vincentML -> COPS OVERREACTING OR JUSTIFIED KILLINGS (7/7/2016 7:37:37 AM)

Two separate shootings yesterday of black men by police causes citizens to protest.

Both victims were armed.

Alton Sterling was selling CDs in front of a store. Cops responded to a 911 call that someone was waving a gun. Cops tazered Sterling and then wrestled him to the ground and shot him 4 times or more. Sterling was shot while a cop was sitting on him.

Police body cameras were off? fell off? Store camera and bystanders videos are available.

Justice Department is investigating.

Philander Castile was shot while sitting in his car, pulled over for a broken tail light, told police he had a gun. His girlfriend live-streamed the incident to FB.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/07/07/cops-shot-her-boyfriend-she-livestreamed.html

Apparently, no victim guns were out when they were shot.

What's going on here?

Is this what lynching looks like in the 21st Century?
Were the Officers justified in killing Castile and Sterling?
Are police poorly trained in methods of approaching suspects?
Did the police panic?
What?

I think our racist police simply like killing blacks, they seem to do it pretty well everywhere.

Oh yes, so the victims were armed and neither had drawn their weapon. What does that say about the effectiveness of carrying a firearm for self-defense reasons?

I don't think it was over-reaction by the police, I have a suspicion it is policy. If they're black, shoot first, to kill, and ask questions later, maybe.

I saw that video of the girlfriend who had to sit next to her boyfriend and watch him get shot to death for having a broken tail-light, it was heartbreaking, but all too familiar these days.

I woud love someone to show me anywhere that having a broken tail-light is a captial offense.

This kind of crap talk is what causes people to go off, taking more lives.
Maybe you want this?
The complete story of facts are not out. A lot of people don't react to the full story, they react to what They Think happened before knowing the full story behind actions. Pretty soon you have people going apeshit.
It could be discovered it was an incredible injustice, or not in the end. No matter what the whole thing is disturbing beyond belief.
Sure I'm white. Whatever. My last employer was black. Exceptional woman. I cared for her daughter who had severe cerebral palsy while she worked and it was an honor to help.
I sincerely hope this wasn't a miscarriage of justice and people are not being gunned down for the color of their skin.
I respect the police and am a lover of law and order.
Everyday and every call there is potential danger.
So if they say don't move, you don't. If they say shut up, you shut up. If they say back up, you back up. If you decide to physically assault them it's a threat.
It's for their own safety as well as your own.
In this day and age, to say it bluntly, they are not fucking around. They ain't your mama, hey aint your daddy, they say it once.
That goes for any police officer no matter what color of their skin as long as they are on the right side (good and just) of the law.

Aylee -> RE: COPS OVERREACTING OR JUSTIFIED KILLINGS (7/7/2016 9:20:55 AM)

I had not heard about the second one, but for the first guy I have really wondered if he was SWATTED.

Of course the 72 hour rule applies.

closetoyou -> RE: COPS OVERREACTING OR JUSTIFIED KILLINGS (7/7/2016 9:29:55 AM)

Vincent it seems to me as though your Police are on drugs, not trained and so hyped up, out of control.
glad I am not there.

WhoreMods -> RE: COPS OVERREACTING OR JUSTIFIED KILLINGS (7/7/2016 9:41:31 AM)

They don't need drugs, sport: American Police can murder people on nothing heavier than a couple of packs of Twinkies...

WickedsDesire -> RE: COPS OVERREACTING OR JUSTIFIED KILLINGS (7/7/2016 10:25:22 AM)

I am curious. And I am curious for this.
Can someone tell me the figures for

Stop search seizure faulty break lights included....for the US and perhaps the UK
1. How often it happens
2. How often the copper is gunned down
3. How often the copper guns down those they have stopped.

What I saw in that video was harrowing, and we did not see the beginning - yes this i do know...Why his safety was not on perplexes me, why she was marched down the path and told to get on her knees perplexes me further.

I respect what you say about the danger the police face. I am questioning their approach to suspects. Were these cops properly trained or just clumsy?

In the Sterling case the officers were responding to a call of a man with a gun Why would they even get close enough to taze him or tackle him? Whatever happened to "put your hands up? get on your knees?"

In the Castile incident where he told them he was carrying, whatever happened to "stick your arms out the window; show me your hands."

Cinnamongirl67 -> RE: COPS OVERREACTING OR JUSTIFIED KILLINGS (7/7/2016 11:00:29 AM)

Sometimes when police are called, someone is in direct immediate danger. Someone is hiding, injured, or so traumatized, the police have to enter on high alert.

Anyone who finds themselves in such a situation better cooperate.
We take action. Follow the rules. Case closed.

The Castile incident looks really bad.
Unless there is somthing about it we don't know, and I am not saying there is the cop screwed up.
On the Stirling case there are more questions than answers.
Very good question about him being SWATed.
First did they tell him to get on his knees with his hands up?
Did they taze him and tackle him in an attempt to avoid shooting him?
That is really the only explination.
Did they believe he was deploying the firearm?
I have heard, but have not confirmed that he had a record and thus had the firearm illegally, this is not a reason to shoot him, but if he had a violent past that would affect preceptions.

I don't see any way that Castile can turn out justified.
There are too many unanswered questions about Sterling.

You do realise that anybody who is likely to answer your question is not verified, and so their answer is worthless because they can't prove that they exist?

Honestly, if you were a cop on a gun call would you get close enough to taze him? Whoa! Not me.

The 72 hour rule applies, but I heard somewhere that he was a gang member and a pedophile.

"If he didn't have photos of little girls in his room and film of the same on his phone when you shot him, then they better be there by the time the press arrive, okay?"

How can you continue to invoke the 72 hour rule, then in the same sentence spread rumor?

Can you see the hypocrisy in this statement?

Essentially, I am remarking on what I have seen/read and acknowledging that for 72 hours there are going to be a lot of mixed and wrong information. I am not saying the guy was positively a gang member and pedophile, but that is one of the reports.

Tazing can be done from 6-7 yards away, and the only reason to use them is because they are showing resistance but there is still the chance to avoid lethal force. Trying to take them down without lethal force is one of the risks cops are expected to take to avoid shooting. As you know the first question usually asked is why didn't they just taze him. This incident does confirm my lack of faith in tazers, you have no idea how many people have told me that if you taze someone there is no way it will not stop them cold. Obviously you smarter than most of them.
