"---"I believe our obligation is to despise the sin but love the sinner...such individuals need acceptance and love from the Christian community..."

you cannot connect the dots between their preaching and their views on the matter to "inspiring hatred"---unless what you consider as "hatred" is anything that disagrees with or anyone who speaks against homosexuality.

One of the most striking things I read after the Orlando massacre was a tweet from a stranger:

"This is what hating the sin looks like. Just so we're clear about that."

Damn Bama I thought you believed in the Constitution... How would you like it if your local Gun store decided they did not like your looks or political stance and decided they would not sell you a new toy and this was the only store you could reasonably purchase it?

and that stranger is mistaken.

while im here, this might factor into some part of the overall conversation. I just picked up a book by rene de visme Williamson called "faith as foundation: a Christian reorientation of church/state relations in America" and on the book cover a review of the book wrote: "he points out that the Christians and deists who participated in the [constitutional] convention held in common three politically important religious convictions:

"1. god rules the world and guides people and their governments with his providence.

"2. morality is rooted in religion and cannot long survive without it.

"3. political stability and strength depend on morality, and nowhere most so than a constitutional republic."

Yeah, it's striking alright. But just so we're clear, strikingly ignorant.

this is reminiscent of a little blurb in an Andrew breitbart book talking about bill Clinton:

quote:

...I witnessed a shameless president turning the national tragedy of the Oklahoma city bombing into a political opportunity to attack a personal enemy. before the real culprit, timothy McVeigh, was even arraigned, Clinton had blamed talk radio (read: rush Limbaugh) for fomenting the climate that led to this isolated incident. it was disgusting...

Mistaken? Ignorant? I wish I shared your easy confidence, but my experience has been different.

Hatred of the "sin" has a disturbing way of taking itself out on the "sinner." Extreme examples, of course, are countries in which LGBT folk are imprisoned or even executed. Then there are states where it's legal to fire someone simply for his or her sexual orientation. Or to deny a gay person an apartment. And to bar or impede loving, committed same-sex couples from adopting children. The Anglican Communion has all but fractured, because the "orthodox," as they style themselves, cannot abide worshiping with non-closeted LGBT folk. And it's easy to forget, a few decades and chemical cocktails later, the widespread indifference to the outbreak of AIDS, the clear message that gay lives were expendable. Not to mention those who touted the pandemic as evidence of God's wrath. If memory serves, there were a fair number of "godly" folks lionizing Kim Davis for deciding that her hatred of the "sin" trumped the legal right of the "sinners" to marriage certificates.

On a more personal note, I doubt there's an LGBT person of my generation without firsthand experience of antigay bullying, verbal abuse, and/or violence. It was also not unknown for devout parents to banish gay kids from their homes and families. All this seems to be less true for those coming out now, for which I am deeply grateful.

So I hope you'll forgive my difficulty in believing the tired old language of "love the sinner."

Interesting. What might be some of the ways you'd like to reorient life/policy in America?

Really? 'Cause I lived in Co Spgs during the Amendment 2 (at the time) campaign. When it passed, CO wasn't called the 'state of hate' for nothing.

Might I suggest you peruse this: http://www.publiceye.org/magazine/v07n1/conshomo.html
