My point is clear. The world is full of bad people who do bad things. Having a gun gives you a fighting chance to protect yourself from the bad guys. It's just that simple.

Yep. Especially when the demons in your head tell you that the gays dancing at the local bar are bad, or the cops on the street are bad and need to be eradicated in as high a number as possible. That's when a nice semi-auto assault rifle or two comes in handy, yes sireee.

Or if you don't have a nice semi-auto assault rifle or two, a nice pump shotgun or a hand cannon or 2 will substitute just as well..................with plenty of ammunition and speed loaders of course.

Why do we never hear about people who have successfully defended themselves with their guns?

ive posted some of those, and so have others.

if you go looking online, you will indeed find them.

if your question is indeed genuine as opposed to hidden sarcasm---"why indeed" is a good question.

Yes, they can be found; but they are sooo few in number compared to the downside of tens of thousands on the other side of the fence.

If the American media was as supportive of the 2nd as we are lead to believe, why aren't these events splashed across every media outlet in the country??
I'll tell you why: they are so few and far between that those stats are as rare as rocking horse shit.

I hope it wasn't me leading anyone to believe the American media was supportive of the 2nd.

Now that you mention it, just who is/was it leading you to believe that ? Who is we ?

ETA: Instances of people who have successfully defended themselves with their guns are more numerous than what you're making it out to be. You don't hear so much about it because the anti gun media doesn't want to highlight that fact. It doesn't support their agenda.

Who was that again leading you to believe the American media was supportive of the 2nd ? [8D]

US media pro 2nd? Who told you that, the same guy that told you that you can't drive over 45mph anywhere in the U S.

WHY DOES THE U.S NEED GUNS ?

The fact that it keeps you Brits panties in a twist by itself is a good enough reason for me.

Not to mention they horrify the likes of crooked politicians.

We can have guns just like the US.

Well no, you can't. But let's not quibble. That's not the part of your post that I found interesting.

However, our society, bad as it is, have generally decided we are better off without them.

If you were a civilized country full of civilized people, guns wouldn't be an issue. Guns are only an issue in proportion to the number of uncivilized people. Every country has their share, of course, and the U.S. is no exception, but if things are really that bad in your country then you have my sympathy.

It's so nice that even in his bad society he can come here and tell us how much worse we are. Just a good person there.

I am all for people owning weapons... If people are properly trained and licensed... I'm Canadian.. We have strict gun laws. In order for you to purchase and own a weapon... You need to take a firearms safety class. 1 day for rifles, 2 days for a combined rifle and handgun course. You have to pass the tests, then you send your form from the class along with your paperwork to the Canadian Firearms Program. You have to have 2 personal references on your application, and if anyone doesn't feel you should have one they are free to call the CFP and they will make sure it goes in the file. It took me 6 months to get my license. I am legally allowed to own a handgun. The stipulations are A/ you have to belong to a gun club, and B/ you have to have an Authorization to Transport, meaning legally you are only allowed to transport it to and from the gun range. You are allowed to have semi automatic rifles but the mags have to be blocked so they can only hold 5 rounds, except for the M1 Garand. If you have a weapon and commit a crime or do something stupid with it, all your weapons are confiscated and you lose your license.

Weapons have to be trigger locked and or locked in a gun safe, and we are not allowed to have what is considered a reasonable amount of ammo for each weapon.. Since the mass shooting in Montreal in 1995 the laws became what they are and there have been only 9 mass shootings in Canada since.. According to what i have read a mass shooting is more than 4 people.. There have only been 9 in Canada since then. We Canadians don't have as many weapons as the US, but we have about 2 million.

I live in a city on about 218,000 people. There have been a few times we have gone a couple of years without a murder. The US has 10x more the population of us, I am sure you guys could come up with reasonable gun control laws... Why is it so hard?

The US has never had a nationwide set of severe gun restrictions that the rest of the civilized world now enjoy.
The stats prove that they work.

The stats only prove that they work in the rest of the civilized world. I'm not even sure if they prove that. I mean how many firearm mass murders accured in your countries (UK and Australia) in the past before those horrific ones that lead to the severely restrictive gun laws, the confiscations, buy backs and all the rest of it. I don't believe it was a whole lot to begin with. IMO you are not immune. It will likely happen again.
Just because you keep bantering and ballyhooing the righteousness and wisdom of your gun laws on every freaking gun thread doesn't mean they could possibly work well for us here in the US.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: WHY DOES THE U.S NEED GUNS ? (7/19/2016 11:00:01 PM)

I reckon it would be a really good idea if we all just let other countries and their citizens get on with the way they want and obviously prefer to live. The playing field will eventually level itself out, with or without us all snarking at each other about how much better OUR system is, or that YOUR system would never work over here. Live and let live or live and let die. How you sort your problems out or what you do in your country is really none of my business, just as the reverse is true too.

You don't exclude bits from facts that you don't like.

And you think it's the lowest gun homicide rate in the world??
Go look at the stats again - you're dead wrong; it's one of the highest in the civilized world.

Now yer just talkin out yer ass. Nnanji is correct though he left out LA and quite a few other cities large and small. If we eliminated gang banger murders, the gun homicide rate would be low. Maybe you just glossed over the GANG BANGER part of his post.

I'm buying you a beer and I'll listen to the other blokes in your tavern lies the next time I'm in your town.

Paying attention to that would have meant he would have had to deal with the point instead of acting superior. Either that or he can't read.

Because God did not make men to be "allowed" something by their government. God made government to serve men. No offense, but your ideas are repellant to me. I shudder, literally, when I read what you've expressed.

In the U.S. (at least in the states where I've lived) a safety course and live-fire test are only required for a CCW. I suppose that those could be required for ownership, but most of the other restrictions you mention impair the readiness and adequacy of the arm for self-defense and simply would not fly in the U.S.

But more directly to the point, the real problems here are racial and socioeconomic. Our high homicide rate reflects the mind-numbing mayhem that plagues our inner cities. Most of the U.S. is just as peaceful as any other first world nation.

I understand that for the most part it does, even in the roughest cities in the US, I live 15 minutes from Detroit, there are amazing people.. I guess the media shows such a bias.... I served in the US military, I served in the Canadian military, and I never had my gun license until 2 years ago

Baldrick -> RE: WHY DOES THE U.S NEED GUNS ? (7/19/2016 11:40:53 PM)

Of course it is to you.... To me is quite reasonable.... I am not afraid to walk down my street at night alone either... Unarmed

Baldrick -> RE: WHY DOES THE U.S NEED GUNS ? (7/19/2016 11:43:12 PM)

And what does God your version of God have to do with anything!

Dvr22999874 -> RE: WHY DOES THE U.S NEED GUNS ? (7/19/2016 11:47:34 PM)

I suppose that if god had wanted you to live forever, he wouldn't have invented guns *smile*.............But I am afraid that I think that any god that spends his time concerning himself with the pissant doings of man, has too much time on his hands and should take up knitting
