Charles6682 -> Is there an Unforgivable Sin? (10/4/2016 1:10:41 AM)

I didn't think there was such a thing until I read a few verses in the Bible. It is said that God/Jesus will forgive any sin. Yet, in 3 different verses in the Bible, there is a sin that say can not be forgiven. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_sin Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is claimed to be an unforgivable sin. That did catch my attention because I did say some foolish things about the Spirit before, even though I didn't mean it. They even have on the internet called the Blasphemy challenge, mostly Atheists who want to prove to others that they are true Atheists. I read what the Biblical scholars had to say about this so called sin and realized that I didn't actually commit it. But it did get me to do some thinking. What is it. Does God really forgive all sins? Or is that just a "pie in the sky" fantasy?

umm.. you are making the assumption that God exists and is real.. personally, I dont care if God exists or not, as a child I rejected God and all that religious shite.. I was taught by the Priest that to get into heaven you have to believe in God, being a good person, doing things that Sister Teresa did, etc doesnt cut it, you could be a (serial/mass) murderer but then "find God" and go to heaven.. to me its BS and wrong.. it tells me God is egotistical and more interested in people kissing his(her?) feet than rewarding good people for doing good deeds.. To not believe in God is to take away God's weak hold on you/people.. which is in line with your findings of to badmouth God/holy spirit/etc is to take control over you away from God so, yeah, that's the worst sin in a egotistical God's eyes..

I'm with tj on this. Some prophet 2,000 years ago doesn't forgive sins. Those upon whom those sins were committed have that right.

As such, that would make murder an unforgivable sin. Maiming someone for life as well. Hurting someone, if they heal up could be forgiven, if the victim decides to. Stealing, sure, especially under certain circumstances but not if they break into your house when you are there. Then they're dead and there is no way to forgive them.

T^T

MrRodgers -> RE: Is there an Unforgivable Sin? (10/5/2016 4:30:27 AM)

There are no unforgivable sins, because there are no 'sins' certainly at least in the ecclesiastical sense. Can man, a sinner, tell us what sins are ? No.

Is there any such thing as a sin in any other sense and if so...would it matter ?

That Christ was just a wise teacher or a prophet is the one thing you cannot say about him. He claimed to forgive sins, as if he was the injured party in all our cruelties to one another, and claimed exactly that in the parable of the King:

Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. ~Matthew 25:40

So as it seems to me, what we are faced with here is either a raving lunatic, comparable (in the words of C.S. Lewis) to man who claims to be a poached egg, or else he is someone whose teachings we might benefit from understanding.

That's an odd question to ask in a community dominated by atheists and fucking godless heathens.

Of course there's a sin that cannot be forgiven, you fucking cretin. Rejecting forgiveness.

Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ~Acts 2:37-38

To unrepentantly reject the Holy Spirit is to reject your own forgiveness, and refusing forgiveness accomplishes the same end.

For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. ~Matthew 6:14-15

Whether you believe that is a separate matter, of course, but even an atheist clam could figure it out.

I must have missed Sunday School the morning that line was taught.

"For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. ~Matthew 6:14-15"

That last sentence ...

Not exactly the best example of unconditional forgiveness as expected from the first sentence, is it?

PeonForHer -> RE: Is there an Unforgivable Sin? (10/5/2016 1:52:14 PM)

It could give people of a certain logical preference a bit of a headache, certainly.

ThatDizzyChick -> RE: Is there an Unforgivable Sin? (10/5/2016 1:57:19 PM)

That all depends on how you conceive of God. The God I believe in is not really concerned with the day to day activities of people.

Yes.

Almost like reading a succession of Milton Friedman quotes.

Which promulgation therefrom became the successor religion in the US, as did those of Hayek in the UK.

PeonForHer -> RE: Is there an Unforgivable Sin? (10/5/2016 2:27:38 PM)

Oh we took sizeable lumps from Friedman here, too.

MercTech -> RE: Is there an Unforgivable Sin? (10/5/2016 2:31:25 PM)

Dateline: Dark ages. King converts to Christianity on his death bed.
When Christianity was a young cult; many were slow to convert until their old age because the supreme unction that forgives all sins can only be performed once. At least that was one of the historic beliefs in the Pauline version of Christianity that became the Roman Catholic Church. In the protestant church I grew up in, Presbyterian, the only unforgiveable sin was, if I remember my catechism right, was continued willful denial of God.

Adding to that, we can also see from Matthew (was that the original spelling? just going by the poster's original quote, here) that being unforgiving is being more God-like.

So, when we are unforgiving and seek vengeance, we are trying to go by His example and be more God-like, as it turns out.

Who doesn't want to be like daddy?

MrRodgers -> RE: Is there an Unforgivable Sin? (10/5/2016 2:45:14 PM)

Well it sure does become a whole lot easier, when you can create your own gods and selectively choose their advice.

The best part I think is that sinning we are so informed is in what you do and one can 'sin' all of their lives, yet on your death bed should you be lucky enough to have one and know it...you can SAY you repent all of your sins and go to heaven and live in everlasting paradise.

Isn't that precious ?

Kinkroids, when you die, you go to sleep, you do not dream and...you never wake up.

Despite your penchant for issuing pronouncements that make you sound like a cranky priest, there is no possible way you could know any such a thing.
